Is Masturbation the only "debatable" Sin?

I am 23 years old. I’ve never had a boyfriend… never even had my first kiss. There are many guys who ask me out on dates but I just didn’t like more than a friend so I decided to just stay single. Anyway, last week I actually tried to masturbate… I didn’t do it because I wanted sexual pleasure. I did it because I was just curious to see what was going to happen… I guess I was curious to see biologically what was going to happen if I stimulated that area a little. Kinda like an experiment if you will. I wasn’t intentionally looking to get an orgasm. I just did it for a little and I stopped after cuz I got scared… I started feeling some sort of pleasure and as soon as I did I stopped completely. I only tried it twice but like I said I stopped immediately because I felt guilty. The same day it happened I went to see a priest and I confessed face to face and I told him everything. I didn’t hold back at all and I even started crying. I told him it was curiousity but I stopped myself from going further. First of all, he said… he was shocked that I was 23 and I never did anything like that before. He told me that it was good that I stopped when i realized what I was doing. Would you say this was a grave sin? It doesn’t matter anymore I guess because I did confess the same day it happened but I’m just wondering… in my context, would you say that this took away my virginity?

Masturbation is a mortal sin. It isn’t debatable. It doesn’t matter what “most of the world thinks”, it matters whether or not it is sinful.

Anyone who encourages masturbation is foolish. Masturbation increases lustful feelings. It is like a drug, the more you do it, the more difficult it is to give up.The more you masturbate, the more likely you are to look at pornography, or engage in lustful immoral thoughts. The more you do those things, the more likely you are to objectify women, and the more difficult it will be for you not to think of women in impure ways every time you see them.

Masturbation can be overcome. It just takes a few weeks of hard work, and then you will be over it forever.

It is by it’s nature hedonistic.
I take it you do not believe female masturbation is a mortal sin?

You are still a virgin.

I’m sorry but I’m going to have to invite a slew of attacks. Load up the theological shotguns and take aim.

I replied to this post earlier. I was a seminarian. You can take all the pot shots you want about how it’s good I didn’t get ordained, but there exists in the church a duality about masturbation.

Masturbation is…healthy!

Yes, I said it. It is psychologically healthy. In moderation. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs has recently incorporated sex, along with food, shelter, a need for acceptance, etc. We are not Manicheans, flogging the impure flesh for spiritual advancement. God made the penis and the vagina. The penis and the vagina were God’s ideas. He thought of them! And then he made them! And they are functional! We are embodied souls, part flesh and part spirit. When one gets out of balance, there is turmoil within a person. St. Paul had “a thorn in his side” which some have suggested might be reference to his penis. Others will no doubt dive for their Bibles to refute me–I said it has been suggested. No one knows for sure. Does this mean St. Paul masturbated? We can only guess.

I have seen too many people fall into personality disorders and self-doubt and even the greater sin of despair over masturbation. Masturbation should be seen as smoke arising from the fire: if you’re masturbating twenty times a day, that is a sign of something else deeper going on, and you should do some serious self-analysis and soul searching, call a priest, enter therapy. Yes, it is a sin. But it is overall a healthy human activity, and it doesn’t mean you are evil. If we assume the old saying as true, that 90% of men masturbate and the other 10% are lying, then I can say with all truthfulness that I’ve never masturbated in all my life! Do you believe me?

We must be on guard against masturbation, but for most of us it happens, and when it does, ask God for help, but don’t commit the worse sin of despair. Or thinking of the flesh as evil. St. Francis of Assissi, allegedly, threw himself into banks of snow when the mood hit him. And no, I cannot find the book where I read that!. But I believe it.

The lesson here is, if you feel the need to masturbate, hopefully it is winter. Yes, find your soul mate and consumate your sexuality in the holy bonds of matrimony. But if you masturbate before then, take heart! You are not alone. The saints have gone before you, rolling in the snow.

