Immodesty and the lack of respect for women - two sides of the same coin.

Let’s focus on bikinis. Bikini’s are never modest–that’s not my opinion. They are meant to expose a lot of skin and this crosses the lines of both modesty and appropriateness for just a fun day sitting by the water. Nobody needs to see a young woman at the beach in intimate wear like that–intimate wear that should only be worn in a dressing room as you’re changing your clothes. I don’t know about your husband, but my dad along with my brothers and close guy friends all know good and well what’s going off in their brains when they see a woman in a bikini pass by–and most of us women witness their reaction. Another thing JP II pointed out. It’s human nature.

Sorry, but the above IS your opinion. All of the above is YOUR opinion.

Let’s not make bad use of semantics to allow your opinions to come across as “fact”. That is misleading.

Do you have the “opinion” also that speedos are immodest too for men? So if a man is swimming in the Olympics in a Speedo, is he immodest? Why can’t he wear boxers???
IMHO women should wear dresses. The less flesh exposed, the less temptation. Also, what is the deal with women having a problem being subordinate to men? This idea isn’t new, its Biblical.
Now, that doesn’t mean men can beat women and treat them like dirt; but just as God’s Kingdom has a hierarchical order, so does the family structure.

Speaking of Speedos, I wonder, was I the only person (woman) who noticed and appreciated that Olympic-caliber swimmers have abandoned the Speedo in favor of the newer all-body or long pant-style speed suits. It was a relief to be able to watch men’s swimming without seeing a totally exposed physique as well as their maleness presented front and center in a tiny Speedo. I enjoyed the Summer Games so much more this time. Women were also wearing similar suits, that went either from racerback shoulders all the way to the ankles, or some wore the full body suits.
And man, were they lightning fast in the water!!!

Flesh isn’t a good thing.

Defintion of “modest”
  • marked by simplicity; having a humble opinion of yourself; “a modest apartment”; “too modest to wear his medals”
  • not large but sufficient in size or amount; “a modest salary”; “modest inflation”; “helped in my own small way”
  • free from pomp or affectation; “comfortable but modest cottages”; “a simple rectangular brick building”; “a simple man with simple tastes”
  • not offensive to sexual mores in conduct or appearance
  • humble: low or inferior in station or quality; “a humble cottage”; “a lowly parish priest”; “a modest man of the people”; “small beginnings”
  • meek: humble in spirit or manner; suggesting retiring mildness or even cowed submissiveness; “meek and self-effacing”
The Church has indeed spoken about sexual ethics. I think some of you should look that up.
This thread makes me laugh. Women in Afghanistan are covered from head to foot to the point of invisibility, yet are the least respected women on the planet.

Some people look for any excuse to disrespect women.
Read the whole thread please 🙂

Flesh isn’t a good thing.
Hi, StFrancisXavier! Glad to meetcha!

I wouldn’t go so far as to say “flesh isn’t a good thing”, because God created our material bodies and pronounced them “Good”. But with our fallen nature, in certain situations, exposed flesh, or flesh wrapped in clinging fabrics, can lead us to imaginings that are temptations to lust. I do not want to see male or female genitalia (including bare chests) on display. I suspect most Christians would agree.

As a side story, this past summer my DH and I took our kids to Hilton Head to the public beach. What a mistake! After that experience, I told my husband that we will never go to a public beach again. Why? Because several young women wearing string bikinis decided to spread out their sunbathing blankets RIGHT in front of us. It didn’t concern us until they started laying out and untying the backs of their string bikinis and pulling down the backs of their bikini panties to expose the top of their butt cheeks. There we were, a young man with his young family and very pregnant wife, and less than 6 feet away, this stupid twenty-something female decides to literally undress her entire backside so that she would have no tan lines. And no, Hilton Head is NOT a nude beach. At one time, it was known as a family playground. Now, looking around, I see that it has already become nothing more than a feast of flesh. Not many families, and a whole lot of exposed bodies. We left within the half hour, when we realized this young “lady” was going to continue to drop her panties lower and lower and then have her friend come over and massage oil onto her. And another one of the girls decided it was time to squat facing us and mess around with her navel piercing.

So, our bodies are good things, but our fallen nature leads us to behave immodestly, as well as leads us to see other human beings as objects to use instead of people to love.
I read recently that “God gave us people to love and things to use, but we often use people and love things.” This is what our fallen nature does to the good things that God gives to us.

I agree 100%. My point is that many who profess the faith of Christ, myself included, have been confused by what society teaches us regarding our sexuality.

I see many women present themselves before the Blessed Sacrament wearing exactly what is above or less. Our priests, deacons and laity need to educate women to cover themselves.

My heart goes out to you. That’s why we must stand against dress that even borders the lines of immodesty. Because we have been sitting back and letting dress get more revealing, as well as accepting immodesty as a “norm”, unpleasant things like this happen.

You agree bikinis are immodest, correct?

Do you spport Vatican II 100%? Be honest.
Yes. I support all of the teachings of God’s Church. Nowhere in the documents of Vatican II did I see the Holy Father or his bishops state that women need to shed their clothing in order to worship.
This principle applies to men as well. Shorts are not appropriate for worship. Common sense, especially in these United States has gone out the window.

Well, let me put it this way, for myself and any daughter of mine, we would not be caught dead in such attire. I like two-piece bathing suits, like a tankini, which still covers the whole torso, because it makes bathroom visits much easier than with a one-piece. But a tankini still covers the same as a one-piece. But I still feel the need to cover up even more with a long(ish) swim skirt to shield my thighs. I also see no problem with the sporty two-piece where there is the slightest of gaps between the racerback and the full-cut bottoms. But regular ole bikinis? Yes, I think they are meant more for the private jacuzzi experience than for public display.

sigh I used to look like that model when I was in college. drinks vodka I wish I looked like that again. Thanks a lot, now I’m depressed. 😦

I wore pants to chuch today, so there 😛

Mary wouldn’t have dressed this way if she were born in the last 20 years. Of course the picture of the actress is immoral!!! Who here has said otherwise?

This is a very weak example.
The Blessed Mother knew her role and her place, something women of today have forgotten.
Mary was born when she was in order to provide an example to all women through all ages. Now, do I expect women to wear the robes she does? No. Do I expect women to look like women and not men? Yep.

I’ve said it before, you are going to Hell. 😛

I wore jeans to Mass last night due to having to walk in mud to the bus stop. So I’ll join you down there. 😛 It’s fun to know that no matter what you do, you are doomed. So I played with my phone during Mass. Why not? I’m going to Hell anyway because I wore pants, so why not have fun? 😛 I also listened to my ipod instead of the horrible choir. And yelled “BORING” during the homily.

Note to people who don’t understand sarcasm, this post was sarcastic.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww your goin straight to Hell!!!

lol, j/k of course. 😃 Again, this is my personal pref and not Church teaching.
you ain’t so bad 🙂

I try so hard not to be a Pharasee and think I’m better than those terrible Tax Collectors 😃
