Is being Fat considered gluttonous?

I’m fat, too. And God loves me.
The problem is, what is it to be fat? A person can be fat to one person or to themselves, and yet skinny to another.

I guess I could call part of me fat, but not many would call me fat.

As an older person who needs to lose weight let us not forget the role that necessary medications can play. I have been on medications that made me lose weight and now am on one that makes me gain. Of course exercise would help but I have had four lung infections since Christmas. I do however look perfectly healthy.
So don’t be quick to judge.

I can’t believe we are having this discussion! Highly overweight people face so much discrimination already do you really need to pile on a fairly obscure “sin”? Instead of concentrating on how much one individual eats, how about we examine how our own food supply throws away immense amount of foods. Go find a documentary on it, they’re out there. We refuse to eat things that don’t look perfect, we toss food out at the retail and production level, and we dump food we cooked to much of. This is the real sin around food.

Probably as it is indicative of habitually consuming more than you need.
An unfortunate generalization.

People living in poverty are often “fat” not because they consume more than they need, but because their income is not sufficient to buy items needed in a balanced diet…beans, rice, tortillas may be inexpensive and filling, but the nutritional balance is not good.
I see your point.

But for every person “where diet and exercise aren’t enough”, there’s a legion of those for whom it is.

For most of us, diet and exercise ARE enough. Excuses are just waaaay easier.

Workout more or eat less food. The size of your bottom is, primarily, a function of these two things.

There are many causes of being overweight or obesity (a range, not a certain point or weight). I look at the following as a five legged chair. Kept in balance overall health can improve. All are important.
Diet
Exercise
Medication
Stress
Sleep

Diet. Start where you are and make a small change that you can live with and make permanent. Then add a second. If you are looking for a specific diet, would suggest consulting a dietician.

Exercise. Maybe a better work is activity. There are many different things for people with varied current lifestyles and abilities. Could be walking a set amount, cleaning activity, or some strengthening from a chair if that is all that is possible.

The point I would make is to start where you are and make small continuous changes.

Realize that there are 3 basic human body types with which people are born with: the endomorph, characterized by a preponderance of body fat; the mesomorph, marked by a well-developed musculature; and the ectomorph, distinguished by lean and long body that has a lack of much fat or muscle tissue.

I But what diet?
Those folks need to #adultup.

Figure out your own diet. Regardless what it is, (Net Change in My Butt Size) = (Calories Consumed) - (Calories Burned) for the vast, vast majority of us.

Sure, there’s little metabolic kinks and genetic issues here and there, but that’s the gospel of a buddy of mine who got his master’s in physical therapy after finishing a bachelors in nutrition.

If you’re reading this, you’re probably not one of the exceptions. I’m not.
Unless your musculoskeletal system is in top form or you can afford a kinesiologist…
…then you should just be ok with being fat, right?

C’mon man…
For most people, it’s not that they’re lazy, it’s that it becomes too overwhelming, too expensive, or just to tiring to deal with in a world that has them in survival mode just to get through the week.
It’s hard. I get it. It’s why I’m probably a pant size higher than I should be.

But the primary culprit for that is the dude I see in the mirror each morning while I shave.

Zipping my lip because I have lots of reasons to have those extra pounds but they are all excuses.

The point is, especially with strangers, you just don’t know, so you may very well be worse off judging a fat person than that person is for being a glutton.

Objectively speaking, of course gluttony is a sin. It very well could manifest itself as extra weight. But that doesn’t give me a right to be prideful, and that doesn’t mean that people who don’t show potential evidence of sin on their bodies are sinless.

When judging a fat person remember that person may not be a glutton.

I’ll agree with that we should avoid making off-the-cuff judgments.

Obviously I’m not your ultimate judge!

SeriousQuestion:
It is sin to be gluttonous by eating too much, but is being Fat gluttonous?
No, because some ppl don’t have good metabolisms or have other health problems that make it difficult to loose weight
I don’t think it’s hardly ever a good idea to use the “1%” as a shield for the “99%”, phil.

If you’ve bad knees or can’t walk then you have to find a way to eat less than those who can. One of your crosses to bear…

Anywho, I’ve made my point clear I think. Thanks for the forum.
You know what… I’m sorry, but you have NO IDEA what you are talking about here.

I’m overweight. Not super fat, but clinicaly obeese.

I come from a whole family of (one one side) of fat people. It’s in our genes.

I’m currently trying loose weight, but I can’t do it in my own, so I have see a Dr who specializes in diabetes - even though I don’t have diabetes. I’m on two different medications to help me loose weight.

It’s doesn’t matter what I eat or don’t eat, my I produce a ton of sugar and fat.

And before you say “exercise,” you have to understand that have bad knees and back (partly due to genetics and partly due to being a little over weight.

So exercise is quite painful. Plus, (which is even worse) I’m always fielding emails and phone calls for work from 6am to 11pm. So it’s also frankly very difficult for me to find the time to go to the gym for a good workout.

When I was skinny, which was until I was around 25/26, I used to say the same thing as you.

But now I know it’s very hard, esp for people who have the genes for obesity.

God Bless

You should see my active obese 92 year old mother in law. She eats like a bird but comes from a long line of overweight people.
Saying it is her cross to bear comes of as cold hearted.

In 2010 i was 280lbs. That’s “fat” at any height.

I finally got tired of all the really credible sounding excuses I’d mastered.

Not saying that’s what any particular person here is doing.

Thanks for the Chat.

Sometimes the truth is hard. It just is.

In a very extreme example, my buddy I referenced above would always say the same thing when told that it was impossible for someone to lose weight.

“Ah, so if the Nazi’s locked them up in Auschwitz, they still wouldn’t lose weight?”

Asinine, sure.

But it makes the point that success does exist. It just seemingly costs more than a “reasonable” person would pay in that situation.

My point is you just don"t know. Nobody knows the state of the soul of another.

Sometimes people exercise a lot so that they could afford to be gluttons, so there are plenty of thin gluttons. But, as someone who used to be overweight and now am on the thinner side of healthy from exercise, I believe that we in the developed world make too many excuses not to improve ourselves. I’m always floored at how massive a lot of my classmates in college are despite the fact that 1. We are too young to have bad joints 2. Our metabolisms are at their peaks and 3. We get a membership to the campus gym included with our tuition.

Also, I saw the word fat phobia on this thread. It’s not a thing. It’s a concept made up by people who insist that everyone else has a problem. I’m not justifying being mean to those overweight, but, most people have the power to take that ammo away from their bullies if they try.
