Is it moral for Catholics to own a bar?

Marijuana is a very harmful addicting drug that does more harm than “good” and one should not promote the use of it.

Couldn’t the same be said for alcohol? I think one could actually make a case on alcohol being more harmful than marijuana. I’m not an advocate for marijuana, but what would the difference be between alcohol and marijuana?

Alcohol is not harmful if only taken at little bits, but marijuana is harmful at little bits, and very addicting!
I don’t know the ins and outs of the whole matter though.

I think its been pretty objectively and conclusively show that booze is worse for you.

It really depends on the quantity. Booze is more harmful at higher quantities, and grass is more harmful at low doses.

I do think a lot of people think that. But I genuinely don’t see the harm.

Had a buddy who took a higher profile media job in Chicago. Ultra achiever. He STAYED high.

It really depends. After a couple of beers, you are probably actually more impaired than you may realize (alcohol blurs your ability to correctly gauge your level of impairment). You may be more aware of the effects of the marijuana after a few hits, but your actual ability to function safely (like drive or operate machinery) might be more hampered by even a couple of drinks. Also, alcohol tends to make a person more reckless, while for many, marijuana makes people more cautious. It really is an apples to oranges comparison.

Alcohol is probably more damaging both in the long and short term, unless you are a very responsible drinker. But booze is incredibly dangerous if abused.

Go ahead and open a bar if you like.

But please don’t put one of those cologne dispensers in the restrooms.

Too cheesy.

I don’t think it is laudable to own a bar, but since the Church has defined that drinking in moderation is not sinful,
Whew. The Apostles won’t get excommunicated over the Last Supper, nor will He have his Messiahship revoked. We can even keep Proverbs in the OT . . .

🤣

Years ago, I was at first scandalized when a priest spoke about the Agony in the Garden and the Apostles falling asleep. “They’d all had about five cups,” he pointed out. On reflection, given the type of celebration, that was probably correct.

Would you mind giving a reason? I’m just curious.
Production, Possession, distribution, and use of marijuana is illegal under federal law everywhere in the United States of America.

Opening a Marijuana Dispensary is an illegal business. Therefore it is immoral for Catholics to own a Marijuana Dispensary. It is an illegal venture.

Also, it is immoral for a Catholic to use marijuana in the USA. It is against the law. Every time a Catholic uses pot, they are committing a sin.

So until the USA changes federal law, everyone using cannabis is sinning.

Its really a legal question as to whether state or federal law takes precedence here. It hasn’t been adjudicated yet.

When booze was outlawed back in 1919 nationwide, it was a constitutional amendment. Those folks didn’t think the federal government had that authority

Federal law trumps state law. Just because the Justice Department is not prosecuting it does not make it right.

Federal law trumps state law.
Sometimes, but sometimes not.

There is a point of disagreement here - not with me, but with different attorney generals and states and the DOJ in Washington. I’m not a constitutional lawyer, the only thing I can recognize is that this is a matter of legal contention.

You are right that there are exceptions. However, the general principle is that when you have both federal and state laws covering the same action, federal law trumps state law.

It really is irrelevant what a state’s Attorney General thinks about the matter.

The question posed is whether it is moral for a Catholic to own a Marijuana Dispensary. The answer is no. As a general rule, in the USA, production, possession, distribution, and consumption of cannabis is illegal under federal law.

God doesn’t deal with legal technicalities. The same goes for smoking pot. If you are doing it you are knowingly breaking the law, funding an illegal enterprise and presenting a poor example of Catholic morality to the outside world.

Non Catholics call Catholics hypocrites. Smoking post reinforces the stereotype.

Instead of smoking marijuana with the adverse health consequences, take the pills … (but without the smoke).

Constitutional federal law trumps state law.

Given the manner in which states have set up marijuana trade controlled so as not to cross borders, the authority of the feds to regulate as “interstate commerce” is questionable at best. If I were handicapping, I’d give a slight edge to the states if it goes to the USSC.

The federal government simply doesn’t have general authority to pass laws.

Sneezing triggers interstate commerce. It takes planning to keep anything from becoming interstate commerce.

I live in border town that is planning to open six dispensaries in July based on the changing law. It will take exactly 45 seconds before someone from the north is buying pot and driving home to smoke it.

It will take 10 minutes before a dealer is sending people down to buy it for him to distribute in the North.

Considering a slight wind gust triggers interstate commerce, good luck.

As a lawyer you should know that.

Hello, this is my first time posting on CAF. I was wondering if it would be considered immoral if a Catholic were to own places that can cause others to sin, such as a bar or a marijuana dispensary?

Also, if this is in the wrong category please feel free to move it.
It isn’t intrinsically immoral to own a bar and have customers.

I don’t think bars are prudent for holiness because unlike family get together and special events, weddings, etc., the consumption of alcohol in bars isn’t always (and often isn’t) organically connected with social bonding, and the social bonds formed in bars are often sought out of use. So that isn’t something I personally desire to be part of my legacy/imprint on the world during my brief life.

Is underage drinking immoral? While ‘illegal’ (in the US), not sure it’s a sin, per se.
