The Church has benefitted greatly by modenizing her approach to the media.
Sounds like corporate jargon. i.didnt see any sign of benefitting last year when the New York Times and the other "news" media launched their vicious, slandering attacks on the Pope. They swipe at us every chance they can get; and they always know which dissenters to pick as "Catholic" "spokespersons". Dont tell me these media are just plain ignorant: they know what they`re doing! 😦
Good PR counseling could also be a positive approach.
PR firms make some of us suspicious. Back when i was in the workforce, it was the corporate entities that werent so good that spent heaps on propaganda to make the public think otherwise. The art of lying was part of it. Maybe its different in your part of the world. 🤷

If some erring Church hierarchs got back in with the loyal ones, the results would speak for themselves…*** Actions speak louder than words!***
We don`t want speech writers!

It’s the **lack **of a good PR structure that allows that to happen. If the Church made it very clear, for example, who speaks for her, the dissenters would lose credibility. The networks might still go to them for “sound bites” but they would have less weight.

The media foray I was speaking of was the Church’s relatively new efforts to capitalize on new media, to use social networking and to support media efforts especially at the diocisan level.

I worked in manangement at “corporate entities” for 20 years. My role was not in PR but I worked closely with the Marketing and PR departments I never witnessed our organization use PR to lie to the public.

Sure bad organizations will use PR to spin information their way. But just because a few bad organizations use PR firms, doesn’t mean that all PR is bad. Would you say that hiring accountants is bad just because some bad organizations hire accountants?

PR is not speech writing.

Theyd still use the dissenters. The last thing about the Church the "news" media want is ***The Truth***. :( If the Church used a PR outfit, our enemies would probably say that she has something to hide; and i wouldnt blame `em.

Thats a bad analogy. Well have to agree to disagree; but my experience was that the lousier an organisation, the more it trumpeted itself, or paid someone else to do it. It was a sort of in advance Damage Control.

As an aside: if there`s such a thing as “corporate conceit”, my employer was bloated with it.

Well, it`s about wording, anyway. 🤷

Off topic. 😊

I am a Catholic living in Ireland. Yes our country has been rocked to its foundations with the abuse scandals and cover ups, and quite rightly so. At first there was disbelief, great, great anger, complete shock, which went on and on as more facts became known. The guide lines were set down by Church and state and we began to trust in that, and come to terms and prayers for the victims and their families.
Our own national television station Telefis Eireann is one of our biggest enemies. They drag out the most negative areas with little or no voice given to the moderate voice - actually they cut them off. All of this is done with our young people listening and great great damage is being done to them, so many of them just do not want to know about the Faith, Priests Mass or anything else.
Mr Enda Kenny ( Prime Minister) gave another shock to traditional Catholics when it was suggested to break the seal of confession, separation of Church and State, break with the Vatican get the religious out of our schools and so on.
Yes we await the report from the Vatican with eagerness, hoping for rightful justice, but also holding firm to the guidance of the successor of Peter. Encouragement for our youth ( there are 3,000 young people to world youth day) :👍 Our victims and young people need our prayers so much - they are our future to carry on the Faith In Ireland and of course our Priests
Just as little thought into the subject of separation of Church and State I think any of you who watched Fr.Groeschel’s interview last week with Archbishop Dolan of New York, EWTN would agree that it was a wonderful interview, and the points made so simply.
Pax Christi 🙂

How bad is it? I did a little web search and 87% of the people are still RC. I don’t see how such a strong catholic nation could just break away from us like that.

Statistics:you can get statistics for all your opinions…

Oh, and a link to a news article is a usual requirement of posting in the News section.

i would say 85 per cent is way off. it also depends on your meaning of catholic. a lot of my friends say they are catholics, and in truth they have been baptised as catholics, but their beliefs at best can be described as mixture of various christan belief’s. the media has played a hugh part in this, the national brodcaster RTE attacks and belittles the faith and protrays anyone who believes as country bumkins.
unfortunatly most take their daily news feeds from this brodcaster

Define the ‘us’ in that sentence.

BTW, ever heard of the American Heresy?
us - the catholic church. I’ll admit that I’m not too knowledgable at the topic, but based on what I know, Ireland has been a great catholic country for several years. I’ve always viewed Ireland as the western counterpart of my country, the Philippines. All of a sudden, I read news reports about the growing tension between church/state and Ireland’s breaking away from the Catholic faith (or something across those lines). News like that just breaks my heart, especially since we just finished reading about the great saints of Ireland such as St Patrick and St Bridget in religion class a few months back.

And no, I have never heard of the American heresy and I apologize if I posted this in the wrong section. I’ll be viewing this thread again tom but I won’t be able to reply due to school work. Thanks.

I suggest you inform yourself about the clerical sexual abuse scandals in Ireland and the issues surrounding the separation of church and state there.

poof it’s not as easy as yellow belle suggests, Ireland grew extremely wealthy over a short period of time, on top of the scandal of the clerical sexual abuse. Irish people considered them to sophistacted to believe in God anymore that was for a bye gone era. the irish media and political class prides itself on having moved on from being a God fearing society, recently a man put his name forward to be presisdent david norris. this man had an extreme view on having sex with children yet the media tried to push him onto the people, so we could be the first to elect a gay man, as president, to show the world how far we have progressed.

I didn’t suggest it was easy. I suggested that the clerical abuse scandals and the issues of separation of church and state were good places to start for someone with absolutely no knowledge of Ireland and Catholicism beyond the lives of its patron saints and some out of date statistics.

We already have a very famous gay man and a great humanitarian in our history in the person of Roger Casement of course, although he of course was from a totally different era. Or of course Oscar Wilde, also a famous gay Irishman from another era. Oddly enough both were converts to Catholicism. I have no problem with a gay Irish president, but Norris would not be my choice, but NOT because he is gay.Norris has withdrawn from the race to be Irish president, a point you do not mention.

no it wouldn’t be fair to say that at, all but i realise you live in london and obviously your not up to speed in what happens here in ireland.
as for the rest of your piece at has really little to do with the thread. weather or not you have anything against a gay president or which other irish people were gay . i was pointing out the media coverage of his involvment. all of the comments by rte were for norris and the vast majority of the print media lauded him. if a priest had did or made the comments he did they would have rightly been lambasted by the media.
i didn’t mention he pulled out of the race. “the media tried to push him on to the people”
tried is pastence the race for president is still going on. and it’s was not that relevant to the piont I was making

belle disagrees with me, that’s totally out of context but nothing knew there for you, norris may not be out of the race but obviously with you not being up to date with irish affairs you don’t know that rte were puting forward today that ff (micheal martin for you)
should put him into the race

I think it would be very fair to say so. I live in Ireland and am very much up to speed on what happens here. Norris was ahead in every opinion poll right from the start of his campaign and this continued through the ‘pederasty interview’ (revealed by a journalist, btw) and even to some extent in the Ezra Nawi affair. If you have proof that RTE favoured him, you should complain to the Broadcasting Standards Authority as that is a serious accusation against the national broadcaster for whom you pay a licence fee. Newspapers are commercial entities and are entitled to espouse any candidate or political cause they wish just as you are entitled not to buy or read them.

For the record, I never considered David Norris to be suitable for the Presidency, not because he’s gay but because he is indiscreet, has poor judgement and couldn’t be relied upon to be diplomatic, an essential quality in a non-political head of state.

Baiting other posters is against forum rules, not to mention charity.
