I kind of agree. Out of non-Catholic translations, I prefer the NASB and the ESV—they are a bit more literal than the commonly used NIV and are more readable than archaic translations such as the KJV, ASV or even the DRB.

Oh,my friend, there is a whole lot more to think about when it concerns the JW’s. But, to stay on topic, it is NEVER o.k. to use the “New World Translation”. This is a distortion of truth and while it looks very much like a real bible it is an abomination. So, buyer beware. And make sure that any bible that gets into your childrens hands is not this version. In John1:1 it is very explicit that Jesus is not God. This scoops out the very core of Christianity. Any Jehovah’s Witness will claim that this is the most accurate translation from the original manuscripts. This is hogwash. It was originally the King James version that was re-written for their twisted doctrinal postitions and has been changed numerous times as their unidentified translators kept finding things that they previously missed concerning the divinity of Christ. God bless…teachccdI have a KJV version of the Key Word Bible that has the Greek and Hebrew references in the back to many Key words. It is cool, despite being without the Deutero Canon.I, too, have many Bibles. Even the KJV apocrypha.
The ones I would avoid are the “dynamic equivalent” versions. They are not translations, but paraphrases of translations. That allows for a lot of twisting.
I agree with what jfallaw said about the NIV. It tends to avoid using words that might back up Catholic doctrine. Plus the notes are all one-sided, as if Catholicism doesn’t even exist.
I use the RSV-CE, because it is also an approved Protestant translation. The CE includes the Deuterocanonical books.
I’m also blessed to have software that breaks both the KJV and the NASB down, inserting Strong’s numbers, so that I can look at the original Greek or Hebrew word. It’s great for studying, and debating on the internet, but my desktop is a bit unwieldy to carry around with me for those parking lot discussions…
I hope to get software for a Hebrew and Greek interlinear soon! Then I can really pretend to be a scholar!

I love my DRB. I even like the way it smells. It smells like a church building and has very beautiful text. It’s a work of art, very similar to the King James. I collect Bibles translations, and love to compare and contrast them.
I have a copy of the Complete Jewish Bible, a Messianic Jewish Bible that retains the proper Hebrew names and terms. I also have a New Testament comentary that goes with it.
I have a copy of the Jewish Publication Society’s OT Bible.
I also have a copy of both the RCC catechism and the Lutheran one.
I am starting to collect different translations and could use some clarification. I have a KJV 1611 1st edition digital repro. that contains 80 books. My Catholic DRB (my favorite as well) has the typical 73. I realize that a few books were broken out from Daniel due to the fact that they were greek texts. However, even with that, I can’t get up to 80 books. Can you help me reconcile this?Right.
