IS LIBERALISM A SIN?

Liberalism is a Sin - online book

Liberalism is the root of heresy, the tree of evil in whose branches all the harpies of infidelity find ample shelter; it is today the evil of all evils. (Ch. 4). “The theater, literature, public and private morals are all saturated with obscenity and impurity. The result is inevitable; a corrupt generation necessarily begets a revolutionary generation. Liberalism is the program of naturalism. Free-thought begets free morals, or immorality. Restraint is thrown off and a free rein given to the passions. Whoever thinks what he pleases will do what he pleases. Liberalism in the intellectual order is license in the moral order. Disorder in the intellect begets disorder in the heart, and vice-versa. Thus does Liberalism propagate immorality, and immorality Liberalism.” (Ch. 26).

Liberalism “is, therefore, the radical and universal denial of all divine truth and Christian dogma, the primal type of all heresy, and the supreme rebellion against the authority of God and His Church. As with Lucifer, its maxim is, ‘I will not serve.’” (Ch. 3).

“Liberalism, whether in the doctrinal or practical order, is a sin. In the doctrinal order, it is heresy, and consequently a mortal sin against faith. In the practical order, it is a sin against the commandments of God and of the Church, for it virtually transgresses all commandments. To be more precise: in the doctrinal order, Liberalism strikes at the very foundations of faith; it is heresy radical and universal, because within it are comprehended all heresies. In the practical order it is a radical and universal infraction of the divine law, since it sanctions and authorizes all infractions of that law.” (Ch. 3).

Liberalism a sin? Thats a bit stupid. Conservatives are not necesserially correct, the view that they hold won the debate two millenia ago. There is nothing to say that conservatism would win the debate today.

If liberalism is a sin then clearly a number of high ranking clergy members are also guilty.

Liberalism does not necesserially mean that one disagrees entirely with church teaching.

Of course it is…Monsieur… (mister)

it might even be pagan as well.

I’ve never heard of this theory. I voted no. Really, I think this is probably quite insulting to liberals. I know some very fine, upstanding people who hold liberal views. I don’t like this concept at all!

I think it depends on how liberal you are. Liberal on some things may be ok. (say, economic issues or something.) Liberal on say, the subject of abortion = not ok = sin.

Just my little way of looking at it.

But then you are not French
Why ofcourse madomseille (sp?!? 🙂 ), my teachers did try relentlesly to teach me both german and spanish, but I have not the flair. 😛

P.S. I also see sense in what Celia is saying.

You know, just because some guy wrote a book about this doesn’t make it so. Just the same as if someone condemns conservatives with a broad stroke of the brush as exploiting the poor and wrecking the enviornment. It’s all very subjective. The ways of a man are always right in his own eyes, but only God can judge our hearts!

…The more theological and religious form of Liberal Catholicism had its predecessors in Jansenism and Josephinism; it aims at certain reforms in ecclesiastical doctrine and discipline in accordance with the anti-ecclesiastical liberal Protestant theory and atheistical “science and enlightenment” prevailing at the time. The newest phases of this Liberalism were condemned by Pius X as Modernism. In general it advocates latitude in interpreting dogma, oversight or disregard of the disciplinary and doctrinal decrees of the Roman Congregations, sympathy with the State even in its enactments against the liberty of the Church, in the action of her bishops, clergy, religious orders and congregations, and a disposition to regard as clericalism the efforts of the Church to protect the rights of the family and of individuals to the free exercise of religion. III. CONDEMNATION OF LIBERALISM BY THE CHURCH
Code:
By proclaiming man's absolute autonomy in the intellectual, moral and social order, Liberalism denies, at least practically, [God](http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/06608a.htm) and supernatural religion. If carried out logically, it leads even to a theoretical denial of [God](http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/06608a.htm), by putting deified mankind in place of [God](http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/06608a.htm). It has been censured in the condemnations of Rationalism and Naturalism. The most solemn condemnation of Naturalism and Rationalism was contained in the Constitution "De Fide" of the Vatican Council (1870); the most explicit and detailed condemnation, however, was administered to modern Liberalism by [Pius IX](http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12134b.htm) in the Encyclical "Quanta cura" of 8 December, 1864 and the attached Syllabus. [Pius X](http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12137a.htm) condemned it again in his allocution of 17 April, 1907, and in the Decree of the Congregation of the Inquisition of 3 July, 1907, in which the principal errors of [Modernism](http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/10415a.htm) were rejected and censured in sixty-five propositions...

The Gospel is a tough thing to live with.

I’m wondering. Have any of you that replied to or viewed this thread even view the link that bufalo provided? You should. Read the book called “Liberalism is a Sin.” Pope Pius XII stated that liberalism is a sin in his Syllabus of Errors.

He wasn’t just some guy–he was the bishop of Barcelona. And I think that his position was endorsed by a Pope or other bishops. My recollection on this is hazy at best, though I am sure we can do a little research.

Pope Pius XII stated that liberalism is a sin in his Syllabus of Errors.
In his encyclical on The Nature of True Liberty (Libertas Praestantissimum), Leo XIII makes the remarkable claim that liberalism is diabolic in its origins. “But many there are who follow in the footsteps of Lucifer, and adopt as their own his rebellious cry, I will not serve; and consequently substitute for true liberty what is sheer and most foolish license. Such, for instance, are the men belonging to that widely spread and powerful organization, who, usurping the name of liberty, style themselves liberals” (Libertas Praestantissimum, n.14). Although the Holy Father’s comparison may seem hyperbolic, nonetheless the principles of liberalism mirror the Devil’s original revolt…

I am of the opinion that an extreme of anything can become sinful.
