Is it true that praying the Rosary is worshiping Mary?

we are not required to go to

Jesus through Mary. We can go Jesus

alone.
Yes, I seem to recall you bring this up a lot.
I know we are not “required” to go to Jesus through Mary, or a saint, or anyone, but it is something we as Catholics are permitted to do, and even by some priests and bishops, encouraged to do through Mary.
I have heard many homilies in this past Fatima season where the priest spoke about how we go to Jesus through Mary, and there are many Catholics including myself who are very happy doing this although we know it is not required.
So please respect that some of us have a preference to go to Jesus through Mary from time to time.
I love Mary and it is very natural for me to access Jesus through one of his family…if He were my beloved relative, I might speak to His mother and say, “Could you please speak to your son for me,” or “Could you put me in touch with your son”, etc.

It is a bit difficult for me when fellow Catholics seem critical of approaching Jesus through Mary, when there is a great body of approved devotional work on the subject for those of us who choose to do that. If you do not so choose, then feel free to have your preference, but let others have theirs without constantly reminding them that we don’t HAVE to do that. If you feel it necessary to instruct someone else on the thread, please direct your comment to them, not to me, and leave me out.

You were in error when you typed we worshipped God along with Mary. That had to be corrected. We don’t worship Mary. She would say that herself.

As Jesus through Mary…

I bring it up a lot because the whole thing can get out of perspective and lead to error in Catholicism.
Today is the Feast Day of Our Lady of Sorrows. It’s all about the sorrow of Mary at the foot of the Cross. We had a lovely Mass. my Priest summed Mary up.

Mary represents the purity of the Church, the purity of us , the Body of the Church. Through saying yes to God, as the mother of Jesus, Mary is the author of life. Our life and salvation.

The threads about the special days Our Lady has had this past week, are very thin on the ground here on CAF.
  1. September 13
  2. Nativity of Mary
  3. Holy name of Mary
  4. Our Lady of Sorrows
Yes, We are permitted to practice approved private devotions. The Rosary being the principal private devotion. This year has been pretty special with the 100 year anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima.
Here is what I am critical of, and mainly because of what Our Lady said at Kibeho, Fatima , and Lourdes.

Our Lady said pray the Rosary for Penance of sinners, and salvation of those not yet repented. Pray the Rosary for reparation against sacrilege against Her and Jesus
Our Lady made it quite clear we can say a prayer to consecrate ( give ourselves to her safe keeping) to her. We don’t need a 33 or 30 day plan.

Jesus himself, through st Faustina asked us to pray a Chaplet of Mercy , and to pray to ask His mother, our spiritual mother, to intercede for us.
Jesus also gave us a very important prayer- the Lords Prayer.

We can pray to God directly, or we can ask Our Lady for her intercession. Or both.
So my criticism lies in the misunderstanding of Jesus through Mary, as the only way, the only option.
And yes the 30 day consecration really gets my goat when at Fatima, Mary requested a different thing.
I believe the last 2 points can confuse and put people off. And lead to misunderstandings.

You were in error when you typed we worshipped God along with Mary. That had to be corrected. We don’t worship Mary. She would say that herself.
My actual quote was as follows (cut and pasted):

“We worship God THROUGH Mary…“to Jesus through Mary”. She does not want us to worship her. She worships God along with us.”

Mary undoubtedly worships God with Us. I did not say we worship God and Mary. “Along with” in this context first of all refers to Mary’s own worship of God, along with us worshipping God, and secondly it doesn’t imply in any way that I said we worship Mary and God both.
I also stated that she doesn’t want us to worship her, which is pretty much the exact same thing you said.
I think you either misread, misunderstood or made some giant assumption as I am not getting how you somehow read my post as saying we worshipped Mary, but I have not said that, have never said that, and have never worshipped Mary. so this should be clear. I take issue with your insisting that I made an error that had to be corrected, when the error seems to be in your own head. Good bye.

I see many people say that the Rosary is not about God because there are 10 Hail Mary but 1 Our Father.
Re: the topic,
to pray means to ask. It can mean something one does in worship, but prayer by itself, is merely asking.

The hail Mary prayer is right out of Luke’s Gospel.

Hail full of grace the Lord is with you” Those are the words of the Angel Gabriel. We add Mary because that’s who the angel is addressing, and since Angels are messengers, He is addressing Mary for how God sees her [Luke 1:28 RSVCE - And he came to her and said, “Hail, - Bible Gateway]

blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb” Those are the words of Elizabeth, Mary’s cousin, who at the time was pregnant with her son John, who would be called the baptizer. We add Jesus to the end of the sentence, because that is who is inside Mary, the fruit of her womb. [Luke 1:42 RSVCE - and she exclaimed with a loud cry, - Bible Gateway]

“Holy Mary, mother of God” Elizabeth saying to Mary “mother of my Lord” = mother of God considering who Jesus is. [Luke 1:42 RSVCE - and she exclaimed with a loud cry, - Bible Gateway]

Then comes our request, we ask Mary to

pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death AMEN

THAT is NOT worship… nor are we worshiping Mary. We honor her and recognize her for who she is, and her influence with her son

Some protestants say the 15 promises of the Virgin Mary for those who pray the Holy Rosary are not biblical. Please help me answer the questions. Thank you very much.
Now that you see that the Hail Mary prayer is biblical, almost verbatim, and is not worshiping Mary, do you have another question?