When one gets out of balance, there is turmoil within a person.
And what I mean by that, is that there is such a thing as being too spiritual. There has to be balance. St. Francis died a 42 and he regretted his harsh mistreatment of “Brother ***”–his nickname for his body. The body has needs, and what effects the body also effects the soul. Too much masturbation effects the soul in the same way that too much fasting can effect the soul. If you igore the body too much, it will have its revenge. If you ignore the soul, it will die making you a gluttonous zombie (this is hyperbole. If the preceding sentence ends up as a quote in someone else’s post, I will be perturbed).

No one has yet gone to a medical encyclopedia and looked up for me whether or not it is true that masturbation can decrease the risk of prostate cancer. It sounds hokey, but a medical doctor once told me that, and I truly want an answer. There have to be some Father Doctor’s that participate in this forum. Where are you!

Okay, that asterisk thing took me by surprise. Let’s just say that St. Francis of Assissi called his body “Brother Assissi” without the “issi”

Never encourage another to experiment with sin. God takes notice of … and will hold you accountable. Why do many desire to draw others down to their level of flawed morality … just to so they can feel better about their error ?

Now, regarding the Prostate matter. Does the clergy have a higher incidence of Prostate Cancer ? No.

Yes, physically the prostate will feel some relief afterwards … but, your spirit will not be rewarded. You have a choice … honor the spirit, or placate your body. Yes, most of us have made wrong decisions … recognize them and confess them.

Masturbation is…healthy!
 is right. Sin is never healthy.

Sin, by definition, refers to those acts we commit that separate us from God. No amount of rationalization or appeal to psychological “experts” can make a sinful act anything less than sinful. How can something than separates us from God ever be healthy?

Yes, God draws straight with crooked lines, so even when we sin, He can use those sins to teach us things (humility, for example). Sometimes sin (especially sexual sin) can be a wake-up call to bring people back to their faith even more fervently. But that does not, therefore, mean that evil is healthy and good! It only means that God is more powerful than evil.

And, yes, you are absolutely right that people should not fall into despair over this sin. God will forgive us if we but go to Him! (hopefully in the Sacrament of Confession, for us Catholics). But, to say that masturbation is “psychologically healthy” is much, much different than a simple caution against despair. To say that something is healthy is to say that something is good. Masturbation is not good, under any circumstances, no matter what the “experts” say.

A wise priest once told me, “When you are tempted to sin, think of God’s judgment. If you have already sinned, remember God’s mercy.”

Too many times, we do the opposite. We think of God’s mercy before the fact (making it easier for us to succumb to temptation), but only of His judgment afterwards (making us despair).

IMO, your post does a severe disservice for all those who struggle with this issue. All you have managed to do is to is encourage people not to worry about it. That will not remove the guilt one naturally feels after the deed. When our conscience is well-formed, guilt is a natural feeling that let’s us know we have done something wrong. Does that mean we wallow in our guilt? Of course not. We go to Confession and then let it go. But it is a great mistake to just shrug it off as no big deal. That’s how we kill our conscience.

Hi,

It occurs to me that of all the sins I can imagine especially those which are regarded as “grave” …masturbation isn’t universally seen that way. Not even close.

Most mortal sins such as murder, stealing lying etc can easily be accepted as 100% wrong despite mitigating circumstances that would have to be extreme. You just can’t make a good argument fopr them at all!

But masturbation. Most of the world considers it a bad habit at worst. Many an actually very good thing In fact I can come up several reasons where it can actually BE good! Let’s separate it from lust and pornography. Of course it can be as perverted as any human proclivity. In fact it can run the gambit from simple quick release to pornagraphic extremes.

First of all I doubt I will steal, kill, commit adultery, lies (maybe a white lie) all not a big deal to resist. But as a single male I can guarantee I will have a “release” in the form of nocturnal emission or I’ve even had them semi awake with little stimulation. Men have them under many circumstances.

So since it’s inevatable that I WILL how can it be a sin? Once again sure combine with pornography or lust or more perverted natures I agree whole heartedly. Are there rules to this? If I can just reach down and quickly release the tension on very rare occations…

Aside note I recall having a relationship with a woman where we decided to be chaste and not have sex. On 2 occations our kissing became so intense both of us were weak in the knees. I said one more kiss and I will “release”! I got the kiss and “released”. And it prevented our adultery. At the point we were we weren’t going to separate corners ok.! yes we went too far but didn’t know our limits till past them.

