Richard, I am so awestruck and dumbfounded that I am completely unable to respond to your post.
Why are you “awestruck and dumbfounded”.
Similarly, when you posted the scriptures about Cain in support of the Saturday sabbath, I was so awestruck and dumbfounded that I was unable to adequately reply.
Again why so “awestruck and dumbfounded”.
The forest is too thick to see because of the trees.
What does this mean?
However, Benedict replied with what I knew was right, but I was unable to articulate in writing, due to the simplicity of the answer e.g. Cain was downcast because his offering was rejected by God and not because of a Saturday sabbath issue.
See, this is the reason that we don’t seem to be communicating. I never said that the reason for the offering of Cain to be rejected was a Sabbath issue. I answered a post by Javl where he said that the law was not given until Sinai. I was merely using this story to show that the law was given from the beginning. Gen.4
6And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
7If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, **sin lieth **at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.

Can’t you see the logic here me? If “sin lieth at the door” for Cain then the law (the ten commandments) had to have been in place. Because Rom.3:20Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. Now this must have been all ten including the Sabbath, because James says in ch. 2: 10For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. God’s moral law,. The ten commandments, are a set.

The law is like a mirror. Only this mirror can not show us that we are clean. It is designed by God to show us His perfect character and as a result can only show us that we are unclean, sinners, and in need of a Savior.

The Sabbath commandment is unique in that man can not see the logic in it. He can see the logic in all the rest. I mean it’s logical that we would be given laws to not kill one another or lie or commit adultry. Even the laws pertaining to God we can see why a holy God would not want us to bow down and worship false gods or why He would want us to keep His name holy. But the Sabbath commandment doesn’t have that logical confirmation attached to it. And that I believe is the reason it is a sign between God and His people. Ex.31
13Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you. The Sabbath MUST be entered into by FAITH.

Heb.4
10For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
11Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

The ONLY reason to keep the Sabbath, is because GOD SAID SO.
Richard, I do not want to offend you, simply because you believe that New Covenant Christians are still required to live under the Old Covenant’s Jewish Saturday sabbath.
Ya, the Sabbath is NOT Jewish. It was made for ALL mankind. Mark 2
27And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
Your conscience is clear and you sincerely believe that out of the integrity of your heart.
This is where we stand. Peace be to you. 🙂
Ya, I guess after one thousand plus posts we have pretty much covered our respective positions. I will pray for y’all and ask tht y’all pray for me.

Richard:

“benedict” and “me again” have given you very true and revealing answers. But, you still ignore and/or reject what is put before you because, even though it is the real truth, none of it agrees with your concepts. Paraphrasing benedict, we put a sumptuous feast of God’s real truths before you and invite you to at least look if not partake, but with the fogged up glasses you have on ( SDA’'s teachings ) you see nothing but rot, worms, and vermin.

I must say though that you have learned their methods and errors quite well. Your assemblage of non-contextual scriptural passages is truly amazing and at time envious. Sorry to say, I am not as adept at it as you are. But then, if these statements do not carry the truth or grossly distort it ( as does yours ) then, to me, they carry absolutely no weight. As I have mentioned before, anyone can quote scripture passages where God says to go out and sin, fornicate, murder, etc. Oh, well. Someday you will realize that what we have been trying to tell you IS the REAL TRUTH. I will always pray for you. Shalom.

If Cain and Able’s sacrifices were not for the atonement of their sins, what were they for? There is no command written in Genesis but it is clear that God must have given a Law of some kind. Genesis is a book that describes the origin of things and we have God’s example relating to the Sabbath, he rested on the 7th day, made it Holy and Sanctified it. I’m not sure how you can think that God’s last act of the week of Creation was ignored by his created beings.

