Hey WhyMe, How’s life in Zion?

Who would be the patron saint of Provo in the Catholic pantheon? Would St. George who killed the dragon be the patron saint of St. George? Or would it be Mary, since it’s on the Rio Virgin?

How about Orderville? Would it be St. Brigham Young, or St. Karl Marx?

What ever happened to all the Mormon Dorothy Day types? They seem to have disappeared in two generations. Now all we have are Romneys and Mariotts. Maybe Brother Dorsey can tell us.
I don’t know where all the Mormon Dorothy Day types are now. Did the lds ever have Dorothy Day types. Maybe not. Day worked within the catholic faith and used the catechism to her advantage and for the advantage of the poor. The catholic tradition for many religious is the vow of poverty. When a person is prepared to practice detachment and a life of poverty, much time can unleashed for the poor and the down trodden and one develops empathy.

However, Mormons once a month give a fast offering for the poor. In some sense, this is their way to help the less fortunate in this world. To think about it, it is not a bad way to help others by offering a fast the first sunday of every month. It is a small price to pay for being a christian.

I agree. LaMar reminds me of where I was about 15 years ago. People who really think and read and research are all too rare. I like the guy a lot. 👍

Paul
Of course, this just might be a little insulting to LaMar. In other words, LaMar is not quite there yet, but he is on his way if he chooses a the more correct path.

Hi why me; many of us have been where LaMar is and have done that. He tosses out soundbites from history, philosophy and mythology with the apparent idea that no one who chooses Christianity could possibly know about those things. 🤷 Guess what, that kind of bigotry is as common as mud among atheists, especially. Many of us are educated about the stuff LaMar tosses out as bait, and know it in far more depth than he does. The only thing to learn from him is how not to act when a guest in someone else’s home.
This is another post that tells LaMar: Hey, LaMar, I was you years ago. Yea, I have been there and done that too. But now I am more enlightened.

In the non-catholic section of the forum, aren’t the catholics guests? 😉

Finally, I asked them why they put Joseph Smith so far above Jesus when Joseph was a mere man with a vivid imagination and Jesus Christ is truly the SON of GOD and the 3rd Person of the Blessed Trinity. They became very agitated said I insulted their leader and left and never came back!!! So much for wanting to share beliefs.
I don’t buy the last part. I seriously doubt that the lds missionaries would act this way. Most mormons look upon JS as a prophet and a man but certainly not on par with Jesus. I don’t think that they would become that agitated unless provoked. Missionaries are used to being insulted.

True dat.

Mary seems much more potent and powerful than, say, Demeter, one of the oldest and most fundamental deities in the Indo-European pantheon, who had to run around begging humans to help her save her (also divine) daughter.

When I was a kid I used to read about Classical Greece and Rome. Herodotus, Thucydides’ Peloponnesian War, Plato…

I used to wonder how the society worked, and how the average joe could keep track of who was doing what, or who to pray to for this or that. It’s a shame I didn’t just take some Catholic classes, because it’s a perfect allegory. You had an alpha-male God on top, then you had his kids, family, and friends, responsible for specific areas and situations. You pray to St. Christopher for safe journeys, and to St. Francis if your cat has to go to the vet. Granted, it’s not my thing, but I think it’s pretty cool.
Gotta remember though, Demeter and Persephone were pagan constructs. Hopefully the coming of Christ changed all that. NOW we get to argue Christian philosophy and beliefs. What fun. Peace.

Dear Stephen. We have invited those who are not Catholic to DISCUSS/COMMUNICATE with us so that we may learn more about each other. Objective discussion, to me, is more acceptable to this forum than an “I believe and you’re wrong” structure. How can we learn if we take offense and block whatever we don’t agrre with. I have seen too many threads on these forums deteriorate into name calling because of this attitude. My :twocents: 🙂 Peace.
Yes Stephen, I do mean this, if this the post you are asking about. Check out some of the other forums. 🙂 Peace

Yep. This exactly. He hasn’t learned that there’s something beyond the end of his own nose yet. With Christ’s mercy he will. Until then? 🤷

evil?

Is that your righteous judgment?

Very sad whyme. It is obvious this person only came around to get his persecution complex fed. And he throws around insults in order to make it happen. Not to mention the link to a mormon proselytizing website. He is here for anything but to learn about religion…particularly the religion he has already rejected.

And, I googled his user name. He’s doing the same game at another forum. Only that one, he’s discrediting Catholicism in order to prove that mormons are Christian.

He was waiting for the topic of “are mormons Christian” to come up, that’s all there is to it. He has responded to nothing else but that, which says to me that is what he wanted to “discuss” to begin with.

