Is it moral for Catholics to own a bar?

Is underage drinking immoral? While ‘illegal’ (in the US), not sure it’s a sin, per se.
I’ve heard varying opinions on this (from priests). We are to follow the just laws of our country. But is this law just? I’ve heard some argue it isn’t just because an 18 year old is old enough to serve and die for his country but not old enough to have a glass of wine with dinner. Something seems wrong with that picture.

For me, I would choose to follow the law. Not drinking alcohol isn’t something I ever felt put out by, so I saw no compelling reason not to follow the law. I didn’t have my first drink until I was 25, though, so maybe I’m just abnormal. 😝

Breaking a just law is a sin.

You’d have to get up pretty early in the morning to fashion an argument that the drinking age is an unjust law.

Hello, this is my first time posting on CAF. I was wondering if it would be considered immoral if a Catholic were to own places that can cause others to sin, such as a bar or a marijuana dispensary?

Also, if this is in the wrong category please feel free to move it.
Let’s look at this logically.

If it was immoral for a Catholic to own a bar, then it would be immoral for a priest to go to a bar. Catholics often have events called Theology on Tap, which takes place at a bar.

So if it would be immoral to own a bar, it would be immoral to enter one.

NOTE: now just because owning a bar is morally neutral doesn’t mean that it would be ok for owners to allow or promote anything to happen in their establishment.

I hope this helps.

God Bless

They already do that. That stretch of road is affectionately known by police as the “Heroin Highway.”

Even normal law abiding people in the area know to drive that stretch of highway 1 mph below the speed limit and to check things like your brake lights.

Well, it’s not illegal to drink per se. Honestly, I think the military age should go back up to 21. Or at least 21 for combat.

Until FDR lowered the draft to 18 during World War II, it used to be 21.

Breaking a just law is a sin? That feels pretty scrupulous… Speeding? Jaywalking? Not wearing a seatbelt? Using your cell phone in customs/immigration?

While all are ill-advised, I disagree that they rise to the level of ‘sin’ merely because they are illegal.

Is it immoral for a Catholic to own a bar? Have you ever been to Hoboken?

As a lawyer you should know that.
Actually, as a lawyer, I’m quite aware of how flawed your premises are 🙂

The pendulum swung to absolute federal power during the New Deal with the “grain cases”, which held that by not buying grain* on the interstate markets, a farmer growing alone was having an effect on those markets (the feds were literally telling every last farmer in the country how much grain he could grow to feed livestock). This interpretation effectively reduced the rest of the Constitution to mere ideas for Congress if it happened to get bored.

And for the who paid attention, the pendulum has swung back at the USSC, which voted that “robbery is an inherently intrastate transaction” in striking down federal law.

It is still permitting far more than the clause actually grants, but the “well, just because” days are over.

Unless something has overruled _Gonzalez v. Reich, ___
the overreach of the Justice Department under Obama and Holder will be corrected under Jeff Sessions and return to normal enforcement of federal laws.

Well just because. 😉

How Do You Know If You’ve Walked Into A Catholic Bar?

Simple, wait for everyone to start drinking and watch as they begin Confessing
😉

I think reading the book,Drinking with the Saints: The sinners guide to a Holy Happy Hour by Michael P. Foley answers the question best.
The Catholic litugical calendar is celebrated .
Raise your spirits and Toast the Saints
