Is it okay to listen to the radio?

Lord have mercy.

Doc, Kyrie, is this or is this not the same Jesus who went out and drank with his buddies at a wedding (and then produced more wine for them so they could keep happy hour going?)

The same Jesus who was accused of being a glutton and a drunkard, obviously because he enjoyed a good time? The same who ate and drank with prostitutes?

The same who was happy to play with children, even when they were being such pains that the dsciples wanted to get rid of them?

The same who told his disciples NOT to wear long gloomy faces even if they were fasting? The same who taught us to call God ‘Abba’ - Daddy?

Yes, I know there’s a fine line between familiarity bred by true love and true intimacy, and presumption and disrespect, but you sound like you never ever allow yourself the former for fear you’ll slip into the latter. Not only did Jesus exhibit both respect and deep and intimate familiarity in his relations with the Father, he taught US to do the same.

Lighten up!!!

the blessed sacrament has been transported since long before cars existed. But I think it would be much more proper for a priest to be transporting it, rather than a eucharistic minister.
If that were the case and given the reality of the situation and the number of communion deliveries that are made each month, the priests would not have time for anything else.

Look as far as I understand it, it was not the good Knight’s intention to listen to the radio rather he was trying to find an alternative route. No problem but you got distracted. It does not seem that that was his intention. Now if you listened to the Redskins playing football on the radio that might be a sin given the way they are playing this year or at least it would be tempting to lead you into various sins such as swearing, vulgarities and cursing.

I don’t need another buddy. I have enough buddies. I need a Savior.

Doc, it’s not about being a buddy. My parents and grandparents aren’t my buddies. I respect them greatly and am often in awe of them. At the same time I can and do have a relaxed, intimate and familiar relationship with them. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.

Jesus said ‘I know my sheep and mine know me’. If you are never in anything other than fear and awe mode around Jesus then I don’t see how it’s possible to be open to truly knowing him.

The priest IS the “eucharistic minister.” Presumably you mean “extraordinary minister of Holy Communion,” which is not the same thing.

I’m a EMHC and after mass I bring Communion to the homebound. I normally drive and either pray the rosary or reflect on the homily that I just heard until I have distributed all of the hosts. Today I got stuck in an unxpected traffic jam and turned on the radio to see if I could hear of any news and/or how far it backed up so that I could decide whether or not to take an alternative route or continue where I was.

As I was flipping through the stations, I heard a song that I liked and began listening to it – briefly forgetting that I had the Eucharist with me. Was that wrong?

Since I didn’t do it intentionally, I don’t think that it was a sin but now this raises another question: is it wrong to listen to radio while transporting the Eucharist?

To me, it doesn’t seem right but no one ever told me that it was wrong either. Which is why I am asking the question to get other insight into this.
Instruction on the Eucharist: # 133 A Priest or Deacon, or an extraordinary minister who takes the Most Holy Eucharist when an ordained minister is absent or impeded in order to administer it as Communion for a sick person, should go insofar as possible directly from the place where the Sacrament is reserved to the sick person’s home, leaving aside and profane business so that any danger of profanation may be avoided and the greatest reverence for the Body of Christ may be ensured. Furthermore the Rite for Roman Ritual, is always to be used. Also see on line: Roman Ritual, Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharist Outside Mass, nos. 26-78.

To prevent the danger of profanation I would leave the radio off; IMHO. God Bless

How about Christian radio? Music that is centered on Christ and salvation and relationship with Him?

I think that my mind would want to stay in a mode of communication with Christ and some things that come across the regular radio sure could put a damper on that! I’ve noticed lately that a lot of stuff I used to listen to I can’t anymore because I really notice offensive lerics and language now that I never payed attention to before.

Just be mindful of anything that is offensive to the Spirit of Christ. And ask Him to help you be mindful of these things. Believe me, He will!

The wife and I play the Rosary on CD or CD Christian music and prayers. We find that the commercials on the radio are sometimes more offensive then the music. Birth Control commercials, topless bars, etc.

It’s amazing how much offensive stuff is being thrown at us all the time over the secular media; whether radio, tv, movies, newspapers, magazines… it’s just really hard to get away from it. And just when you think you’ve “turned it all off”, then you have the nasty billboards and bus signs all over the place. It’s really ridiculous, you’re assaulted everywhere you turn.

What does the Bible say, “as it was in the days of Noah” and “as it was in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah”. Boy, I can’t see how it can get much worse, I think we’re there!

I wonder what most priests do when they are going on a sick call and have the Sacrament along.

And also consider the big JC is riding with you. Wow, that is so cool! I would talk to Him.
Please don’t refer to Our Lord in this way. It is offensive to me. You are right, though, in that when anyone has the privelege of bringing the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ to the sick, and the Host in is a pyx in your car (hopefully in a pocket close to your heart), what a wonderful opportunity to talk with Him. Many of us are surrounded by noise and music all day long, and having a silent moment with Jesus for half an hour can be a real blessing. If one finds himself addicted to “background music,” the experience of turning off the stereo and simply being silent with the Lord can be a real help in one’s spiritual life.

I like to listen to Rush Limbaugh and Lars Larsen, but nothing they have to say can be more important that what Jesus can say, and unlike talk radio hosts, Jesus is actually present with you. Don’t let anything make you forget He’s there.

Hon, you did nothing wrong. Listen to the radio if you want. Until the EDIT find (and they might) find a canon law that forbids it, I say “Crank it Up”. God wants us to have joy in our lives. And transporting Him to others is a joyous ministry indeed.

Keep up the good work, kiddo…the sack cloth and ashes days are long over. This is the day the Lord has made…rejoice and be glad.

How… charitable of you

Its not about Canon Law, its about the respect and reverence one should show while carrying the Seccond person of the Holy Trinity, Our Lord and Our King, with them.
