I'm sick of the rabid Islamophobia on these boards...

Hi

I think there are some people who are bent upon not listening to the peaceful view of Islam. If they spent a lot of time studying under a misconception about unpeaceful Islam, if they are sincere people and want to eradicate violence, then they would have agreed to study the peaceful approach as well, and spent some time on it. I don’t think it is a positive approach, it is rather adding fuel to the aleady inflammable situation.

I think, it would be a reasonable thing to make study as suggested by me so that a peaceful earth becomes a reality.

Thanks
Yes , a study of the subject would be most helpful. So would Muslims addressing the violent quotes in the Koran. I have been syaing that these verses can be interpreted differnetly in the context of the times they were written and are not normative for Muslims for all times. Shouldn’t YOU be making these arguments!? Is my thesis right or am I wasting my time? Should we just ignore these problematic texts? We can’t do that. We Christians don’t ignore the evil things done in Christ’s name in the past but have dealt with them.
I commend you and other Muslims for promoting peace. But you have to deal with the questionable verses in the Koran, unless there is another Koran we don’t know about.
Also, in the future, it may be wise to refrain from making statements such as “had Jesus lived” on a Christian discussion board as you did a while ago. I trust you are aware that as Christians, we believe that Jesus rose from the dead and lives now.

Roman,
You make it sound as if the Arab conquest was peaceful and non-violent and the Christians were not oppressed. Sure once the conquest occurred the Christians were not killed but only oppressed as dhimmis and forced to pay the jizyah and suffer great humiliation and persecution.

But you make it seem the Arabs were righteous in persecuting Christians instead of killing them.
WILL YOU KNOCK IT OFF. The point is that the initial spread of Islamic civilization was not all that religiously motivated. I never said it was peaceful or nonviolent although some of it was. Many heretical Christian communities welcomed the Arab conquerors with open arms as long as they would be allowed to practice their version of Christianity. Thus many communities submitted without a drop of blood being spilled.
And no, they weren’t righteous for doing that. That is one of the things I hate about Islamic history.I am actually sick and tired of many Muslims sqawking about the crusades and Western imperialism while longing for a return of their own. The point is that they weren’t motivated by the Koran. Had they remained pagan they would have done the same thing. We can’t blame the religion per see for what they did.

"Where did this term “Neo Con” come from anyway? Have Conservatives really changed all that much? Do they want anything new? "

For your information, “Neo Con” is a term for Neo Conservative, but these people are anything but conservative. Neo Cons advocate big government, just like Liberals. Rather than welfare and social programs, Neo Cons advocate military adventurism around the world, and a police state at home, supposedly to protect us from terrorism.

The fact is, the Neo Cons have brought terrorism to our shores buy their interventionist meddling in the foreign wars. The Neo Cons are already to attack new enemies, which they create by a beligerant foreign policy.

Conservatives are referred to as “Isolationists” by Neo Cons. We are not isolationists. We believe in foreign trade, in visiting other countries and in other people visiting the US. What we DON"T want is for our government to get entangled with foreign governments.

A perfect example of Neo Cons in action is the recent secret meeting in Canada between our Neo Cons politicians, and representatives of Mexico and Canada. Conservatives demand open government. Our politicians are public servants, not our masters. Who are they to work behind our backs?

Neo Cons are Liberals posing as Conservatives. Liberals are trying to take our guns, kill unborn babies, and undermine Christianity. Neo Cons are undermining the Fourth and Fifth Amendments of the Bill of Rights (to fight “terrorism”), promoting perpetual foreign, undeclared wars, and branding Muslims as our new enemy.

After seven decades, International Communism collapsed, despite constant infusions of US taxpayer dollars. Our politicians went from using Communism as the enemy, to Global Warming and terrorism.

Global Warming is a hoax. It is being perpetuated by scientists on the government payroll, and their stooges in mainstream media. Terrorism is being used simultaneously to get us to relinquish our freedoms for security. Aggressive foreign policy in the Middle East has provoked radical Islamic elements to commit terrorist acts against us. This is being used to demonize all Muslims. Many Americans are falling for the latest lie.