Also, relating to your claim that the Sabbath was not for everyone consider the following from Isaiah 56 particularly vs 3, 6 and 7:
1 This is what the LORD says:
“Maintain justice
and do what is right,
for my salvation is close at hand
and my righteousness will soon be revealed.
2 Blessed is the man who does this,
the man who holds it fast,
who keeps the Sabbath without desecrating it,
and keeps his hand from doing any evil.”
**3 Let no foreigner who has bound himself to the LORD say,
“The LORD will surely exclude me from his people.”
And let not any eunuch complain,
“I am only a dry tree.” **
4 For this is what the LORD says:
“To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths,
who choose what pleases me
and hold fast to my covenant-
5 to them I will give within my temple and its walls
a memorial and a name
better than sons and daughters;
I will give them an everlasting name
that will not be cut off.
**6 And foreigners who bind themselves to the LORD
to serve him,
to love the name of the LORD,
and to worship him,
all who keep the Sabbath without desecrating it
and who hold fast to my covenant-
7 these I will bring to my holy mountain
and give them joy in my house of prayer.
Their burnt offerings and sacrifices
will be accepted on my altar;
for my house will be called
a house of prayer for all nations.” **

Although God gave His Law to the Isrealites in Exodus it is evident that it applied not only to them but to foreigners who ‘bind themselves to the Lord’. How? Serve Him, love his name, worship him, keep the Sabbath without desecrating it and hold fast to his covenant.
Don’t you remember that Adam and Eve lost Heaven because they sinned against God by listening to the serpent? There was no “Law” then, and no inference of it. The only way they knew of sin is because God told them so. Cain and Able, learned of sin from their parents and NOT from “the Law” as you state. Up until Moses gave the people “the Law”, the only way they knew about sin was by disobeying God directly. Viz. The tower of Babel, the Flood, Sodom and Gommorah, etc. There was no law then. Any conjecture that there was is strictly that, only conjecture.

It is certainly a position built upon circumstantial evidence, but the evidence is there. As I said, Genesis is a book that tells the Origin of things. It’s not a book about laws but it does indicate that God’s Law was present.
Even if we can’t agree on whether God’s Law was in effect in Genesis, certainly Isaiah 56 should put to rest the notion that God’s Law was only for the Isrealites.
What are your thoughts on it? I believe this shows that the Law was not only for the Isrealites but instead was for anyone who serve God, love His name, worship Him, keep the Sabbath without desecrating it and hold fast to His covenant.

Why are you “awestruck and dumbfounded”. What does this mean?
Some Jehovah Witnesses came to my front door to proselytize me. No matter what scriptures or opinions were presented to them, they were resolute in their interpretations of the bible. In like manner, so it is with the Adventists.

I agree with you on Isaiah 56. But then the writings of the Teachers of the Law ( scribes, Rabbis, Rebbem, etc. ) also carry some weight. They say that the Law, and covenant(s) were ONLY for the Israelites up until Jesus’s death on the cross. Remember, Jesus said to “listen to the scribes and teachers”. ( I had posted excerpts from these writings which you had rejected ).

This, then, is why Jesus ( who is God ) gave His followers a new Law and a new and everlasting covenant which replaced the old Law and covenant. ( Believe it or not, it includes the old Law ) We follow the new Law to the letter and honor and keep the new covenant to the best of our ability ( which I admit is not that great ). Even if you don’t accept it, we keep the Sabbath, but not on a Saturday. We serve God, love Him and His Name, and worship Him, and in no way do we disobey or dishonor God.

To Catholic Lover:

This part of what I had previously posted.

So, if the Christians were worshipping on Sunday, why wasn’t there an outcry in the Jewish church in Jerusalem, it was a church that most likely continued to meet on Saturday at the synagogue for several decades to hear the scriptures read. The reason they did not cry out in protest is because Jews believed then, and still believe now, that the Sabbath was given only to Jews. They NEVER expected Gentiles (which made up most of the early church) to keep the Sabbath. Notice the following passages:

( NOTE: )
``The children of Noah…were given seven Laws only, the observance of the Sabbath not being among them’’ (Midrash Deuteronomy Rabbah 1:21 [Soncino ed., p. 23], as quoted in C. Mervyn Maxwell and P. Gerard Damsteegt, eds., Source Book for the History of Sabbath and Sunday [Berrien Springs, Mich.: **Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, 1992], p. 75).

