Is it a sin for Catholics to do Yoga?

Yoga uses body positions to worship the many different deities fusing one´s self to the many different deities in Hinduism.
What nonsense. One can’t fuse oneself to what does not exist now, can one?

Why not make up our own exercises and stretches that praise God.

most Yoga practiced in North America (for stretching, excercise, relaxation) is not. In fact it’s probably good for you. Some more traditional yoga with plenty of spiritual leanings could be…

Fallen angels exist; Scripture calls them Demons:

what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. -1Cor. 10:20.

For example, the goal of the classic Kundalini Yoga (that is so popular in the west) in Hinduism the goal is — through the concentration methods, breathing techniques, body poses, mantras, etc, — to awaken Shiva who in Hinduism dwells in the genital region. Shiva, one of the most important gods in Hinduism, rises up the column moving through and energizing the chakras. Those who advance hear for the zigzagging sound that slithers within like a snake through the chakras until it reaches the mind where Shiva finds its spouse Parvati where a sexual union is reached which then opens the “third eye” on a psychic level that brings forth powerful energies.

But the things which the heathens sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God. And I would not that you should be made partakers with devils. You cannot drink the chalice of the Lord, and the chalice of devils: you cannot be partakers of the table of the Lord, and of the table of devils. Do we provoke the Lord to Jealousy? -1 Cor. 10:20-21

Another Yoga thread?

Just one question: When does a stretch become yoga?
Any stretch one does has its counterpart in Yoga.
Does that make stretching itself sinful?

Yes, not only stretching but laying flat on your back is Yoga.
They call it “Shavasana”, I think.

There is an objective part to this and also the fact that one is working with a yoga instructor. I’m guessing this comes into play.

I believe the full lotus position is a mortal sin, the half-lotus venial, and the full lotus done upside down is unpardonable.

From the article:
Fr. Michael asked if I really believed that my intentions could strip the inherent meaning away from a thing. He made the analogy of going to Mass as a nonbeliever, mimicking the poses of genuflecting, making the sign of the cross, and perhaps even doing so out of a desire to mock the Mass. “Would it change what was happening on the altar? Isn’t there some spiritual reality taking place there, whether or not the nonbeliever admits to it?”

So what is the “inherent meaning” of laying flat on one’s back? Of standing straight up with your arms at your side or spread out? What is the inherent meaning of touching your toes? Doing a head stand or shoulder stand?

Inherent meaning is in the mind fo the the person and depends on context. At Mass this is especially true. We even have disagreements about validity when it comes to words, languages, and gestures.

When you practice yoga; breathing techniques, concentration, etc.

Yoga: leading affluent suburban white women to hell since 3,000 B.C.
depends on your subjective definition of yoga…the physical exercises will lead no one to hell, the spiritual dimension is, indeed, problematic for Catholics…and isn’t “affluent suburban white women” a bit judgmental and, racist?

Sometimes I see titles of threads like this and think, “Is it a sin to breath air?”
Only if, through your practice of breathing, you come to the conclusion that the act of breathing is a religious practice and it leads to salvation / enlightenment / whatever.

(That’s really what’s in play here.)
Centering Prayer for instance has roots in Buddhism but it’s very much part of modern Catholic spirituality
Except that Buddhist “centering prayer” and Catholic “centering prayer” are as different as night and day. 😉

🤣
Nobody who plays with a Ouija board intends to open themselves to demonic harassment
That’s kinda like saying “nobody who plays in the middle of a highway intends to open themselves to getting hit by a car”. And yet, that’s exactly the potential consequence of the action… “intended” or not.

Other than paranormal TV shows on cable stations making a big deal out of nothing, and scary second hand (at best) stories about the dangers of Ouija boards, I do not personally know of a single tween girl who as a result of playing with it at a pajama party ever had her head twist around like Linda Blair in the Exorcist.

Is that magic eight ball worrisome too?

LOL…perspective is everything!

I am trying to make sense of your reply, I have been unsuccessful so far.

Exactly. Good analogy

Official Church exorcists will tell you that playing Ouija boards is often the culprit to demonic manifestations later in life. Demons are not in time, thus someone playing with a Ouija board as a teenager are then clueless as to why they are suffering from psychological problems and hearing voices later in life when they are 30.
