Unitarians specifically don’t believe in the trinity. That is what makes us Unitarians.
And, the one of the founding principals of Universalism is universal salvation, meaning nobody will be left behind, nor condemned.
So, according to the founding principals of my faith, the answer is no, a “proper understanding of the trinity” is unnecessary.
