Is LifeSiteNews anti-Francis?

Pope Francis is not interested in culture wars. He thinks they get in the way of proclaiming the gospel - and I agree. What he wants is a church that reaches out and builds bridges to the disenfranchised. That means less emphasis on doctrinal purity and more emphasis on mercy and compassion. That’s what I want too.

This is not the agenda of the Christian right - both Catholic and Evangelical. The Christian right is so politically invested in the culture wars that they would endorse and support a candidate as flawed as Donald Trump, a man who wants to build walls and ban Muslims. The difference with Pope Francis could not be more stark.

It appears you forgot the rest of the sentence, here you go… "IS BUNK!

The article lost me when it made this point, which you also make: “eventual victory was aided by a majority of white Catholics and the support of some U.S. church leaders—this in spite of Trump’s Islamophobic remarks and advocacy for the deportation of undocumented immigrants, among other things.”

I guess there would have been no problem had Hillary won …aided by a majority of white Catholics and the support of some U.S. church leaders—this in spite of her advocacy of the idea that women have the right to pay doctors to kill their unborn children.

For me the problem is that the Pope appears to emphasize mercy at the expense of doctrinal purity.

The Church taught for 2000 years that "27Therefore whosoever shall eat this bread, or drink the chalice of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and of the blood of the Lord. . . .29For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh judgment to himself, not discerning the body of the Lord.

Mercy and doctrinal purity are not an either/or but a both/and situation. The truth will set us free, the truth is the way to mercy. Mercy without truth is not mercy at all, for it leads people to their perdition.

I read that article when it came out. Sounded like it had been written by people who learned about US politics from the same sources which give us such mixed-up versions of what the Pope said.

I gather from the name that the site was once involve primarily in pro-life issues, but it is clear that they have an ax to grind against the Catholic Church.

Every time that is quoted, I want to mention the context, as it is never quoted in context, and the part that says, “Therefore, let each examine himself,” seems to always be omitted. But the context gives even more information, as it is applied to those who show up and are selfish and inconsiderate to their fellow Christians.

Yes because the point I was making was that receiving the Eucharist unworthily can send a person to Hell for all eternity.

I have known enough nasty or criminal people who are at peace with their conscience: “it’s true I’m a burglar, but at least I didn’t vote for Trump!”

I see something interesting in this controversy… Those who question the Pope, say, the four Cardinals who wrote the Dubia, are saying: what you are saying seems to contradict a teaching of the Church. Could you please clarify? They say things like this confusing; we don’t understand, etc.

Those who vilify them-- and I use the word vilify intentionally-- do not answer any questions, do not try to clear up any questions, they just start talking about mercy as if only by allowing everyone to do pretty much anything they want except attend Latin Mass or vote for pro-life Trump over pro-abortion Hillary are just fine with God.

Geez it seems to me that of anyone is mirroring US politics it’s the let anyone have Communion crowd, not the ones who are bewildered by them.

Just out of curiosity, what article currently posted on the frontpage of the NCR website represents a distortion of Catholicism?
The simple fact that they have the word “Catholic” present in their name represents a distortion of Catholicism.

Since you can’t answer my challenge - You loose.

Lose.

And no, he didn’t. There is no obligation for a person with experience and wisdom to justify his opinions formed through the years to every person that asks. I have noted the same thing as the deacon, but have no desire to do another’s research.

Not sure why you think he has experience or wisdom. The shark avatar alone suggests otherwise.
I did not realize two posters had said the same thing. I only caught @(name removed by moderator)'s reference.
Nevertheless, it sounds to me like you are saying that once you have hardened your heart, its OK to blithly continue to pass judgement on people with no obligation to justify your current opinion…
I cast no judgement on any person. Blithe means, “showing a casual and cheerful indifference considered to be callous or improper,” or “happy or joyous.” I do not know where you get any sense of cheery spirit.

While not judging people morally culpable (that is the meaning of judgmental-ism), it is perfectly necessary to evaluate, judge if you will, rather a person, or in this case a non-person, is reliable. If I were firefighters’ supervisor, I would have to evaluate if a each person was fit for the job in order to keep all alive. When it comes to news, I have to evaluate whether a media outlet, blogger, or individual, is competent in telling the truth.

“Hardened you heart” is a phrase that the Bible uses for sin, and its use here is inappropriate. Yet I do not accuse you of being judgmental, just of using a poor choice or words. Even then, I do not keep my opinion unchanging, I just do not change it quickly when it has been formed over the years and on solid reason. I do not have time, or need, to always re-investigate a site (NCR or LSN) every time they release a new story. If over the years I notice a change, I am willing to change my opinion of them. This is something I think the young struggle with more than the older people. What is perceived as stubbornness may be an efficient mental process.

I am not even going to dignify that with a response. Although, I certainly would be justified in doing so, being that it’s an attack and a insult against me, personally! Which I thought was something that was prohibited here at CAF.

Have a nice Lent!

Fair enough. However, I think my initial request for a current example was a fair one too.

I have nothing against sharks, but they are generally considered to be predatory & cold blooded. If that wasn’t your intention, then maybe it wasn’t a wise choice for an avatar.

No, not quite. You’re forgetting your previous line before the shark avatar comment. “Not sure why you think he has experience or wisdom.” As if you’re Insinuating that I’m someone without the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment. Someone who lacks intelligence. IOW, a personal insult.

Sure. I get that. My only objection was the, “You lose.” part. Not answering is not the same as concession.

I do not mind giving some of my past experience off the top of my head. When I have checked into documentation for LSN, their most common source, by far, has been their previous articles. I have also seen anonymous unnamed source “close to the pope” used. I have also noticed their headlines are very often not found anywhere in the body of the article, but are a matter of editorial opinion. I have mentioned this several times on CAF.