Why weren’t Muslims a threat to us twenty five, or even fifty years ago? Nobody seems to be asking the right questions. They just swallow the lies.

It’s all about power. Politicians in the Middle East, sometimes masquerading as “religious leaders”, and politicians here at home. It’s politicians who create wars, not religions.

Muslims are not the problem. Christians are not the problem. It’s the politicians.

We can’t blame the religion per see for what they did.
Yes, we can…and should. Unlike Christians who act in opposition to the Gospels with murder and oppression, Islam mandates it for Moslems, meaning it is motivated by the Quran.

Why do you think the spread of Islam was not religiously motivated?

  1. Islamic CIVILIZATION was violent from its inception, Islamic religion? That’s another question.
  2. THEY don’t do the things you say they do, only a minority. We can’t say all Muslims blow people up or lie to advance their faith, as you seem to imply.
  3. The reason I bring Voltaire into this is that he and others of the French Enlightenment called Christianity intrinsically violent. He was of course wrong but the damage was done. There is no causal link between Jesus and violence. Never said there was. My point is that there may not be as strong a link between Mohammed and violence that many think there is. We can’t say that Islamic RELIGION is intrinsically violent untill we know the context of the violent verses and how they should be interpreted.
Islam is a political religion, so bringing up civilization argues, if anything, for the one and the other being one and the same: look at a map of the M E for starters.

It is a large number and a large proportion who kill innocents and themselves, or even just the former, and it shows no sign of getting smaller left to its own.

Voltaire, Jesuit trained, was about as much an expert on Christianity as Pol Pot, Sorbonne trained, was on democracy.

God bless.

And I you 😉

God bless.

**Liberation theology: a challenge to the church
**
As an influential cardinal, Pope Benedict XVI stifled liberation theology, which called on the church to help the poor and oppressed by challenging political power, particularly in Latin America. While liberation theology has faded as a movement, it is still practiced in some areas and studied widely. Some say it has influenced feminist, Latino, black and Asian theologies throughout the world.
Despite the rising number of Latin immigrants in the United States, scholars say liberation theology exists more in academia than in congregations. As Pope Benedict settles into leading a church in which nearly half its billion members live in Latin America, the evolution of liberation theology raises an enduring question: What is the role of churches in addressing injustice, inequity and oppression that result from political power?

• Pope Benedict XVI (as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger) became one of liberation theology’s staunchest critics in the 1980s as head of the Catholic Church’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He silenced theologians associated with such scriptural interpretations and appointed traditional bishops. Some scholars believe it’s because he objected to Marxist-inspired political analysis that some theologians embraced. Others say Ratzinger objected to the independence of base communities, small groups formed to study the Bible and relate it to their own experience of oppression.

I would post the rest of it but don’ want to get in trouble.** Read it in the entirety.

Why weren’t Muslims a threat to us twenty five, or even fifty years ago?
|One possible reason is that Islam was smaller then, but in about 50 years it has increased by 235 percent, contrasted with Christianity which has increased by about 47 percent over the same period according to the Readers Digest Almanac of 1983.

Why weren’t Muslims a threat to us twenty five, or even fifty years ago?
Fifty years ago the Arab world didn’t have the petro-dollars to finance Jihad.

Moslems now migrate/travel around the world thanks to modern transport.

Several factors are thus invovled.

Thank you, I know what Neo Con is supposed to mean, I was asking how the concept started. But judging from your definition, I would guess it’s the result of a feverishly paranoid imagination. Neo Cons, by your definition, don’t exist.

Speaking of paranoid delusions, what was that about communism being supported by U.S. taxpayers…? Also, you have once again made connections where there are none. Those who were concerned about the spread of communism and those who are now obsessed with global warming are entirely separate entities with entirely different and mutually exclusive goals, with nothing more in common than their basic genetic makeup.

Now let me get this straight, just so I know I’m understanding you correctly. You believe that terrorism is not only just as much a fabrication as global warming, but that the people perpetuating both are two sides of the same coin. Do you think the animosity between Liberals and “Neo Cons” is just an act? They each denounce the concerns and beliefs of the other, yet they’re working together to steal our rights… Is that what you believe?

