Why doo Catholics believe Mary to be queen of heaven?
Thanks for asking the question, I think most Catholics are always looking for an excuse to talk about Our Blessed Mother, just a guess though. We believe it primarily because it is the truth and revealed to mankind by God.

To assist us in our belief, we have history and logic as well! In biblical times, a kingdom would have a King and would also have a Queen. The mother of the king, not the wife/wives, was the Queen. As Jesus is the King of Heaven, that makes his mother the Queen of Heaven. In Jesus’ kingdom, as in the biblical kingdoms, the mother is Queen of everything that the Son is King of.

People much smarter than me can give you a much better answer, but this is sort of the basic premise.

MUNIFICENTISSIMUS DEUS
  1. Hence the revered Mother of God, from all eternity joined in a hidden way with Jesus Christ in one and the same decree of predestination,(47) immaculate in her conception, a most perfect virgin in her divine motherhood, the noble associate of the divine Redeemer who has won a complete triumph over sin and its consequences, finally obtained, as the supreme culmination of her privileges, that she should be preserved free from the corruption of the tomb and that, like her own Son, having overcome death, she might be taken up body and soul to the glory of heaven where, as Queen, she sits in splendor at the right hand of her Son, the immortal King of the Ages.(48)

Excellent sources. I really liked the catholic bridge site. Bookmarked that one for future reading.

Thanks,

Matthew 19:26

The OLD testament talks about idolizing
a “Queen of heaven”, but that was before
GOD made Mary the true Queen of Heaven!!
Jer. 7:18 talks about it, but those people
DIDN’T know the TRUE Queen of heaven!!

I read the Catholic Bridge article. It thinks of Jesus in terms of an earthly king, and reasons that He must have a queen to reign beside Him. This is worldly thinking. What He does have, is a bride. We are to reign with Him as kings. That is why He is called “King of Kings” in Revelation. Mary also takes part in this just as we do.

Indeed she does. She is the first to do so–the first Church of Christ. Her place is exalted because God exalted her in the Incarnation. He has often chosen people for special roles in his plan of salvation. We would be niggardly to ignore whom he has exalted and who have obtained perfection in his grace. Indeed, we need her and other saints as examples and as prayer partners in our struggles here on earth.

No it isn’t.
You evangelicals always want an example from the Bible, and when Catholics give you one, this time from the Old Testament, you say it’s ‘worldly’.
Jesus IS the earthly AND Heavenly King.

Indeed, and it all has to do with his being the Second Adam, the title St. Paul liked to use. Mary is the Second Eve. Without her consent, the Age of Grace, which was ushered in at the Incarnation would never have happened. She corrected Eve’s no to God with her yes to God. If that isn’t reason enough to honor her, I don’t know what is.

Is Jesus a king?

In ancient Israel, the queens were the mothers of the kings…not their wives.

Therefore, the Mother of the King is the Queen.

Mary, mother of Jesus, is Queen of Heaven.

New Testament addendum:
Revelation Chapter 12:1 A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.
Some versions say “in the heavens …”.

If this woman (crowned, notice) is NOT Mary … it is someone less. For the Holy Spirit filled Elizabeth declared in Luke 1 that she was “blessed among women”.

She may be Queen, but she’s more as well: the first Christian. And Patron Saint of the Church through her two quotes:

“Let it be done unto me according to your word …” and

"Do whatever He (Jesus) tells you … "

Her Queenship does not subtract from Jesus’ Kingship one iota.

And if one day we ourselves are granted “a crown” … we’ll be receiving it from Him.

It’s good not to have idols before the Lord. And Mary is not one of those. Rather, she proclaims Him as her Savior (and did before He was yet born!).

The Church, which will one day be presented to Him, pure and spotless as a bride, is also better understood while pondering the intimacy between Jesus and Mary.

🙂 :heaven:

Mary: Queen Mother

Luke 1:31–33
And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there will be no end.