The Noachian laws are also listed in Midrash Genesis Rabbah 16:6 (Soncino ed., p. 131), Sanhedrin 56 a, b; andMidrash Song of Songs Rabbah 1:2(5) (Soncino ed. pp. 26-7) (ibid., p. 74). Gentiles could be considered righteous if they observed these laws, which did not include the Sabbath. Nor did they include restrictions about pork. Rabbi Judah could say that there was a time for the sons of Jacob when unclean beasts were still permitted to them'' (Hullin 7:6, as quoted in Maxwell and Damsteegt, p. 74 The rabbis did not think that the Sabbath had been given to Gentiles: Why does it say, `The Lord hath given you’’ (Ex. 16:29)? To you hath he given it [the Sabbath], but not to the heathen. It is in virtue of this that the Sages stated [Sanh. 56b] that if some of the heathen observed the Sabbath, then not only do they not receive any reward [but they are even considered to be transgressing]’’(Midrash Exodus Rabbah 25:11 [Soncino ed., p. 314], as quoted in Maxwell and Damsteegt, p. 74).

``A non-Jew who observes the Sabbath whilst he is uncircumcised incurs liability for the punishment of death. Why? Because non-Jews were not commanded concerning it… The Sabbath is a reunion between Israel and God, as it is said, `It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel’ (Ex. 31:17); therefore any non-Jew who, being uncircumcised, thrusts himself between them incurs the penalty of death… The Gentiles have not been commanded to observe the Sabbath’’ (Midrash Deuteronomy Rabbah 1:21 [Soncino ed., pp. 23-4], as quoted in Maxwell and Damsteegt, p. 75).

Further evidence of the antiquity of this rabbinic understanding comes from the second-century B.C. book ofJubilees: ``The Creator of all blessed it, but he did not sanctify any people or nations to keep the Sabbath thereon with the sole exception of Israel. He granted to them alone that they might eat and drink and keep the Sabbath thereon upon the earth’’ (Jubilees 2:31, James Charlesworth, ed., The Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, [New York: Doubleday, 1985], vol. 2, p. 58).

The question isn’t what the Rabbis understood, it is what God intended. I think Isaiah is more authorative on that issue.

I find the research about the laws given to Noah quite interesting, I’ll have to look into that further. Incidentally, the source you note in many of your posts appears to originate at my alma mater, Andrews University although I was not attending the seminary there.

We do not dispute the Law, any part of it or anything about it. What we do dispute is your interpretation and understanding of it.

What verse are you referring to here? I’m sure it’s not in the context of excluding any group of people from following His Law.

I’d be interested in the name of the book as well. Both Maxwell and Damsteegt are/were (Maxwell has passed away it appears) professors at the Seminary at Andrews in the Church History department.
I haven’t been able to find any “Source Book for the History of Sabbath and Sunday” although the quote Javl provided is used all over the internet by people arguing against the Sabbath. It occurs to me that they are most likely quoted out of context here considering who they are and where they teach. I imagine the message of their book or article is far different than the message that one quote is being used to put forward.

Ya, that’s my thought also. I had Maxwell’s two volume set God Cares on the exegesis of Daniel and Revelation. If you have not read them I highly recommend them. Maxwell (I’m not familiar with Damstreegt) is a dyed in the wool Adventist Sabbatarian. The quotes given by Javl apparantly are from the Midrash (a Jewish exigetical tool that opens the bible to personal interpretation) and altho it appears in the quotes that Maxwell and Damstreegt are advocating the ideas put forth. I can only believe that a closer examination of the work in question “Source Book for the History of Sabbath and Sunday” would reveal the exact opposite.

While I don’t agree with SDAs, I must say that you took Romans 14:2 out of context here. 🤷

Just for clarification…

It’s important to note that most Adventists are delightful people. The issue isn’t with the individual Adventists on a personal level**;** the issue is strictly with the SDA beliefs, which stem primarily from the teachings of Ellen G. White. By presenting Ellen White’s quotes, the goal isn’t to offend Adventists but, instead, is to show exactly what she has written**;** then the reader can make his own conclusions. Similarly, if this thread were entitled “Info on Mormonism,” then quotes from Joseph Smith would appropriately be presented.

May the Lord bless you with His will and His will alone. 🙂
