Utah, South Dakota, Oklahoma are good places too…as are the Bakkan oil fields of North Dakota.

:gopray2: for you to find a new job in a place you like.
I wouldn’t move to Oklahoma if crime is a concern. Meth is a HUGE problem there and property crimes are very common. The police are some of the laziest I’ve ever encountered.

We had a trailer loaded with equipment stolen from a job site. I called several scrap yards and found one that had received the equipment - they had a copy of the guy’s drivers license, a picture of his vehicle, his tag number and the tag number for our trailer. He sold the equipment for scrap (about $70,000 he sold for $600) and took the trailer home. When we called the Tulsa Police Dept and faxed them all the information (name of thief, copy of his DL, picture of his pickup, tag number and our trailer tag) they told us they were busy and would get to it in a couple weeks. 4 months later they “contacted” the guy. He claimed he didn’t know anything about it. Case closed. If I had known that was how they would have handled it I would have taken our trailer back before he sold it to someone.

What I find curious about the current gun wierdness going on is that it accentuates a peculiar and disturbing elitism among wealthy liberal politicians & show-biz chums who have thier bodyguards and thier personal CCWs, as well a cold-bloodedness among profiteering “Bubbas” who hoard guns and ammo to turn quick and obscene profits.

…like I said, saw off the barrel and stick it in a corner…
But no less than 18" (I’d recommend 18.5) legal minimum. Shorter than that it becomes an SBS under the NFA and requires a lot of paperwork from the ATF.

As to caliber for self-defense, a hit (or a number of hits) from a .22LR is better than a miss with a larger caliber. However, the FBI has established 12" of penetration in ballistic gellatin to be the minimum for a round to be considered acceptable for defensive purposes. This accounts for rounds having to pass through bone, clothing, or limbs to reach vital organs. You can search other sites for data on which rounds are capable of doing that.

For shotguns- buckshot larger than #4 meets this requirement. (4 can meet the requirement but not reliably). If recoil is a problem there are several companies making low-recoil rounds, typically with better flight control wads to keep a tighter pattern. Again, other gun related sites can provide you the information on specifics.

Of course, as others have mentioned finding the desired ammo in the current environment can be pretty tough. Find the HD ammo and hold it, train and practise with whatever you can find.

Mossberg 500 Home Defender pump shotgun.

Comes in .410 and 12 ga.

Short stock.

Looks evil; pump action sound is very distinctive and unmistakeable; easy for petite women to handle in the confines of a home hallway.

Should put the fear of the Lord into any home invader.

Check YouTube for comparative demonstrations.

The means to protect yourself have been made available to you, yet you choose to test God and not take prudent precautions.

Luke 22:38

Apparently the apostles were armed.
Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?” “Nothing,” they answered. He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. It is written: `And he was numbered with the transgressors’ ; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.” The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.” “That is enough,” he replied. (Luke 22:35-38, NIV)

Is it wrong to get into guns?
Depends.

If you mean “get into guns” as in you are interested in guns as a hobby, collector, or owner? Not at all.

If you mean “get into guns” as in you want to climb inside a cannon like an 1890s circus perfomer? Then, yes; very dangerous.

You can also buy an aftermarket recoil reducing stock with adjustable Length Of Pull (LOP).
DW has difficulty maneuvering anything longer that that.

But at very close range, don’t need anything bigger … or louder.

A sling might be nice.

Hopefully it will never get used. And if it does, hopefully only one time.

And every time I see the name of this post I think:
“no, it’s not wrong at all, but it might be a bit cramped inside that gun, you might want to find the biggest one you can…”
So sorry. 🙂

And in all seriousness, No, guns can be a great hobby. I love to go shooting with my friends. And I feel more comfortable at home knowing that I can protect myself in my home if I need to do so. And here in Az, concealed carry is legal for all. 🙂

There are friends who are “city people” … absorbing all the latest politically correct trends.

When they retired to a less expensive, less intense “country life” … to the horror of the wife, the husband became a really enthusiastic gun owner and goes shooting with new friends all the time … target shooting, skeet shooting, deer hunting …

There is a difference between hobbies and being the protector of your family. Target shooting with your gun is complimentary to keeping it for protection—it translates into developing and maintainting skill, confidence and safe handling. All good things—much better than keeping a loaded .38 in a night stand and forgetting about it.
What disturbs me is an unhealthy gun culture I see—spending too much money on accesories(the simlper the better if you ask me) high tech ammunition that would stop charging rhinos (and go through three nieghbors houses before being spent) and incessant trash talk about killing (sounds like bad Hollywood dialog)

The Apostle didn’t travel with weapon either they have faith in God.
Are we forgetting about Peter who carried a sword to the garden with Jesus? Jesus did not tell him to get rid of it and I don’t think he brought it to peel grapes.

