… He shot his dog before killing himself as he thought his dog could talk and would tell the Allies all his secrets. Why are you posting about Hitler and the Nazis? What has this to do with the morality of hunting?
Hitler, his wife Eva Braun & his dog Blondi committed suicide-Blondi’s death by Prussic pills could be viewed by Hitler as doing what he can to save his family from falling into enemies as the Red Army was going to take Berlin. German sometimes committed familial suicide as the Red Army was taking Germany to avoid becoming Soviet casualties just some Japanese families committed suicides in Okinawa as we took over their Islands. Hitler’s deed of committing suicide with Eva Braun & Blondi reflected that of several thousand Germans who committed suicide in Berlin with their family pets.

Yes, Hitler was into health fads. Already said that Hitler was a meat eater for most of his life but @ various times he called himself a vegetarian. Hitler sometimes got hostile treatment from his cooks who would try to sneak in meat given that Germans are big meat eaters. The reason Hitler & the Nazis come into this is the fact that the Nazis did pass hunting laws which were advanced for it’s time & the Germans were advanced when it came to veterinary science. In fact the Germans were advanced in many ways during the Nazi period be it cars (Volkswagen Beetle 1938), steel (Kruppe steel) & yes veterinary science which incl. hunting laws & the fastest way to kill shellfish. Hitler signed laws on the fastest way to kill crustaceans & Air Force Reichmarshal Hermann Goering who was a hunter, advised Hitler on humane hunting. That’s how the Nazis are related to the hunting topic-not to glorify the Nazis, but to point out the fact that for it’s time, the Germans were advanced in many ways, incl. hunting laws.

Nor does protection of live young.

Lots of animals eat their own young, and don’t seem to mourn about that. Hogs, in particular, one of the most intelligent of animals, will do it. Dogs will. Cats will.

I have been around animals all my life and while they sometimes don’t know if an offspring is dead right away, they totally ignore it once they realize it.
Cats eating their dead young can be seen as a form of funeral. Animals may not always realize their young is dead, but they do what they can to revive. On PBS, they showed a giraffe trying to defend her young from hungry lions. She was kicking the lions but in the process, she trampled her young. She tried to revive, but once she realised that she had accidentally killed her calf, she gave it to the lions to eat because she figured it’s dead. Maybe she didn’t mourn, but if you’re going to say that she doesn’t feel sad about losing her young, then you’re wrong. Also buffalos have been observed to not always allow a dead young to be immediately eaten by a predator. Many animals have their own way of mourning & though it’s not as complicated as the way people do it, they do do so. If you give a dog’s puppies away, some dogs will howl for days because their puppies are gone. Dogs do have feelings of sadness & happiness.

I have given my other answer on this thread already.

But I wanted to note that I happened to see on the “Tigers and Lions Forum” this:

Q: “Is it moral to hunt man?”

A: “Depends entirely on taste.”

Cattle will sometimes also adopt the young of another, but that proves nothing about animals’ capacity for mourning.

We had a cow once who searched frantically for her calf for a few days. That was odd and totally not the norm. Usually it would take a couple of hours, at the most, before they were right back to normal. And you CAN tell when an animal is upset, especially when you spend so much time with them. We could always tell if they were sick, scared, happy, etc… It’s not that hard… and I can tell you, they didn’t dwell on the death of their young at all.

On PBS, they did a show on Canberra’s growing kangaroo population & the fact that hunting has been done to try to cull the kangaroos. The natural predators of kangaroos which are dingos are low in # & other than dogs, the kangaroos don’t have many natural predators. My guess is that other predators of kangaroos would be birds of prey (esp. after Joeys which are baby kangaroos), monitor lizards, snakes, Tasmanian Devils & larger cats (not like Sylvester & the Kangaroo in Looney Tunes). Kangaroos like other animals have mate fights & males can have their own harems. Pregnancy lasts 36 days & baby kangaroos (Joeys) spend 9 months in the mom’s pouch.

Australia with it’s high kangaroo population has had problems with kangaroos getting killed by cars (most likely to happen during the early morning or night when visibility’s bad), starvation & disease brought on by drought & cold winter weather. They’ve done hunting by shooting them to try to bring down kangaroo populations with the joeys killed by being beheaded or their skulls crushed. They’ve also used contraception in grass to try to bring down kangaroo populations & they’ve put some kangaroos in animal sanctuaries. Now they must avoid hunting kangaroos, but if it’s done this only as a last resort with conditions. They must not be allowed to kill joeys. If kangaroos are hunted, then they must go after the old, sick & wounded kangaroos & kill them quickly by shooting-a swift humane death. They must use the kangaroos as food. If they want to use the hunted kangaroos as food for pets such as dog food & cat food, then that’s 1 thing. If people want to eat the kangaroos which are hunted, then @least it’s sustenance. But if it’s hunting the kangaroos but not using the meat, then that’s wrong.

Finally, I agree with Florida gaming in hunting pythons & monitor lizards released into the everglades to protect endangered species. People must not be allowed to keep a python or a monitor lizard as a pets. They’re not like dogs or cats. Monitor lizards & pythons must be left in their natural habitat or kept in zoos. People also must not be allowed to keep wild cats such as lions or tigers as pets-those too belong in the wild or in zoos. But what is worse is when people released pythons & monitor lizards into the Florida Everglades when they got too big-they should’ve given them to the zoo or Florida Gaming officials. Wild animals have no place being kept as pets. Incidentally, the Turkey Point Nuclear Powerplant in Florida has done a good job in working with wildlife officials in protecting the endangered American crocodile which proves that business can work with wildlife.
