Like Protestantism if you have a strong faith, good understanding of your own, and practice, then it’s OK. When in doubt (as with all spiritual matters) talk about it with your priest/deacon. If you don’t have a priest/deacon friend, then you still have one more preparation step. In any case here are some practical caveats from a person in the same situation.
**1. Understand “being spooked”. **
Much of the stuff you will learn may creep you out. It’ll also point out many thing you didn’t realize before in your life. As such you will “spook” yourself with phenomena that didn’t and never will happen. This is similar to scrupulosity to any Catholic that had their first real taste of an Examinations of Conscious. They literally start thinking they are sinning all the time, just as you may see yourself constantly using occult principles, being demonically possessed or demonically tormented, when non of the above has occurred at all.
2. Complexity
In both fiction and real life they say magic/occultism does simplify or make things easier. It complicates it more. Currently you are in an “innocent” condition about occultism. You just know the little that cultural osmosis gives you. Occultism is a lot like Protestantism, it’s a gigantic hodgepodge of whatever the person decide to write, practice, and select. It’s a lot to filter, and some things you just might not want to know.
**3. Obligation **
Just as a doctor must help all people in need so to will you be required to assist those in these circumstances. Do you have the heart, trust, tact, and skill to do so?
4. Too Much
Occultism like the Mystery of Evil attracts two types of ilk: those fascinated and repulsed by it. Surprisingly “too much” has a Christian side of the coin. You will get a lot of flake from fellow Christians about gateways. Either They are the type to read you off Marian promises superstitiously or they are true victims of Spiritual Warfare. Most of the latter which you see around the Internet, books, and other testimonials are the extreme cases. Not only were they involved in the occult, but often substance abuse, promiscuity, and non-life affirming lifestyles. Although they have recuperated they are still severely damage and like former alcoholics can never touch the stuff again in any way, shape or form.