Jesus inherits David’s throne, and Mary becomes Queen Mother. Support for the principle of the Queen Mother in the House of David is found clearly in the following passages:

1 Kings 2:19
When Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah, the king stood up to meet her, bowed down to her and sat down on his throne. He had a throne brought for the king’s mother, and she sat down at his right hand.

Since Solomon had MANY wives, none of them would be queen. In fact, it was his mother that sat on the throne. This idea is also evident in the book of Jeremiah:

Jeremiah 13:18
18 Say to the king and to the queen mother, “Come down from your thrones, for your glorious crowns will fall from your heads.”

From these two passages, we can see that the mother of the king held the title of Queen in the Davidic kingdom. We also know that Mary is the Queen of Heaven from the following:

Revelation 12:1-2
1A great and wondrous sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. 2She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth.

Since the writer goes on to say that the woman gave birth to a son who would rule the nations, we can conclude that the woman wearing the crown in heaven is the Mother of Jesus, Mary.

Additionally, Jesus establishes Peter as His royal steward for He gives to Peter “the keys of the kingdom of heaven”. This alludes to the prophecy of Isaiah that reads,

Isaiah 22:20-22
"In that day I will summon my servant, Eliakim son of Hilkiah. I will clothe him with your robe and fasten your sash around him and hand your authority over to him. He will be a father to those who live in Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.”

In ancient times, the king would choose a Royal Steward or prime minister who literally wore a large key as a symbol of his office and who spoke with the authority of the king. Jesus gives Peter the authority to speak in His name and extends his authority beyond the earthly realm when he gives Peter the “keys to the kingdom of heaven.”

Mary as Gebirah and Queen Mother
Taken from The Crucified Rabbi: Judaism and the Origins of Catholic Christianity
By Taylor R. Marshall

The royal and messianic Kingdom of David held its capital in Jerusalem, beginning with King David ca. 1004 B.C. and was eclipsed in 586 B.C. with the capture of King Zedekiah and the forced exile of those Jews who were still alive. Prior to the tragic Babylonian exile, the true King of Judah and heir of David sat enthroned in Jerusalem. Moreover, there were two other important figures alongside the Davidic king in the messianic court of Jerusalem. Next to the king, the second most important person in the Kingdom of Judah was the Gebirah. This Hebrew title translates literally, “Mighty Woman” and refers to the mother of the Jewish king. Most translators render Gebirah as “Queen Mother.”

This Jewish Gebirah possessed a powerful influence over the kingdom. This power and authority flowed from her status as the mother of the Davidic king, not from her own personal importance. Rightly understood, the Queen Mother held a political office and signified the legitimate genealogy of the king. King Solomon the Wise instituted the formal place of the Queen Mother when he ascended to the throne of his father, King David. One of the first things King Solomon did after his enthronement was to place a throne at his right hand and enthrone his mother as the Gebirah:

12 So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David; and his kingdom was firmly established. 13 Then Adonijah son of Haggith came to Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother. She asked, “Do you come peaceably?” He said, “Peaceably.” 14 Then he said, “May I have a word with you?” She said, “Go on.” 15 He said, “You know that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel expected me to reign; however, the kingdom has turned about and become my brother’s, for it was his from the LORD. 16 And now I have one request to make of you; do not refuse me.” She said to him, “Go on.” 17 He said, “Please ask King Solomon—he will not refuse you—to give me Abishag the Shunammite as my wife.” 18 Bathsheba said, “Very well; I will speak to the king on your behalf.” 19 So Bathsheba went to King Solomon, to speak to him on behalf of Adonijah. The king rose to meet her, and bowed down to her; then he sat on his throne, and had a throne brought for the king’s mother, and she sat on his right (1 Kings 2:12-19).

King Solomon rose to greet his mother and bowed down before her—not because he worshipped her as a goddess, but rather because as King he understood the honor due to the Queen Mother. Her presence in the court signified that Solomon was the legitimate heir of King David because she literally served as the flesh and blood link between father and son. Give the importance of genealogical dynasties, the office and role of the Queen Mother existed in many other cultures, as well. A similar office of a Gebirah was also honored in the northern kingdom of Israel. “We are going down to visit the princes and the family of the queen mother” (2 Kings 10:13).