As an aside, if repetition is your concern, particularly as it pertains to “vain”

Repetition is not prohibited in scripture. “Vain” is what “heathens” do, because they pray to false gods. That is the problem when it comes to repetition by them. They pray to no one. It doesn’t matter how many words they multiply. Their prayers are empty, void, ineffectual, fruitless, profane, and thus even one prayer from them is VAIN.

Repetitious prayers by those of faith, are not vain NOR prohibited by scripture. Ever read Psalm 136? The response

“His love endures forever” is repeated 26 times.

“for his steadfast love endures for ever.” Repeated 26 times

No, it is not worshipping Mary. Praying the Rosary honors & venerates Mary. We worship only God. We honor & venerate Mary for her Fiat of saying yes to become the vessel of the Incarnation.

No not true. All people who think we worship Mary have to do is pick up a book.
“Blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus.” Holy Mary “Mother of God”

Mary is the mother of God, pure and simple. Protestants get all upset because we want to honor his Mother, again the Mother of God, the Mother of the Savior. This to me is disrespectful not only to our Lord’s mother, who most certainly deserves our love and respect, but to our Lord himself. I am quite sure our Lord is not pleased at all with this attitude. Tell them that please.

And, we honor Mary because God honored her first! We are supposed to be perfect, as God is perfect, and God honored Mary. Christ created Mary to be His mother - no other son has ever done that. No one else could ever do that. No other mother has ever conceived supernaturally.

As someone said, we honor Mary as the Mother of God - worshipping God along with her, while we honor her similarly to how we hon
Thats what you wrote. it had to be picked up. was it a typo? regardless, it really had to be picked up.

Sometimes people miss the difference between dulia (honoring saints), hyperdulia (veneration of The Blessed Virgin Mary), and latria (adoration of God).

Hyperdulia (Byzantine Catholic):
It is truly proper to glorify you, Ο Theotokos,
the ever-blessed, immaculate, and the mother of our God.
More honorable than the cherubim,
and beyond compare more glorious than the seraphim;
who, a virgin, gave birth to God the Word,
you, truly the Theotokos, we magnify.

What are we supposed to be contemplating when we say the rosary?

The Annunciation. (Jesus is conceived.) The Visitation. (St John the Baptist is happy to sense Jesus.) The Nativity. (Jesus is born.) The Presentation. (Jesus is presented in the temple.) The Finding in the Temple. (Jesus tries to get working on his Father’s work.) The Baptism of the Lord. (Jesus is baptized.) The Wedding at Cana. (Jesus’ first public miracle.) The Proclamation of the Kingdom. (Jesus preaches.) The Transfiguration. (Jesus gives a glimpse of his divinity.) The Institution of the Eucharist. (Jesus’ Last Supper.) Jesus Prays in the Garden. Jesus is Scourged at the Pillar. Jesus is Crowned with Thorns. Jesus Carries his Cross. Jesus Dies on the Cross. Jesus Rises from the Dead. Jesus Ascends to Heaven. The Holy Spirit Descends, because Jesus promised that would happen.

And then you have Mary is Assumed into Heaven (and gets to be with Jesus again) and Mary is Crowned Queen of Heaven (because the mother of the king is the queen, and Jesus is the King.) So even those last two mysteries only have any meaning because of Jesus.

So the rosary is very profoundly about Jesus. Because what’s Mary’s role? To lead people to Jesus…

There are really three levels of prayer, vocal, meditative, contemplative. They all have value and merit.

Not even close. People who say that have no concept of her authentic and scriptural place in God’s plan.

We arent praying to be prophets, or prophetic.
We pray to speak with and become closer to God.
How did you get that from the three types of prayer? Or were you replying to another.

The meaning seems clear to me–we are worshipping God along with (or alongside, if that makes more sense) Mary, just like we’re worshipping God along with everyone we’re sitting with at Mass.

Each Hail Mary represented a psalm. The original Rosary had three sets of mysteries…joyful, sorrowful, and glorious. So 50 Hail Maries per mystery times 3 equalled 150. Care to guess what else there are 150 of? If you guessed psalms, then you are paying attention and can give yourself a pat on the head!

The rosary was developed to allow the common worker types (aka farmers, peasants, etc) to take part in the daily prayers of the monks. It was, and still is, honoring God.

The addition of the Luminous mysteries has muddied the waters, but maybe its time for some enterprising religious order to come up with 50 new psalms!

We worship God, we ask Mary to help present our petitions for help to God. Believe me when I say, IT WORKS!

We do NOT worship Mary.

We only worship God

Or do you mean,

Mary, along with us, and all the saints and angels. , we all worship God

Does the Catholic Church Idolize the Virgin Mary in the Rosary? First, review Luke 1:26-56 (I use the King James Bible when I talk to non-Catholic Christians so as not to cause confusion when they look up verse because many times that is the Bible they will use.)

Now the Hail Mary
Hail Mary full of Grace the Lord is with thee (This line is covered in verse 28 and 30)
28And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
30And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

Blessed of thou amongst woman and bless is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus
This line is explained in verse 42
42And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

Holy Mary mother of God is explained in verse 35
35And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of death. Many people will say the Bible has never shown that the Virgin Mary prayed for a sinner at the time of their death. However, you should review (John 19:25-42).

(Verse 25 established that the Jesus Mother Mary was at the Cross upon his death Verse 32 show that Mary saw the two sinner legs broken and is it so hard to believe that a person would say prayer at this moment.
25Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
32Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.

So we Catholic include ourselves since we all are sinners asking the Virgin Mary to Pray for us now and at the hour of our death.

Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of death.
Amen

The Hail Mary prayer can be back up by scripture so we do not idolize her in the prayer.