Fine, let’s focus on that, since the rest is out of the scope of this thread. Are you of like mind with those that think the 9/11 attacks were an inside job? That the twin towers were felled by a controlled demolition? Seems to me you’d have to believe something like that to think that it’s all a manufactured threat. But even if it were true (which it’s not) how would you explain the attacks in Spain, India, and so many other countries, including the failed attacks in the U.K. and here at home? Do you think there are evil Americans all over the world orchestrating fake Muslim terrorist attacks? Do you think the violent and deadly riots in France are actually being perpetrated by tens of thousands of U.S. agents in disguise? And yet, even though they’re not actually responsible, Muslims are claiming credit for the attacks, and rejoicing en masse all over the world, is that it? Do you see the long list of absurdities that would all have to be true for your theories to hold water?

You, like so many others, seem to be more afraid of being called Islamophobic than you are of actual terrorism. And sure, the chances of you getting blown up are probably much slimmer than your chances of having meaningless insults hurled at you by nutty leftists (at least for the time being) but while people like you refuse to acknowledge the truth about Islam for fear of being called names, the sticks and stones are raining down on other innocent people every day.

So tell me, is it worth it?

Twenty-five years ago 241 US Marines were killed in Lebanon in the name of Islam. Link.

I think if you look, you would see how killers in the name of allah have been killing without respite since 630AD. 1972 Munich Olympics.
WW2 invlovment with Hitler.
The Armenian genocide in the early 1900’s.

Who would have ever guessed it: Muslims killing Muslims? What a religion.

NYALA, Sudan, Aug. 28 — Some of the same Arab tribes accused of massacring civilians in the Darfur region of Sudan are now unleashing their considerable firepower against one another in a battle over the spoils of war that is killing hundreds of people and displacing tens of thousands.

You cannot separate their religion and their politics…which is the sum total of their “civilization”…

And the balance sit on their hands and do nothing to prevent it. Even though the Kuwaitis were overrun by Sadaam Hussein and their country was torn apart, citizens murdered, women raped, etc…etc…and we went in as the “predominant” force and liberated their country…the vast majority of Kuwaiti’s including members of their ruling family consider Bin Laden a hero, and that the US deserved to be attacked…

Their entire goal is a “theocratic government” spanning the globe with them and their mullahs in charge… Don’t kid yourself, just because one of them is not in the street waving an AK today, doesn’t mean he won’t carry a bomb or AK tomorrow.

Islam is a creepy religion

No, it’s acceptance of history. It’s to acknowledge that the ‘west’ didn’t exist when Islamic terror began. I’ve already noted this.

Muhammad offered terrorism as a legitimate weapon and England, France, Italy, Spain etc weren’t even nations yet.
Latin Christendom certainly existed when Muhammad began Islam, and however post-Christian and even anti-Christian “the West” has become it is generally recognized that it is the continuation of the civilization we identify as “Latin Christendom.”
I don’t deny Napoleon attacked Egypt. This secularist’s actions aren’t therefore a contributor to Christian -v- Islamic animosity. France at that time had thrown out the Catholic church, officially (though of course there continued to be great public affinity with that church).
Both Muslims **and **Christians have seen no distinction between the “Western civilization” that Napoleon represented and “Christianity” or “Christendom” (I personally very much make that distinction).

Are you seriously claiming that aggression upon Muslim lands by Western powers (whether you wish to define them as Christian or not) has not contributed to Muslim animosity against Christians? That Muslims are hostile to Christians only because the Qur’an tells them to be?
So your example is an officially atheist state attacks an Islamic state 1,100 years after Muhammad and this is the cause of, or the start of animosity between ‘the west’ and Islam?
I have indeed. That’s 600 years after Islam’s beginning. Somehow Islam was ‘reacting’ to atrocities that took place 600 years later?
Do I see a pattern here? According to you, modern Christians may claim victimhood on the basis of the first caliphs’ wars of conquest 1400 years ago, while modern Muslims may not claim victimhood on the basis of the Crusades 800 years ago, is that right?

Not that Muslims cannot claim victimhood at the hands of Christians/Westerners on the basis of the history of the past 200 or 20 or 2 years?