Yes, “…go sell your cloak and buy a sword” was Jesus’ command. And in the OT “To everything there is a season”… a time for peace and a time for war."

Pray for the Wisdom to rightly use what weapons you have available to you.

Don’t fall into the trap of listening to firearms copywriters out to get your hard earned $$.

Guns are great for hunting…great for sport and great for knowing that you at least have more than even chance to protect yourself and your family if need be…I do own guns…unfortunately they have become a means to an end solution in this country…one of my daughters wants to buy herself an AR-15 assault rifle…her reasoning is that if more than one person breaks into her home she has a better chance of killing them first…and she isn’t the only one who thinks like that…look at the number of assault weapons that were sold after the children were massacred at Sandy Hook school…instead of being horrified at the slaughter of innocents…we run out and buy the very same type of weapon used to massacre them…and many of the buyers were women…mothers no doubt…now we’re arming teachers in schools…allowing college students to carry concealed weapons…people walking the streets with concealed weapons…if you want to try to quote Jesus infering that he was somehow in favor of weapons of that era…swords etc…then maybe you also wants to read where he said that those who live by the sword will die by the sword…also when he returns he is going to turn your swords into plowshares…nowhere in fact does he advocate violence as a solution…we pride ourselves as having the greatest democracy in the world and regard our constitution almost as sacred text…yet at the same time we have para-military groups all over this country armed to the teeth ready to fight the very governments that have sworn to uphold the constitution…and all with their own conspiracy theories…talk about being paranoid…we have way more gun related killings than all the other civilized nations of the world…combined…it’s like pharaoh when he hardened his heart against God…even after the ten plagues God sent on Egypt…maybe God is trying to tell us something after all the massacres and killings in this country lately…and how are we reacting…heardening our hearts by arming ourselves even more…maybe our nation is under the judgement of God even now…hope y’all have a blessed Easter

I take living by the sword as a metaphor for using deadly force to dominate others, but not for using a weapon to protect one’s family!
There is a difference. A huge difference.
St. Joseph protected the BVM and Jesus. Did he use a sword? We don’t know. Did he even need to? There were certainly angels more formidable than he for the task (if he wanted to tempt God perhaps that would be his thinking.)
But thats not what happened. St. Joseph’s protection of the Holy Family was neccesary and St. Joseph, in his humanity, would protect them.

It is Easter and that makes me reflect that it was a blessing that St. Joseph didn’t live to see the Passion of Jesus, nor the agony of the BVM. His life was totally dedicated to protecting and providing for his family. NOT being there to have to endure watching them suffer was a very generous blessing indeed.

I’ve had a lifetime of never owning a gun, and recently I’m getting into guns. I’ve watched videos on safety, doing research on what kind to get, proper handling, etc. I’m soon going to buy two guns - one for each of me and my wife. I do plan on getting more training and practice time in. I met a new friend who owns guns and he allowed me to try out some of his weapons (reimbursing him for ammo) - and it was fun to shoot the 22LR’s but the higher ones were too powerful for me to handle (so I’m looking for a 22LR at this point, maybe later on graduating to a 9mm)

Currently I’m living in a relatively safe neighborhood, but there are some people in the apartment building who have done things like stealing bikes, and other minor crimes.

I’m not a violent person, but when I tell my non-gun-owner family and friends about this, they’re acting like I’m going to buy a nuclear bomb or doing something bad. I got the sense that they think I’m some violent guy because I will own guns.

My prime motivation is to protect my family at home. Concealed Carry is illegal in Illinois but that may change. I do not think I will concealed carry, and not sure about my wife, but we are open to it. I am not a violent guy, I don’t go out and get into fistfights or other scuffles like that.

So, my question is: Is it wrong to get into guns? Am I some violent guy who is horrible?
Try trap shooting, usually the range has guns of different size and gauge to use. You may find a new hobby. My semi auto duck slayer doubles as a trap gun but as soon as it enters my home it’s fitted with an 18 inch barrel ready to great an intruder with nine .30 cal pellets. BTW, I’ve run into my parish priest at the range and my only sin is coveting his Browning Citori 725 Lightweight.

You shall not test GOD either, so throwing yourself into the traffic isn’t a great idea, Jesus was tempted also by the devil to throw himself down from a high place.

