Is "conversion or reparative" therapy ever ok?

For all those here who don’t think this kind of “therapy” is an issue, I would really encourage you to educate yourself on the activities done as a part of it. Really look into it. Conversion thereapy is not talk therapy. It isn’t therapy where a medication is prescribed. DIg into it. It is aversion therapy, i.e. an attempt to cause someone to develop an aversion to something. It is done in a most harmful way.

Exactly. First, it presumed the homosexuality, gender confusion or body dysmorphia are the child’s natural, healthy state and ignores that the child is suffering. It ignores the very high rates of depression, anxiety, low confidence and other mental health issues that contribute to an accompany many of these issues. It ignores the fact that many of these kids have not completed puberty and/or are not socially competent and confident, and have not yet finished discovering their adult selves or sexual attractions. Even a 22 year old does not yet have maturity regarding long term consequences. Kids under mid twenties really do not understand that what they face and feel today is not permanent.

Isn’t it illogical to insist on people’s right to change sex but refuse them the right to change sexuality?
Wow, that’s going to be my number 1 one liner from now on. So short and simple and yet nobody can explain away the obvious logic in that line. Incredible

nobody can explain away the obvious logic
I am not so sure about that, considering that it makes a claim that is not supported by facts. No one is refusing the rights of adults to change anything about their sexuality if they can. the only thing being refused is the ability to use an ineffective and potentially harmful therapy on minors. Please note that I am not advocating the other way; I don’t agree with allowing minors to undergo gender reassignment therapies, whether medical, psychological, or surgical either. Some things are too significant to be done to anyone other than a freely consenting fully informed adult.

I see where you are coming from yes. Although I think some people do want to ban it generally and either do not release or do not care that such a law will effect fully consenting adults. I’m glad you’ve made a distinction between adults and children, but sadly I don’t think everyone will do who has law making power

The idea of changing a gay kid into a straight kid…not going to work. But we are creating tons of confused kids due to the liberal agenda to sexualize kids so young, pretending we are ALL on some confused spectrum.
Yes. The current agenda of sex education of children from kindergarten forward, long before they are even biologically or emotionally able to deal with such matters, is its own form of pre-emptive sexual conversion therapy attemptng to sexualize children before they are prepared. It deprives them of their innocence.

My concern is that, by the numbers, the population of LGTB people is growing, something that should not be possible considering that reproduction is not possible through homosexuality. More interestingly, it is growing substantially more in younger people. So my skepticism of this orientation always being something one is born with is not without data. This data must be accounted for. If gay orientation is a matter of biology, this data makes no sense. I see no other option except there being some other thing that accounts for this increase and age discrepancy.
There’s no solid evidence that the number of LGBT people as a percentage of the general population is growing. What has changed is that LGBT people are much more visible now than what they used to be 20 or 30 years ago because it’s much safer and more socially acceptable to be openly gay or lesbian or transgender. LGBT people are more willing to come out to their families, school mates, and work colleagues whereas in the past, they would have remained closeted because they feared losing their jobs, embarrassing their families or getting bullied at school. It’s much easier for young people to come out now to their parents and other family members in their teens instead of never coming out to them at all or waiting until much later in life. Also, many states now have laws that protect LGBT people from discrimination in housing and employment which makes it easier to come out.

I’m almost 60 and am now out to most of my relatives and other people in my life, but during my teens and my first twenty years as an adult, I was in the closet and was mostly out only to a small group of gay friends. It’s older LGBT people like me and younger ones now finding it safer to reveal our sexual orientation or gender identity that is making us more visible and making it appear that there are more LGBT people than in the past.

If that’s the case, I can’t speak to Canada or Canadian law, but for legal adults, this won’t fly in the United States. Self-determination is an ethical tenet of the social work and other mental health professions. If somebody wants to abstain from sex , it would be unethical and quite possibly illegal to stop them from seeking support.

Because a lot of people are harmed by this “therapy”.
Any parallels in other areas where sex is not involved? If not, then I cannot help but see an agenda based on morality (or immorality), not science.
And, just to draw a quick parallel here, the Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t believe in blood transfusions as they believe that it’s a violation of God’s law according to their interpretation of the Bible.

I’d support the right of a member of that faith to refuse that treatment for themself, but I wouldn’t support their right to refuse it for their child.
Quite frankly, if the same bill ended sexual dysphoria therapy, reassignment, and all the other stuff for minors, I would say then there was no hypocrisy, no gay agenda, that it truly was about making minors safe, and not recruiting to increase the numbers of homosexuals. Again, the data is quite revealing that there has been a huge increase in what is conjectured to be a biological orientation.

Then a compromise might be to eliminate those elements which are problematic from this therapy, and all other therapy, for minors.

I keep seeing references in this thread to people wanting to change their behavior. That’s not the goal of conversion therapy. It’s the attempt to make the person with same sex attraction feel sexual feelings towards the opposite sex, and if possible do away entirely with feelings towards the same sex.

