Internet "WWW" == Sign of the Beast?

Mark of the beast is 666, right?

Oh by the way, did you know that the Phoenician alphabet was a forerunner of the Hebrew alphabet. And that a letter with the “W” sound is used in both languages for the number “6”.

Of course, a Jewish web site says that the number six hundred sixty six would not be written as www. Because www would be interpreted the same way you look at roman numerals – www would be the number 18.

Does anyone know what the original language is in the book of Revelations? Whether it was www mistranslated as 666? Or whether it was something else?

It really doesn’t seem too far fetched to think that someday soon we may well need the Internet (www) to buy and sell. It is becoming quite popular to do almost everything on the Internet.

Not to get anybody too nervous. I’m Baptist and only recently signed up for RCIA.
 
And, I’ve also heard that Oprah is the AntiChrist. Is that true??? 🙂

The original language of Revelations was Greek, and YYY, the Greek equivalent of WWW, does not equal 666, so you need not worry.
 
You know, I think that too big a deal is made over the numbers 666. Several years ago, I had gone into a Hardee’s to eat. The total came to $6.66. When something was said about it, I said, not to worry. At a previous job the phone number ended with 666, and my checking account also had those numbers. The girl then said she didn’t know if she wanted to wait on me or not. Stupid, stupid, stupid. The numbers by themselves mean nothing.

The septuagint is ancient Greek. John on the Island of Patmos wrote in what language? Somebody says Greek. But even so, he was writing to a Churches that had a lot of Jews. And he says somebody with wisdom would figure it out. So 666 could be thought about by a Jewish person as three sixes in a row – www.

How is the number 666 writen in the septuagent? As a number or as letters?

Go ahead and laugh it off. After all, I’m not a seminarian.

The laughing is NOT about legitimate attempts to understand the content of Holy Scripture, which I’m sure is the intent of the inquiry.

However, the inquiry does call to mind some rather fanciful interpretations of Revelations, which seemed to forget that it was apocalyptic literature.

It is the promotion of the outcome of these fanciful attempts that is the occasion for any laughter, not what we’re about here.

Well, my house is 999, where does that put me? I read a true story about a Satan’s High Priest and THEY say that 999 is the REAL number. And that this priest’s birthday is on the 18th (which is mine also) which equals 9. :eek: :bigyikes: :eek:

Actually I only started the thread because www is my best guess. It is only a lousy guess, but I think it is more likely than barcodes (a similar thread that started before I started this one).

If www == 666 == the mark of the beast, I suppose it only means that “the beast” will use the Internet as a tool. And require everyone to use the Internet as part of its evil plan.

But it is far from known.

What is the beast? I don’t know. And I think our time is better spent on other things.

But without argument, there are several evil beasts on the internet. Porn. Adultery-made-easy. Internet-addiction. Gambling. Perhaps others I am unaware of.

There are also good things on the Internet (this forum).

doesnt “the beast” already use the internet as a tool? doesnt he try to use everything as a tool? remember that evil can never create, it can only use and abuse.

Sane Bible scholars basically agree that 666 was a representation of the nme of the emperor Nero, who started the first Roman persecution of Christians. The Revelation was written in Greek, and used the same characters to represent numbers. The Greek representation of Nero’s name adds up to 666.

But, some Latin manuscripts rendered Nero’s name in its Latin form and this explains why some manuscripts read 616 instead. The 616/666 discrepancy is applicable only to Nero’s name when touched by Greek and Latin conventions…

No doubt an Antichrist will appear, but it’s crazy to look for 666 in barcodes, biometrics, dollar notes, the Pope, Bill Gates, and Ellen G. White. There have been many antichrist-wannabes before, and there will be more to come.

"Perfect imperfection is symbolized by 666, falling 3 times short of 7. In Rev. 13:18 the number is called a person (a beast) meaning possibly a set of people or an institution headed by a person or group of people. It seems to mean a name the letters of which , when regarded as numerals total 666. In both Hebrew and Greed, letters are used for numbers, the value corresponding to the place in the alphabet; by adding up the number values in a word, a name or word may be obtained. St. Irenaeus interpreted 666 to mean Lateinos. Other have interprete to mean popes (Like Leo X), emperors, generals (like Napolean), religious reformers (like Knox or Luther) and of course Hitler. The most common interpretation is Nero Caesar, determined by using the Hebrew consonants for that name along with their traditional number values. "

Not exact…I ignored some punctuation in there,e tc. but the wording is just as in the book.

I read a better explanation somewhere and I can’t seem to find it. I think it was in Fr. Aamoth’s book, but when I skimmed it I couldnt’ find the page. If you’d like I’ll keep looking… I know it was the best explanation I’ve ever seen anywhere…and much more detailed than the one above which has a lot of conjecture.

I tend to believe the interpretation wherein 666 refers to Nero. If the number of the beast was meant to signify “www” then it would have been completely meaningless to John’s original audience and Christians in general for the next 19 or so centuries.

I just don’t think the Holy Spirit intended *any * scripture to be understandable *only * to some future generation.
