I came across a board discussing this… I think my Religion is getting too controlling. Everyone said Christians should NOT go to amuesment parks and, get this, Sporting events! …

I think Christianity is getting too controlling. However, I’m open to all opinions.

There certainly are sects of Christianity that are very controlling.

Some groups that are Christian…or call themselves Christians…can be quite controling indeed. But that is not the authentic expression of Christianity.

This sort of law-oriented (instead of Gospel-oriented) approach has always been around, ISTM. It is nothing new, the idea that I can earn righteousness by what I do, or what I deny myself. The fact is Christ does not say, “go and enjoy life no more.” He says go
And sin no more." A roller coaster is not sin, neither is a ball game ( all though the way the Phillies have played this year feels sinful).

the Eagles have much to repent for with the way they played last season. I am willing to forgive them so long as they do better or show improvement this year. 😃

I don’t find Christianity in general to be controlling. As others have said there are pseudo-Christian cults and such that use the faith of followers in a controlling manner. I think the other side (liberals) can be much more controlling or trying to take control.

Easy solve to that problem… Go to another church!!! God Bless!!!

That’s one of the things I appreciate with being Catholic. The Catholic Church does not micromanage your life. 🙂

Everyone says? I’ve never been told that in my life.

I never heard anyone say that before. Do they say why they think that? Is the idea that it is a waste of time and money that could be used helping others or something like that? I can’t see anything sinful about most amusement parks and sporting events.

No, Christianity is not too controlling. The people on the discussion board you were on are too controlling.

I think if there is a required entrance fee, or participation fee, a second thought of the overall goal of the church might be a good evaluation.

There’s a big name mega church around here, I saw the pastor being interviewed by Oprah in his mansion. To be fair, he could have old money or inheritance, but I think the point of the show was how he built himself an empire through church giving.

I think someone said the church has a mandatory % of your pay that is to be directed right to a church account.

I think from this simple ‘requirement’ of some churches stems thoughts like the op mentions. People start thinking crazy and twisting basic Christian teaching.

My Church teaches tithing, but there is no minimum to show up for mass. The teaching is not an effort to make someone feel like garbage, or that they are not worthy unless they pay up.

A great lesson of tithing is to help us see and experience freedom FROM the world.

Being forced to give or give up anything, is not doing something good in love, as love is never forced, it’s freely given.

This is simply an example of errant fundamentalism. It appears that they are inadvertently telling you their particular weakness, and what leads them to sin.

They are “going by the book” - but in reality they are going only by what they think the bible means.

there’s a lot of scrupulosity and immaturity among the RCs. read any number of the, “is it a sin” threads. understood wrongly, its not surprising that christianity seems such a killjoy.

Ouit of 1.2 BILLION members, there are going to be strays. But, we are no better, as we struggle in different areas. At least they have the humility to ask.

perhaps, or maybe its a sign that catechesis has gone off the track.

For Catholics, participation in everything is totally voluntary. 😃
