The more I hear Democrats talk, the more I think it would be a mortal sin to vote for them. It seems like everyone of their positions are against God and promote a secular, atheistic, moral relativistic socialism in which everything is a choice and up for grabs.

Well a grave sin subject to the other conditions for that - knowledge, consent. But yes, it’s evil to promote Democrats and it saddens me to see so many Obama or Hillary bumperstickers in the Church parking lot.

This is not your fathers or grandfathers Democrat party: it is aligned with pure unadulterated evil. I’m not saying the Republican Party is good or worthy. But just saying the democrat party as currently made up is unacceptable.

But we’re up against this idea that the democrat party is the party of the downtrodden, the little guy. Etc. And the seamless garment theology started by Bernardin has done more to let off pro abortion Catholics than anything else.

Depends on your definition of the word. The US Founding Fathers were radical progressives / liberals for their day. …and yes the Catholic Church at the time didn’t always think very highly of democracies / republics.

Here we go again…

Voting Democrat a mortal sin? Catholic Living
It just hit me. I voted Democrat last Congressional elections. My vote wasn’t pro choice; it was an vote against Trump. What just hit me is that voting Democrat May be a mortal sin because the Dems are notoriously pro choice. Even though my vote was an anti Trump vote; could my vote be a mortal sin?

Is voting Republican a mortal sin? Catholic Living
There is another thread on the Forum where one person questions whether it is a mortal sin to vote for a Democrat, because Democratic candidates for the most part favor the right of a women to choose whether or not she would want to have an abortion in the case of an unwanted pregnancy. My question here is, it is a moral sin to vote for Republicans who for the most part seem to against things that would help the average American, like better wages, affordable health care, lower taxes on the wor…

That book was written in 1886. St. Therese was only 13 years old and wasn’t even in Carmel yet. If Fr. Salvany were alive today, he would be absolutely stunned at the virulent version of liberalism, 2019. Probably would have to write volumes 2,3,4,5 and 6…that is if he didn’t suffer cardiac arrest just contemplating the evil of it.

Opposing slavery was a liberal position in the mid-19th century. Was Father pro-slavery? He may have been. I don’t know.
Supporting the Revolution was a liberal position in the 18th century.
Legalizing Christianity was a liberal position in the 4th century.
This attempt to project an eternal struggle between “conservatives = good” and “liberals = evil” back through history is just absurd.

I hope you condemn as a grave error modern democracy. It was a very liberal proposition not so long ago.

And here is the main problem of a two party system.
Unfortunately, a 3 or 5 party system is only marginally better.
I do like the Scandinavian systems. You get a whole bunch of different parties to choose from and many do get candidates elected. It seems like it’s possible to vote for someone not because they’re the lesser evil but rather you actually think they represent you.

Actually it is marginally worse. Imagine a candidate or government with only a 20 percent mandate to rule!

I don’t know- some countries with Democrats in power don’t really have the same ideals as the Democrats in the US.

If a member of any political party - or no party - is in accord with the Church on the contemporary 5 “non-negotiables” (abortion, euthanasia, same sex unions, fetal stem cell research, human cloning), then one may vote for that person unreservedly - all things being otherwise equal.

It is poor reasoning - relativism - to rationalize a candidate’s work on behalf of the poor as somehow compensating for the killing of the poorest of the poor: the unborn, or the helpless aged.

I am always disappointed when I hear or read anyone calling any Democratic politician (including the politicians themselves) “socialist”. As someone who is economically to the left of Sanders, no prominent politician in the US is a socialist in any meaningful sense of the word.

Also, any Marxist-related theory is opposed to relativism, since such theories rely on a moral and historical-narrative argument for their positions, and relativism is opposed to such narratives by definition.

I would also argue a case can be made that the Republicans are just as “against God” as the Democrats, just usually on different issues.

The more important question is: WHY are you voting for the particular candidate you are? Why are you able to “hold your nose” at certain immoral policies of this politician, but not the other?

Also, is it really justified to vote for an anti-abortion, anti-gay “marriage” candidate who also supports bombing innocent civilians overseas in an offensive war against a country that didn’t attack us, and who supports policies that gratuitously and actively harms the poor in favor of his or her donors?