I am talking about having faith in God and trusting him fully. Yes tragedy can still happen but nothing can happen unless God will it. If he does, he knows the big picture and what is best for our soul.

If i would live in a place where everyone could own a gun, i would look into moving but this man is the one to decide and he cans read all of our post and make a decision.

In my childhood area, some people would hunt even off season, a poor man lost his life when he went picked wild strawberries, he was taken for bear.

Gun, kill, if i would have nothing to eat, no plant at all, i certainly would consider to hunt beside this, i am not keen on this. Never i would take a pleasure to kill an animal, i cannot comprehend this.

The Apostle didn’t travel with weapon either they have faith in God.

Nothing good come from a gun, nothing.
I know many see them as a simple object or something to protect yourself and nothing wrong with it but i don’t. I don’t judge anyone for feeling this way but it would be nice that many would choose to trust God.

How many innocent people or even children has been killed accidentally. None of the owner did predict this but they have to live with this pain and sorrow for quite some time if not for ever.

Anyway, this is me but this person who posted will make the best decision for him and his family.

All the best!

p.s. Mother Teresa did her mission in a very dangerous place and she didn’t have any weapon but her prayer, crucifix and faith.
Again, your are mixing your arguments. You are pointing out the danger of guns, which has NOTHING to do with saying you should forgo man-made conventions and trust God completely.

If the latter is the case, you could give up locking your doors, using seatbelts, and push to disband the military. Somehow, I believe God gave us the ability to use the gifts he gave us to care for ourselves.

If you want to argue that guns are simply too dangerous for anyone to own, so be it, but that has nothing to do with God’s providence protecting you. Even Mary wrapped Jesus in swaddling clothes to protect Him as a baby, Why didn’t simply lay him outside with Melchior and say “no worries, God will protect Him.”

Please kindly read my other posts, perhaps you will understand better what i meant. You will see that i am not necessary arguing with you concerning protection. I am all about protection but not limited with gun. This last reply, was in response to someone else.

I am not into starting a debate about a gun but i did make suggestion to truly seek in your heart, if this is a necessity to own one.

If i would live in a dangerous place such a jungle full of wild animals or surround with bandit, yes, i would consider to find a way to protect my family beside prayer but before this, i would simply move if possible. Did you know that the Pope always pray before making any decision, perhaps, it would be a good practice for us too, to do before making a major decision. “Thy will be done”

I think when someone is fascinated by something or have a lot of attachment, they will read what they want or tell themselves stories to justify their choices.

I cannot judge any one wanted to own a gun and it is truly up to the person. But it would be wise to pray first. The original person posted a question and i made a suggestion that he could had considered but he seems to be aim to own one. So i don’t understand why my post make others uncomfortable and feel the need to convince me to accept their view. Unless, what i wrote can reach some truth in their heart.

I am not against wisdom, safety and prevention. I respect the person in charge of a family to make the appropriate choice to protect their family. Keeping the door lock might be enough for them, others has a sort of a pack with neighbors. Is owning a gun a necessity? Most the time not AT ALL but It is up to the person in charge of the family to decide what is best for their family. We have been asked our opinion and i expressed mine as others did. I

I know one thing, when we reason as human we get result and consequence from our human perspective, but if we let God be in charge of our life, we can avoid the negative consequence and we will experience what is best for us.

Mother Teresa weapon beside prayer and her faith in God, was her cross on her shoulder. Communist understood the power of it and didn’t allow people to have it. They took down crosses on top of church. The same day that Jean Paul II left Poland, the cross was removed. The communist wall in Europe was dismantle with the seed planted by the Pope who did God’s will. You should perhaps watch some day the 9 days of Jean Paul II in Poland.

The lady of Guadalupe tilma was bombed once, and was completely intact. In front was a crucifix.

nativevillage.org/International%20Council%20of%2013%20INDIGENOUS%20GR/Each%20GR%20Home%20Page/Julieta%20Casimiro/virgin_of_guadalupe_is_the_s.htm

I have seen a house that burned but the room that contain a crucifix were untouched and also the room that had a blessed palm were also untouched.

Anyway, we can reason from a human perspective and being limited or open up ourselves to the infinite protection of God with our faith. St-John was plunged into boiling oil and came out intact. It wasn’t his time and he was protected by God. If he wouldn’t have the faith in him, perhaps, it would have been a different story. **So this is why, i trust that someone knows their limitation and will do what is best for their family, but i certainly would pray first. **

All the best!
