Well the Catholic Church is certainly one, holy Catholic, and apostolic, but at this point I’m wondering if it is any more than the Orthodox Church
Have you contacted an Orthodox priest yet about any questions that you might have or started with book or online resources about the Orthodox Church?

No but I should try that Is there any sort of catechism I can read?

I would like to second this advice. I’ve spent a lot of time on one of the major Orthodox forums on the web, and I still like to participate there, but it’s no substitute for speaking with your local Orthodox priest.

I think it would be better if priests simply investigated more thoroughly whether candidates have accepted Church teaching rather than delaying all of them unnecessarily. It is important to receive the grace of the sacraments and those who can should not have obstacles placed in their way. Doesn’t RCIA take at least six months?
Nine months

If you think about it, the term co-redemptrix isn’t that big of a deal.

Mary plays her role in your salvation as the mother of the Lord.

John the baptist plays his role by paving the way for Jesus, even to the point of martyrdom.

The apostles play their role by continuing Jesus message, even to the point of martyrdom.

The Orthodox say “Most HolyTheotokos save us!!" And that really doesn’t sit well with protestants either.

We essentially believe the same things about Mary.We both understand Jesus is our only Savior.

I don’t know about EO classes, but you can take RCIA with zero pressure to join the church.

God bless and best of luck.

The classics tend to be The Orthodox Church, which tends to talk more about the history of Orthodoxy (now 20 years old) and The Orthodox Way, which discusses more of Orthodox theology and practices. Both are written by Timothy/Kallistos Ware. There are others too that you can find on Amazon. Introducing the Orthodox Church: Its Faith and Life by Anthony M. Coniaris might be of interest too.

Thank you. Also, if I may, I hope you don’t think that I’m always trying to pick a debate/fight with you. I think we’ve interacted on this forum and the other one for awhile now, and I have nothing but respect for you, sir.

Also, about the initial inquiry, I plugged “Nashville” into the SCOBA parish locator with a 50 mile radius and found nine parishes.
  1. St. Elizabeth Church - 30.17 mi
    Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese
    321 W McKnight Dr.

On that list, I think that St. John Chrysostom Romanian Orthodox parish & the unnamed mission are the same thing. All of the contact information has the priests’ phone numbers. In the meantime, perhaps you could pick up a copy of Archbishop Kallistos/Timothy Ware’s book The Orthodox Church. Best of luck to you.
LOL, sure.
Obviously, “no Orthodox ever” is a bit of a hyperbole, but the point still stands. If you’re going to condescendingly brush off a comment made by two people, then back it up with some sources. Tell us, oh great Eastern Orthodox theologian, why you think downplaying serious theological differences is going to help anyone.

Most Holy Theotokos, save us!!!

^^^ We get accused of Marian idolatry yet we don’t even say that kind of stuff during Mass.

Let’s see, title Theotokos which protestants object to.

Asking for her intercession which protestants object to.

Icons which protestants object to.

"For through her hath salvation come to the whole human race"

^^ever hear that one before? Sounds kind of co-redemptrixy" to me!!!

Yes, there are differences. Catholic church defined things and the orthodox didn’t although the beliefs are very similar. And that was my point oh great Eastern Orthodox theologian.

From what my Orthodox friends have told me, Marian devotion is constrained by the liturgy. In Roman Catholicism, Marian devotion mostly takes place outside the limiting influences of the liturgy and hence, there are more abuses and sometimes downright scary excesses. Also, have you read St. Louis de Montfort’s “true devotion to Mary”? He teaches that because of our sinfulness, Christ refuses to listen to our prayers and so we have to reach him through Mary. Frankly, it obscures grace. He also advocates devotion to Mary as an easier way to salvation, which flies against the face of Orthodoxy’s emphasis on asceticism. The point is, there are strains of theology within the Roman Catholic Church that overemphasize Mary to the exclusion of her Son.

No I have not read it and I don’t really disagree with much of what you said. There are un-catechized heretics within or around the church. i mean over a billion Catholics so you will always have factions from within that are unorthodox. (no pun intended)

We call them “rosary Catholics.” Personally, I think their “devotion” is taken too far and they need to be checked.

But as someone who has attended RCIA I know for a fact the focus is on Jesus Christ, not the blessed Mother. That’s why I invite anyone to attend and see for yourself if what Rome is doing is of excess. Mary did say all generations will call her blessed…we do every Sunday at Mass and the Orthodox honor her as well. Protestants don’t call her at all.

What, lil ol’ me? 😊 :pshaw:

Not exactly. In the late 90s I was in a Catholic discussion group that was reading it. I stopped attending after about three meeting – but honestly I can’t remember if it what the passages that we read that bothered me, or just the attitudes of people in the group.