The reason you keep seeing those references is that based on the definition of conversion therapy in Canada, it includes therapy to change behavior as conversion therapy. I’ve quoted the definition twice in this thread but nobody seems to care.

The legislation is simply trolling and powerlust from special interest groups and has nothing to do with the welfare of children.

Hint. Looking at pornographic pictures and subsequent electrical zapping is involved. You want to eliminate some, but not all, of that? Do you think any of that is appropriate or healthy? Eliminate that nonsense and you don’t have much left. “Talk Therapy” isn’t what people find so problematic, here.

Oooh! Thanks for explaining. I didn’t know that.

As an aside can I just mention Courage is approved by the Church? 🙂

“Solid” may be a matter of opinion, but here is the evidence:

I have never seen any study that said otherwise, and I have looked, to see if my own perception is colored. This whole “closet” conjecture, is just that, conjecture. If the intent is to do what is best for minors, then conjecture has no place, unless what is intended is not what is best for minors, but what is best for a population that cannot reproduce on its own.

I would hope, now that we have gotten past the whole issue of gay marriage in a pluralistic society, that the LGTB community might throw a little tolerance back toward people of morals and stop this crazy recruitment of children, which is all I can see justifies unique and hypocritical approaches to underage sexuality.

I would be all for eliminating all aversion therapy, if that was on the table. Sounds good to me.

There’s actually quite a bit of psychological evidence that homosexuality is more of a psychological disorder rather than a biological one. This means that in theory psychological treatment such as therapy can be of great service to these people. It’s actually quite interesting!

When it comes to estimating the size of the LGBT population, there will never be any reliable numbers until there is no stigma attached to being gay or lesbian or transgender. Before then, many LGBT people will be reticent to reveal their sexual orientation on surveys or polls. Your belief that the numbers of LGBT people are growing is also nothing more than conjecture since there is only incomplete information available upon which to form an opinion. And our information on the size of the LGBT population twenty or thirty or forty years ago is even more incomplete since people were rarely asked about their sexual orientation in good scientific surveys then. Most estimates of the number of LGB people were based on Alfred Kinsey’s work from the 1950s which were even higher than current estimates.

Also, one of the links you posted refers to how many people “identify as LGBT” which is different from how many people actually have sex with others of the same sex since an undetermined number do so without identifying with the LGBT community.

reduce sexual attraction or sexual behaviour
This should certainly not apply to faith-based ministries.
Any serious christian-in-identity church has to talk about this issue.
This is part of christian chastity, for everyone, single or married. Inside the church, we must be talking about and encouraging chastity among everyone. We must stop singling out LGBT+ as the ones with the biggest sexual sins.

Pagans often believe the Church is only ‘against’ gay sexual sin.

Outside the church, we have nothing to tell others to do or not do (regarding their sexuality). It’s offensive to them because they don’t subscribe to the authority of the Church. We also appear often as mean spirited hypocrites, considering the giant log we have stuck in our own eye: divorce, remarriage, contraception, porn use…

My cousin’s daughtee wanted ONE boyish outfit in second grade. My counter-cultural cousin went whole hog, pushing this pink princess to be a trans boy in appearance and started posting garbage about her “trans kid” all over Facebook for years. Well, the girl is in high school now, grew her hair out, wears skirts all the time and is totally rebelling. She likes boys.

A former friend of mine, also desperate to be the dream liberal mom, pushed this ideation on her daughter in grade school that she had to “choose” her sexual identity and attraction. The daughter had her first best friends and had typical girl crushes on the friends which were not sexual. Pushed by Mom, the gir then joined the LGBT club, so all her friends were gender confused outcasts with all manner of personal problems… I heard all about it constantly…Emo stuff, suicide attempts by friends…chaos and darkness. After graduation the girl moved away and figured out she is straight.
You’re conflating sexual orientation with gender identity. If someone is transgender and transitions from female to male, their sexual orientation will remain the same since there’s no connection between sexual orientation and gender identity. Bruce Jenner was reportedly attracted to women and now as Kaitlyn Jenner is probably still attracted to women.

Also, someone doesn’t have to be LGBT to join an “LGBT club.” Most of those clubs are so called Gay Straight Alliance clubs (GSA clubs) and include both LGBT students and straight students who consider themselves allies. And most people who are gay, lesbian or bisexual don’t have any doubts about their gender and identify with the gender that corresponds to their biological sex at birth. So, I don’t know why gay, lesbian or bisexual members of a GSA club would be “gender confused.”

Definitions are written carefully and meticulously. It is absolutely not a coincidence that sexual behavior is included in the definition of conversation therapy. There is a reason for it.

So for all those optimists out there who are confident that the Canadian government is never going to be overzealous in its application and that this legislation only has noble intentions: best of luck to you and I hope you’re right.
