Is it a sin to click a box saying that you have read the TOS if you haven't

I wish it said “I agree to be bound by these TOS” instead of “I have read the TOS” Who cares if we read them if we aren’t bound by them?

All that aside, you asked if it’s a sin. It does seem like lying IMO. 😦 I guess I’m guilty of it.

Would it be lying?
It’s neither a sin nor lying because I do it all the time!

But seriously, folks, it’s not lying since nobody is deceived into believing that anyone reads it except for a few neurotics. It’s simply a choice you make assuming the risk that there are hidden fees in the fine print that you’ll have to pay because you agreed to the TOS.

A beter question would be what makes lying a sin? Or what is the Church’s definition of a lie. Do two conflicting stories of Genesis make God a liar? Of course not! You have to understand the meaning of the term…

Nobody reads the TOS. Reading the TOS is simply a sign that you have too much time on your hands. Personally, I prefer to sit through all movie credits to see what type of film was used, only to be disappointed because often there is no credit given.

Just what does a “gaffer” do anyway?

A gaffer is responsible for the lighting, and reports to the director of photography. Which is a relief to me, because I had always thought that after reaching a certain age, I was a gaffer.

I’m shocked at how many here say it’s not lying. just because something is not face to face doesn’t mean it isn’t deceptive… For an example:

**I have read, and agree to abide by the Catholic Answers Forums rules.
**
You had to check that to get into this forum. If you didn’t read the rules how can you justify promising to abide by them?? Why do you think the rules were put there?

I used to work in the mortgage business. If everybody read every document that was placed in front of them at closing, no sale would ever get closed. And many of the documents they sign have statements certifying that they have read them.

I knew a lawyer who was also a real estate investor. He would just say, ‘all right, give me the docs’ and start signing everything without reading.

So it’s not a sin so long as everyone else does it that way and it’s an inconvenience to have to read them?

CAF has rules? Oh yeah, I did read them at some point. But that’s different. They are written in English and are somewhat brief.

Well, I wouldn’t call it a sin, unless it’s an attempt to defraud. I also worked for the government, and there are so many documents that require signatures that state: “I have read and understand the forgoing…” Believe me, nobody has read, and nobody understands. Some of the bureaucrats think they do, but that’s just because they haven’t studied it enough.

I believe he holds something for somebody:)

Seriously, (well, tongue in cheek maybe) whoever it is trying to get you to read all that claptrap is merely covering his own behind in case you complain about something. Then he can say, “You clicked the box!” Besides, you would need to pay your attorney $200. an hour to figure out what the “terms and conditions” actually said.😃

Actually, I have the answer!

The English word “lie” is not a good translation of the mortal sin we find in the 10 Commandments.

Exodus 20:16 says:
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
Since clicking the box pertaining to the TOS is anonymous, there is no way you are bearing false witness against ANYONE! By being anonymous you are in no way a “witness” to anything. The TOS box is simply legal gobbledy-gook that has no real bearing on a free, anonymous forum. It simply is put here as part of the software package that produces the boards which we all use.

isn’t it dangerous to sign things you haven’t at least glanced over or tried to understand? What if you accidentally make a Rumplestiltskin bargain or something? It would be worth a couple of extra minutes to avoid, don’t you think? Reading contracts might benefit you. It could help you decide what to get into. :twocents:

So if it’s not a sin to say you read them when you didn’t, Does that also mean it’s not a sin for me to include in them language in one that ensures everyone who says they read them owes me lots of money? Cause I could use some extra cash…😉

Like I said, because it is anonymous it has no legality. In order to “bear false witness” the witness must be known. If he is unknown, he is no “witness”, thus can not bear falsely.

I’d have to say yes. Probably not a very grave sin, but technically it’s still a sin.
