Is it acceptable for a priest to YELL and then HANG up??

Go to another parish; this kind of behavior is unacceptable, even less so from a priest. Yelling at Josh, telling him not to come to HIS church, and hanging up?! No way would I go to him for confession, nor for my marriage. There are lots of good priests out there, you don’t have to put up with this.
I cannot tell you how much your attitude bothers me. Tell me Kate, what is so special about you that makes you immune from Jesus’ admonition to forgive after you have been wronged? What mental gymnastics do you to exclude yourself from the obligation to forgive in this instance? I mean- you can’t even imagine the idea of forgiving someone for hanging up on you- so I can guess we can completely forget about forgiving anyone who really does anything wrong to you.

You must be a really special and important person.:rolleyes:

Would your fiance and you be more inclined to forgive your pastor for his unfortunate choice of words (“my church” instead of “the parish I shepherd”) and his abruptness, if you knew that he’d been up much of the night at the bedside of a dying parishioner, or that his own sibling is 1000 miles away and suffering and he, your pastor, can’t leave the parish to be a brother, or that 15 seconds before you called he found out the parish can’t make payroll or the overdue insurance payment that week and he has only a few hours to go begging, or that the parish secretary made a huge mistake affecting his ministry and he has five minutes to fix it so as not to hurt a group of people, or that he was suffering from gout or arthritis or hypoglycemia or depression or ulcers, or that his car won’t start and there’s a burial service in 15 minutes ten miles away and two other parishioners are pacing outside the rectory office demanding to talk with him today, or that he skipped lunch because of parishioners’ needs and now has a huge headache … ??? Easier to forgive, if you realize he struggles to be perfect and some days it’s just too hard?

So when you’re a mom and are harried or tired or overburdened, and you snap at a neighbor or friend or daughter or husband unreasonably, would you not want them to forgive you for being unreasonable or simply imperfect now and then, and would you hope they would not “peg” you as an ogre just because you were one for two minutes?

If you and your fiance can only forgive conditionally – that you’ll forgive only if there were extenuating circumstances – then I challenge the two of you to read and reflect on Jesus’ words about loving unconditionally …

And I challenge you and your boyfriend to “let go” of this picayune incident and NOT DEMAND that the priest make time out of his very busy schedule to meet with you, just so you can express your woundedness because he is sooo imperfect, just so you can feel better. It is simply impossible for a priest to “heal” individually with each and every parishioner demanding it. That is a selfish expectation on your part. Please reflect on the last time you were cold or disrespectful or impatient or indifferent (or whatever) to the cashiers in the supermarket. How’d you react if each cashier demanded that you make time for them so they can express their woundedness to you?

Yes – there was also a mistake made about not making the sponsor policy clear. Maybe the RCIA leader didn’t know – or wasn’t paying attention during a particular workshop – or perhaps she’s new and made some assumptions – or that Father made some assumptions she knew the policy. Guess what – people make mistakes. That’s life. The Church is a microcosm of the world – with all its imperfections, mistakes, weaknesses, sins, injustice, misunderstandings, confusion, woundedness, etc. We choose how to respond to the situations we confront – as Christians, we’re called to respond in charity – and we’re called to forgiveness when we don’t. Your pastor has probably already confessed his rudeness to his confessor.

And please stop nurturing the mentality in yourself and in your fiance that our faith is based on our feelings or on attractiveness of personality (priests’ or others’) or on whether or not you feel affirmed or “wronged.” Reflect on St. Paul’s letter to the Philippians – chapter 4:4-9 about looking for the good in your pastor and in others. Demanding a meeting with your pastor won’t bring you peace – and I suspect that’s not what you’re truly seeking. Do as St. Paul instructs – that will help you to know the peace of Christ.

Let go. And thank God your pastor said yes to his vocation, and be grateful to your pastor for the suffering he endures because of it. You don’t have to like him all the time. Just love him.

Soon Francis started to preach. (He was never a priest, though he was later ordained a deacon under his protest.) Francis was not a reformer; he preached about returning to God and obedience to the Church. Francis must have known about the decay in the Church, but he always showed the Church and its people his utmost respect. When someone told him of a priest living openly with a woman and asked him if that meant the Mass was polluted, Francis went to the priest, knelt before him, and kissed his hands – because those hands had held God.

The errant priest was converted through love. We should all strive for ongoing conversion throughout our entire lives.