Jeremiah highlighted the place of preeminence held by the Queen Mother by the end of the Davidic Kingdom when he wrote: “Say to the king and to the queen mother: Come down from your throne” (Jer 13:18). The end of the Davidic reign from Jerusalem is signaled by the dethronement of the Davidic king and his mother. The Queen Mother was so important that the end of the kingdom meant that she must also be deposed.

We see here that it is quite natural for Catholic Christians to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her son is the true Davidic King and she is rightly enthroned at his right hand as the Gebirah and Queen Mother of the Kingdom of God (The Crucified Rabbi, Marshall, Taylor R., p.53-54).

Jesus is a King in the line of David.

In the Davidic Kingdom, the Queen is the King’s mother.

So Mary has a Queenship in a way that nobody else does because she has a relationship with the King that nobody else does.

She is His mother. She is the only one who is His mother.

  • God point blank IN THE BIBLE tells David that his throne will endure forever. Does God lie? HECK NO.
  • Jesus, even being resurrected and ascended and sitting at the right hand of God, offering Himself, through His church and the Sacraments, pleads intercession for us on Earth and yes, is still a descendant of King David.
  • When Jesus returns to Earth he will establish his never ending kingdom on Earth, re-establishing the Davidic Kingdom on Earth where, with the Queen Mother to his right, he will usher in God’s magnificent return to Paradise for ALL ETERNITY.
  • May we ever be found among those called to the Marriage Supper of the Lamb and the coronation of Jesus Christ as King of the Universe. Amen!

We do not ignore Mary, buy neither do we ignore what God has said and is doing. If one were to ask of Jesus, Who is thy mother? What would He answer? His answer was, "For whosoever shall do the will of my Father, which is in heaven, the same is My brother and sister and mother. This means that we are all on an equal footing. There is no respect of persons with God. Mary is not to be confused with the church. The church is built on the apostles.
Now, what we would have to admit, is if anyone has authority to rule with Christ, he should be seated with the King in His throne room. But the bible says we ARE seated together with Christ. Eph.2:6. Furthermore it says we have obtained an inheritance in Christ. That means that as sons of God, we take part in whatever Jesus inherits. Now please remember that the Queen Mother does not reign with the king. She has no authority to declare or decree anything. She can only make a suggestion. But those who are privileged to reign with Christ do have kingdom authority. So, thus, if Mary is included with us as sons and daughters of God, it actually raises her to a higher level. This is why Jesus.spoke the words “Woman, behold thy son!” to Mary from the cross. She was now to relate to Him as her savior and not His mother.
In the kingdom of Heaven, being “first” doesn’t give you a higher or greater position as it does in the world. Jesus said in Mt.11:11, "Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there has not risen a greater than John the Baptist ; notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. "

I realize it’s impossible for you to agree with any of this but this is what i see the in the Bible.
If you can show something else from scripture, then I’d be happy to believe it.

Shalom,
Jerry

Mary is synonymous with the church and she is the model Par Excellence, she conceived without sin.

We cannot imagine a creature sinless. We cannot.

It is the Church who has crowned Mary Queen of heaven and earth.

So there is the other dimension with Scripture, not just Scripture alone. It is tradition…how one lives out the apostolic faith through the tradition they have given us. Mary’s intercession was not made known until about 200 AD. And with church documentation, and continued help by the Virgin in times of great trouble for early Christians, there came about a common thread people experienced of Mary.

That is, she helped people to experience the light of heaven in their earthly circumstances. She helped them carry their crosses and relieve heavy burdens amidst great suffering. Most of the times, circumstances didn’t change, but their lives were now bearable with the help of the Blessed Virgin’s prayers.

And because of her personal care for us, people began to see her over time as our heavenly mother to the point the Church named her Queen of Heaven. Because she is and Christ Himself is her crown.