Troll behavior.
Sounds to me like hes very unhappy with what he has and very jealous of what he doesn’t have and to blind to let anyone help him find the TRUTH. I think thats why some of these people like to ridicule Catholics. I am a life long Catholic, I have never ridiculed anyone else’ beliefs, although I don’t agree with many of them, but I do talk to them and try to help them understand that most of what they think about the Catholic Church is not true. (such as worshiping Mary, statues, not reading the Bible etc.) I don’t have to ridicule or insult anyone. I know what I have in the Catholic Faith, (the fullness of the TRUTH) and I know what they don’t have in theirs (Apostolic Succession, The TRUE presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, all seven Sacraments, 2,000 years of Doctrine taught by Jesus Christ, proper understanding of Scriptures, and not just someones interpretation, etc.,etc…) So instead of causing anger, lets just state the truth and pray for all of us. Jesus prayed that we would all be ONE in HIM, and that is what we should pray for too. All this division is the work of the “Father of Lies!”

A great improvement. Only one directly Mormon-related thread. If only they would realize that if they would leave us alone, Mormon secrets would not be revealed. 😛 I like the readings from yesterday’s Mass. With time, religions which are of man will destroy themselves. However, I continue to pray. :gopray2:

When I started on this crusade, I thought I was one person against an overpowering force. What a lack of faith. :o

Jimmy B may have a lot to do with what is on page one. And moderation. And lack of interest. 😃

Nope, we’re not alone.

Ive read the whole Book of Mormon and while it was interesting to read it fell short when I started to research whether American Indians had Semetic blood as well as no trace of Nephites in the Lower Americas. In fact there is not one shred of archeological evidence. No tombs of Nephites or engravings. There was nothing to confirm the book.

Later I had read Joseph Smith was a very good storyteller. I admit some of his writings are interesting like the Great Pearl of Price and D&C but there was no outer validation of his claims. All in all it is just a springing up of old heresies like gnosticism under a new label. Maybe one day when someone finds some archeological evidence of Nephites existing or Lamanites I will search further but until then they are just another group of heretics. We Catholic Christians at least have evidence of our faith, such as the Popes and St. Peters bones and tombs in the bottom of St. Peters square, thousands of written documents from the Early Christian Fathers that prove our faith to heretics and dissenters, uncorrupted bodys of saints, stigmata, as well as thousands of documented and notarized miracles such as Fatima and miracle workings of the Saints such as healing the sick and raising the dead.

I got some answers for you if you want to look at my sig line. 😃

Make it easier, post 53 on “I want to be a Mormon” thread, but the whole thread is good.

You were there??? Then why didn’t they ever come back?? Never heard from them again!! I didn’t insult them, just made an observation about their leader. The word Joseph Smith came out of their mouth and readings far more often then the name Jesus Christ. Actually I should have been provoked, and was, long before that but I kept it under control. Especially when it came to the things they said about our belief in the Holy Eucharist. I wanted to try to reason with them about who Jesus really was.
Early on in our meetings, one of them said to me, “One of us has to be right and the other one has to be wrong,” and I said “You are right about that, and guess who is wrong?”
The TRUTH is the TRUTH even if NO one believes it and a LIE is still a LIE even if everyone believes it. Said by Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

And I may add to that our Faith in the HOLY Eucharist which has had many Eucharistic Miracles surrounding it. Read the 6th Chapter of John and also read about the Last Supper, Acts of the Apostles and Early Church Fathers. The TRUTH is there if anyone wants to find it. Right in the Sacred Scriptures that so many profess to believe in. Jesus said, "I AM the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE. He said it, I believe it, that settles it.

Lets look at it this way: Many of the kind-hearted mormons have left because you and others showed unchristian-like behavior toward them. If catholics disrespect their faith on this forum and mormons come on the forum to discuss this disrespect and you and others show more disrespect, there is no reason for them to stay.

This is not something to be proud of. But it is something for you and the others to think and reflect on. Fortunately, there are only a few catholics who behave this way. But unfortunately, they have the loudest keyboards.

MAKE lOVE NOT WAR can be interpreted in many ways. :newidea:

What would you have done if they did have Semetic blood? Join? The nephites were wiped out. If you read the book you would have known this small fact.

The mormons can say the same. You see just how much you have in common with them. 🙂

Talking about story tellers, I knew a woman who had 5 children and she came here form Calif. We knew nothing about her life except what she told us, and boy could she tell the yarns. According to her she was full blooded Apatche Indian, (even related to Geronimo) born and raised in Ariz. had 26 siblings, one younger brother was shot and killed because he was Indian, and boy you wouldn’t believe the stories she told that sounded SOOOO convincing, details and all. Since we knew nothing about her , we had no reason to doubt her . About 3 years later and many, many stories about her life, her Father came to visit from Calif. and he told us there was NO truth to any of it, she is about 1/6 Indian from New York state, where she was really born. Her Father is French Canadian from Canada, and her brother died in a motorcycle accident. She and her brother were the only kids in the family. Her Father said she has always been like that, telling wild stories to everyone. I think she actually believed what she said herself.

Oh but the Mormans are using their own made up version of the Bible and its certainly nothing like the true original Bible. I am afraid we have far less in common that you are willing to admit.

Ahhh but a mormon could say the same if they wanted to be rude to you. But most likely they would not do so.

The mormons have the king james version of the bible. Many faiths use this bible. What is the true original bible? The Saint Joseph edition? NIV edition?