I’m bashing priests? Rediculous, I have the highest admiration for priests and all religious. Like I said earlier, I posted because it was annonymous and I could tell the whole story without causing scandal, yet from everything I have said, you create scandal yourself.
You say I am bashing a priest? No, I pray for this priest and many others. I pray for an increase in vocations. I forgive this priest for acting wrongly against us, but does that mean I want to attend this parish where a priest feels that it is okay to act wrong, but that we should accept it because he is a busy, more important man.
 
This is precisely why in the old canon law, people were forbidden to marry their sponsors. (It was classified as “incest” since the sponsor takes on a parent-like role in the person’s life. In fact, another word for “sponsor” is “god mother” or “god father.”)

In practice of course you are more like an aunt or uncle to the person that you are sponsoring.
Yes, I understand the old canon law (i have looked all of this up haha!)… and maybe the priest could have explain it to us this way? Or said something out side of “my rules, my church.” we weren’t questioning his rules… we didn’t know if it was infact his “rules” or not… we had heard it by word of mouth. The whole reason for the phone call was to clear it all up. sigh

One can forgive, yes… but they don’t need to put up with this type of abuse.
I don’t believe that Kate was saying it was wrong to forgive… I believe she was saying that people don’t need to deal with being treated wrongly. >.> Correct me if I am wrong Kate.

UPDATE: Since this has happened, news has come out about him being under investigation… he has lost many parishoners… please keep him in your prayers.

Investigation for what? No wonder he was in a bad mood the other day.

The investigation has actually been going on since before Josh started RCIA there (we just recently found out about it). But the investigation has nothing to do with this thread… I just wanted to point out to those ridiculing me, that maybe my gut feeling was right…

So now this priest is guilty of something just because he is being investigated? And that proves your point all along?

Nonsense. An investigation can simply be the result of an inappropriate accusation, no?
 
Our Original Poster is being wronged. The victim is being seen as aggressor. How unfortunate.

Uhm… no, actually my point was proven a long time ago. No, I’m afraid this investigation is very valid. =\ But like I said, please keep him in your prayers.
 
I have been following this thread and have read the responses.

Should he have done that - probably not

Should you forgive him - absolutely

However, just because you should forgive him doesnt mean that your feelings on the situation aren’t valid.

I think people can be quick to either defend a priest or bash a priest no matter what the situation is. I like to take a bit more of a balanced approach. After all, if priests are human - as everyone says they are - then why shouldn’t we hold them to the same standards as our friends and family?

If I had an unresolved issue with a friend - and I did not understand why they hurt me like they did - I would want to seek clarity. I don’t see anything wrong with doing this - and I think you should. As long as it is done with humility and charity, as you would expect/want someone to approach you about something.

I wish you all the best - and I hope you can find peace in this situation.

You are bashing a priest. You may not say his name, but you are, in the bottom of your heart. You may say you are praying for him, but you are not forgiving. You are insulting the priesthood with your attitude. He is faulty, probably yes. Does he deserve you bashing him? NO. Jesus said:

*** "If your brother 12 sins (against you), go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother.

13 If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that ‘every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses.’

Got it? It is between Him and your boyfriend alone. He should not have told you to start with. But he is In RCIA, so he is STILL learning. On your case, you should know better. But we are all in a journey, so you can still pray for reconciliation and avoid hardening your heart.
 
The point of this thread is not to judge anyone’s motivations (which we cannot know) but to advise the OP as to what course would be best for her and her fiance to take in this situation. Please keep that in mind, everyone. Thank you.

Unfortunately we don’t know what the investigation is for, but I’ll bet that if it is revealed it will be something juicy.👍 .

It does seem odd though that the poster, who wasn’t even the person the Priest was allegedly rude to, now, suddenly and quite unexpectedly brings up that the Priest is under investigation for something.:hmmm:

I think it is pretty obvious what exactly is going on here.

You obvously are not in a close relationship, because if you are, you would know that all of my problems, are his, all of his problems, are mine. We talk to eachother, and help eachother through things. I attend the classes with him, and I attend church with him… I don’t see how you would expect him to not tell me about it.

I should know better? What should I know better?

All you can do is take my word in that I forgave the priest for treating us wrongly. I am able to attend mass where I feel comfortable, and will do that. I will not go somewhere where I am treated poorly, even if all is forgiven and put behind us.

I posted this thread the day after the phone call. Last night, I got a phone call from a parishoner. He said he and his family won’t be attending mass because of the investigation (but they might be getting a new priest!). My mom called the parish, and found it to be true. I don’t know details of the investigation, which is another reason why I dont want to post it. But yes, even though you’re being sarcastic, I bet it is juicy.
