An absolutely silly thing for people to get excited about. Numerology (or letterology???) is not only silly, but may be immoral if one takes it seriously.

Revelation’s symbolism is most certainly multi-layered. In that vein, in addition to the meaning of 666 as Nero’s name, we can posit a further theological meaning. We can look back to the Fall itself, which contains a great deal of insight into the nature of sin and mystery of iniquity, of which the beast primarily symbolizes.

The devil’s questions and lies are loaded with allegorical meaning:

“Did God *really *say…?” Translation: Is God really trustworthy?

“You will most surely not die!” Translation: God is a liar, and you can violate God’s commandments and get away with it.

“Your eyes will be opened, and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil.” Translation: You, not God, are the arbiter of truth and order, both in morals and in life’s ultimate questions. You don’t need God at all, not to know what is good and evil, nor for your own happiness. You can determine your own moral and religious truth and order yourself.

Then, going back to the number 666, its meaning can be seen as the fullest imagery of sin itself. To explain, in mortal sin, man reverses the order that should be. Specifically, instead of God being God, man makes himself his own god, choosing to make an inferior, created good take the place of God, thinking that the inferior good is in fact superior to the Infinite, Uncreated Good of God, that he can choose it in place of God, that it will give him ultimate happiness, and that he will escape the consequences (both temporal and eternal). In effect, then, man, in mortal sin, is deifying himself, at least figuratively speaking.

Hence, when we examine the three sixes of “666,” we can recall that God is Three Persons in One Nature. And, as we have seen, as 7 is God’s perfect number, 6 is an appropriate symbol of man, who is great imperfection, who falls short of God’s perfection. Hence, we have man, or 6, three times in one number, as God is Three Persons in One Nature, hence symbolizing man making himself as if he were God. This relates well with St. Paul’s language in 2 Thess. 2, where he speaks of the “man of sin,” or Antichrist, sitting in the Temple of God, “shewing himself as if he were God.”

But the beast need not then be confined merely to Nero or the Antichrist at the end of the world. In effect, the Early Fathers, as per the Douhay Rheims footnotes, saw the Beast as a symbol of the “entire company of infidels, persecutors, and enemies of the People of God, from the beginning to the end of the world.” In that vein, the Beast can image any major era of sin, where sinful man wages a major resistance to the Divine Plan for Redemption. Hence, the Beast can symbolize the Pre-Flood Corruption, just as much as the Tower of Babel, or Egypt, or Israel’s unfaithfulness in the Old Covenant, or the Western World’s current unfaithfulness to the* New* Covenant.

Hence, in the Western World, which is now a society of antichrist, man is deifying himself through his arrogant mockery and defiance of God, thinking that he does not need God, that he can forge a utopia through materialistic ends, that he can sin and violate God’s moral order on all fronts (abortion, contraception, fornication, divorce and remarriage, materialism) and not only will it work, but that he will get away with it.

To my Canadian friend, a funny story (I hope),

When I was about 19 years old, I was working at a gas station (summer vacation time, from the seminary), and some guys came in and asked to “fill 'er up,” I notice that they had some Jack Chick tracts :tsktsk: on the front seat, WE–LLLL, being young and mischievious  , when the gas pump stoped at about $6.00 I kept trying to get more in until it got to $6.66 :o . You should have seen their faces when I asked the driver for “six dollars and sixty-six cents please?” :bigyikes:

This reminds me: The back of the US $1 bill Has two sayings in Latin: “Annuit Coeptis” and “Novus Ordo Seclorum.” I have no clue what the fist saying means, but I’ve heard two different translations for the second. Most people say it means ‘A New Order for the ages’ but I’ve heard others say it means “A New Order without God.” Any Latin scholars out there who can give me a hand?

Interesting.

Annuit Coeptis…the meaning is vague, as its is lacking a subject. It means (something) favors our undertaking.

Novus Order Seclorum…means the new order of ages or the new world order.

Interesting…
Blessings,
Shoshana

Well, I’m no Latin scholar, but as far as I know:

*novus * – new
*ordo * – order
*seclorum * – secular

loosely translated – new secular order.

Now, how you define “secular”, then, can be debatable 😉

A dear friend of mine who passed away recently would always get upset with me when I would put a certain # up for a song on the song board in church. Guess what # that was?

Educate yourselves…the Internet and the WWW. are different… www.istheBeast.com traditional Hebrew does make it 666. Religious on board, awaiting Papal approval. The research is clear, pending truth.

Mark of the beast is 666, right?

www would be interpreted the same way you look at roman numerals – www would be the number 18.

Not to get anybody too nervous. I’m Baptist and only recently signed up for RCIA.
6+6+6=18

gasp! an exbabtist…I will be advised. hehe
Welcome !

I keep telling people that David Hasselhoff is the Anti-Christ, but no one will listen. After all, it’s every bit as sensible as the nonsense being pandered by Calbreese in this thread.

RNRobert,

My Latin is pretty rusty, but “annuit coeptis” means approximately “beginning with this year” and the Roman numeral at the bottom of the pyramid with the eye at the top (Masonic, I believe) is MDCCLXXVI, i.e. 1776.
