The title says it all. I was reading a friend’s Facebook page to catch up on his life and see if he and his wife could come down next weekend, and I came across this comment that his friend made:
My friends are divided fairly evenly between evangelicals, atheists, and devout pagans with a smattering of Catholics, Mormons, and standard people who don’t really know or care.
People who openly hate Christ don’t bother me. We were all th…at way once, and at least they’re honest about it. It’s the Catholics/Mormons/cults/cultural Christians that really upset me. Rejecting the truth is not (imho) nearly as bad as perverting it.
I don’t know why this one in particular is bugging me so bad - I deal with a lot of anti-Catholicism and anti-christian bigotry at my University, but this comment really just set me off.

I think maybe I’m just stressed with finals, but I am also feeling a sense of despair. My friend knew that I am catholic, and he didn’t defend me or Catholics at all. I guess I am just feeling really isolated. I don’t belong in my University because I am a christian, and if I seek out Christians I am isolated because I am Catholic. There is a small group of catholics on campus, but they are…well, politically isolating me. Their focus is social justice (which is great) but they are always talking about how great pro-abortion candidates are because of other issues. I just don’t belong with them because I frankly don’t care how good someone’s economic or immigration policies are - if they support mass murder, I cannot support them. (And by the way, this goes for both sides of the aisle!)

I just feel like a square peg in a round hole, and this comment is causing me anguish as it is a reminder of how outcast I feel. I guess I am just looking for a little solidarity here. I just don’t understand why we can’t all just Love Jesus and love one another and help each other get to heaven instead of spewing hatred and bigotry.

Don’t put too much into this. First of all your friend did not say this, someone else did. And you don’t know that your friend did not PM him or otherwise say something, or maybe just didn’t know how to address the problem. Heck, maybe he has not been on FB in awhile to even see the comment or has been too busy to do anything about it.

Just let it go.

As for feeling isolated - start your own Catholic group! I would just bet that you are not as alone as you think you are. Imagine how awesome it could be for other conservative Catholics to find a group where they could actually live and talk about their Faith with like minded individuals and not have to worry about upsetting the politically correct crowd!! If there is a problem, fix it! Don’t just complain that no one else is making room for you, make your own room for you and those who are like you! 🙂 That’s one of the awesome things about college campus life as opposed to high school, you don’t have to go with the flow.

Thank you for reminding me of this. I know that the friend DID see the comment, he just never said anything publically about it. Thank you for this reminder to not judge him. I appreciate this a lot.
Thank you for this suggestion! I would totally do this if I had more time. Maybe next quarter or something. The trouble would be advertising my group - posters and flyers for conservative groups tend to get vandalized pretty good around here. I am wondering if I should just spend more time with my conservative Christian and Catholic friends/church members outside of school…it could provide the break I need.

Thank you again for your comment. I just feel like I need a little support and a few kind words and your post provided that. I am suspecting that my nerves are just raw and these calls to not judge and love people is very helpful.

I understand. Because isolation, political or other, works both ways. It’s a 2 way street. Your last point is a laudible goal. But people in good faith can have different beliefs as to what it takes to get to heaven. And then when one camp digs its heels into the sand, it’s sad, yes, but well you know what can happen. 😦 I wish you peace.

I don’t really have advice as Liza pretty well said it. I just wanted to say that us fellow square pegs have you in our prayers. 🙂

SQUARE PEGS RULE!!! 👍

Jesus was totally a square peg.

HAHAHA!! (I literally laughed out loud in a computer lab full of people. Thanks for getting me weird looks, Lizaanne:p. Although us square pegs should be used to it, eh? hahaha!)

If you feel marginalized, remember that our LORD went through the same, only far worse.

He was rejected by HIS community, by the religion of the GOD HE came to serve; and was ultimately sent out of human life itself!

So, in a milder sense, you have that in common with HIM.

I feel your pain. I also understand how university-level Catholic fixation on “justice” issues can alienate those who don’t see life quite the same way. (When I was a university student, the Catholic center at my school at one point looked like a Bill Clinton campaign office. Because I didn’t share their enthusiasm for him, I ended up going to mass elsewhere until the election ended.)

Hang in there. Friends will fail you, even family can. Only our LORD remains faithful.

God Bless and ICXC NIKA.

WG, I am proud to call you my sister in Christ. Your reactions not only display the authenticity of your love toward your friends, but also your love for the Lord and His Word. I pray that someday those friends who have slighted you are able to appreciate that about you.

Do you like music? I draw alot of comfort and inspiration from the song LET IT BE, by the Beatles. I know Paul did not intend for this song to be about Mary…But it is. I am Going to pray for Her intercession to Her Son, to give you an extra messure of peace of mind, during this very difficult and stressful period. And remember It does not matter if we know eachother or not on a personal level. We of the Catholic Faith Love you. Jesus loves you. And Mary loves you. Who can be against us, if Christ is for us? Peace and prayers for you. :grouphug:

Havard!! I haven’t run into you in a while! I hope you are well.

Thank you for your kind words. I am so glad that we are family in the Lord! 🙂 Just please pray for me that I can continue to love others. I admit it’s getting harder and harder not to turn bitter with the opposition I am coming up against. I feel sort of surrounded. heh.

GEddie, thank you for the reminder. I guess I should focus on this sense of persecution for the season of lent, eh?

THank you! I LOVE music (I got my BA in music, which probably explains why I am BACK IN SCHOOL NOW…haha) I actually set up a contemporary christian station on pandora. Sometimes I encounter songs that are theologically wrong, but I just ban them from my station. I get a lot of uplifting hymns. One of my favorites right now is this one:

youtube.com/watch?v=km2jPqoTtew

I’d also like to add that I am incredibly grateful that Jesus gave us his mother. While my mother is alive, she has never been a mother to me and I have had to care for her for as long as I can remember. I love my mother, but when I need a “mother figure” I am so glad I can cry out to Mary.

I struggle with a hot temper so that comment ticks me off too. I am giving up FB for lent…and maybe for good because I’ve come to the conclusion that it is only an “occasion of sin” for me. I find myself getting so annoyed, disgusted, judgemental when I go there. So glad lent starts tomorrow!🙂

I’m giving up posting on Facebook. I know if I don’t nip my bad attitude towards catholic bashers in the bud by keeping my mouth shut, I’m gunna get really bitter. I’ll still read it because it’s the best way to hear about my friends and I’ll send private messages to friends, but no posting comments, videos, news articles or status updates!

I guess it’s time for square pegs to bunker down and let the isolation of the round pegs begin. I honestly don’t think you guys really see it. Oh well God bless everyone here with His Heavenly peace.

Well it is obvious the person who made the comment is an ignorant fool and has the slighest clue about the “truth” even if it was stapled on his/her forehead.