And, of course, Muslims have also been victimizing Christians all along - I am not denying that. Christians have also been victimizing Muslims all along as well - I would not want to deny that either.

And, of course, throughout history there have been many cases of Muslims and Christians living in peace together, if not totally as equals (and Christians have not been above imposing their own version of dhimmitude on non-Christians, whether Jews, Muslims, and others as well as on Christians of other sects).
Cite me some examples. Moslems wiped out the Banu Quaresh tribe after they’d surrendered. This was admittedly a Jewish tribe, but it was done under Muhammad’s supervision
I have never defended Muhammad’s actions. All I have wished to do is remind people that Muhammad’s conduct is not at all that different from the conduct that we read attributed to the Old Testament prophets. If Jews and Christians can look to those Old Testament prophets as moral models with all their questionable actions, Muslims can look to Muhammad as a moral model with all of his.
You say this, but you are an apologist WHEN you pretend that what they’re doing is not part of their faith.
So the sum of your argument is to pretend that Moslems aren’t acting Moslem, just ‘horrendous’ and it’s response to the west attacking them centuries after Moslems committed atrocities. That’s an apology for sure!
This is an argument you should be taking up with those many Muslims who condemn extremist terrorism as “not truly part of” Islam.

I would not let a non-Catholic claim he knows more about Catholicism than I, a Catholic, do. I suspect non-extremist Muslims would not appreciate you telling them what their religion teaches.

I do not see any purpose in telling a Muslim who regards the heart of his religion to be peace and compassion and who lives accordingly, who sees it as the force leading him to become a better person, that the essence of his religion is violence. Talk like that and you will be making an enemy where you did not have to have one.

I do not excuse any atrocities Muslims have commited against non-Muslims, but all this demonizing of Islam just looks to me like an elaborate dance of evading responsibility – Westerners do not want to admit to themselves the part they have played into making the Islamic world the mess that it is.

It is evading responsibility no different from that engaged in by Muslims who blame their woes entirely on Western colonialism and refuse to look at themselves for reasons for the same mess.

I am glad that our recent Popes have not been pandering to either side’s claims of exclusive victimhood.

I, for myself, do not deny that western secular governments have caused much bad feeling. Islamic run and islam-favoring governments have done quite a bit to foster western distrust of Islam.

Some, like the Taliban, Iran, Iraq, Palestine, and Pakistan, are black eyes and affronts to even many muslims. But they can find, in the Quran and 'Hadith, scritural support for their totalitarian xenophobia and anti-christian views.

And that is the frightening thing.

I agree with you. The qur’an is the support of Islam, destroy the credibility of al-qur’an and you destroy Islam.

What a poor revision of history you’ve given. Regardless of this Islam first faced eastern Christianity, and it struck at this. So the ‘west’ had nothing to do with attacks on Islam until some 400 years later -and that’s after Islam attacked it - through Spain, Sicily, etc. The ‘west’ was not Latin after the 1500s when Imperialism and expansion were beginning.

Then YOU can’t argue that Islam is responding to ‘the west’, at the very least you could say that Islam is responding to what they perceive as ‘the west’, and yet even that is to ignore the facts I raised above re: Islam’s attack on the west

I see a pattern that suggests that Islam’s hatred for Christianity can’t stem from simply 200 years ago - despite your wish to ignore previous history. The Islamic world struck first. That’s a start. The Islamic world has as it’s core a belief in conquest and expansion. That’s a continuation. “the west” has changed in all that time. It’s more secularist now, but Islam’s hatred for Christianity is still part of the Koran.

Imagine if you were living during the 100 years war and you only wanted to count up aggression going back 20 years. This war waged by Islam is indeed much longer, but it’s cause is not “the west” as I have shown. It is in the Koran. It’s absolutely a non-issue about ‘the west’, because wether the west was non-national, or dominated by the Latin Church, or split asunder by the Reformation, or become highly secularised or, even if it all went totally New Age, it’s still going to be a target of Islamic expansion.

There’s several differences.
The Old Testament is over. The Koran’s not got a ‘new Testament’. Moslem aggression has not be tempered by a peaceful Moslem version of Jesus.
The Old Testament is not an example for Christians; Christ is.