Once again you could leave me with a million dollars and I’d not get the urge to steal. Leave me with your wife and i won’t touch her. Wouldn’t hurt a fly much less kill anyone.

So if I feel like I’m gonna find some pornography on the web if I don’t get relief…My imagination might start to go towards your wife…etc…wouldn’t a more innocent release be actually prescribed to the weak?

Thanks,

W
It’s Master debatable

Nom, do you really think you can see into 100% of people’s hearts? I’m 42 and single and know that chastity is a virtue and lust is a sin. Having travelled both roads quite far, I can tell you without doubt in my heart that the virtue brings happiness and the vice brings sadness.

The vice turns me inward to selfishness and greed; the virtue turns me outward toward love and an authentic connection.

You only have one life. To live it abundantly, you have to live it authentically. To live authentically, you have to see the humanity of the people around you, to connect with the who they are, not the what they can give you.

This vice is in direct opposition to that. We are running a race; that admits to a struggle. A struggle lets you know you’re alive.

Fair enough. Clearly I am someone struggling with this. I read the post above by melissajohn718 and it broke my heart.
Now, regarding the Prostate matter. Does the clergy have a higher incidence of Prostate Cancer ? No.
Sometimes people post things on this forum just to be wiseguys, but what I’m about to say is serious.

This begs the question “Do the clergy masturbate?” I really was a seminarian, you know. Stayed all four years. My last year I was plagued with doubts, and didn’t go on to the major seminary. I’m going to try and be responsible here, but there has always been a “don’t-ask don’t tell” attitude, at least when I was there. This may have been part of the scandal in my own heart that made me leave the seminary, or perhaps I really didn’t have a vocation. One night at formations a Franciscan (I don’t remember his name, and if I did, I wouldn’t mention it) gave us a talk about celibacy, and when asked about masturbation, admitted via metaphor that he had “released” that very morning. He wasn’t admonished harshly by the rector, nor thrown out on his ear. Everybody laughed, some said “eww” and that was that. He went on to talk about balance, as I did in earlier posts.

That’s what I mean about a duality in the church. On one side there is medical science (I mean overall, I’m not quoting any particular study) that says masturbation is normal, and then the church maintaining its sinfulness. And I’ve confessed masturbation numerous times, and like melissajohn718 received that incredulous, sometimes bored look from a priest. I was absolved, but clearly we’re not all on the same page. And it’s frustrating.

I sometimes wonder if that doctor I visited was perhaps anti-Catholic. There are plenty of those who are hostile to the faith. But it breaks my heart when people weep over masturbation like a column of fire is about to descend and strike them from the earth. This issue is so common, which is why this thread will most likely go to 1,000. I thank you both, BRB and Joe5859 for putting the breaks on me.

I hear you. I’m 40 and married with a 2 year old. I’ve been around. I’m not trying to advocate for masturbation. I’m trying to be fully human, as virtuous as humanly possible. I tried for many years to be an “angel” but God gave me this body to live in, and it has sexual organs. I am maintaining chastity as best I can.

You want to hear something funny? I lost my job several months ago due to politics at a college where I was teaching English and have been unable to find a job since. And in my sadness and depression, reverted to masturbating to on-line porn. My vigorous participation in this forum over the last few days is keeping me from masturbating right now. I’m claiming my computer back in the name of Jesus. That’s the truth. Pray for me.

I hear you. … That’s the truth. Pray for me.
You pray for me, too.

I hear you. I’ll put you in my prayers right next to me. I went for years where I tell you from my heart I think the blessed mother kept those temptations away from me, then I was foolish, intellectually foolish and turned away, and I have been struggling, falling, getting up and struggling. My main weapon in this fight is to pray a mystery of the Rosary on my knees (with a pillow) every night, and also to try to add some self denial to strengthen my character, and to ask the Blessed Virgin to obtain for me the grace of chastity; to take 15 minutes at the three o’clock hour to pray the divine mercy chaplet, and then just keep pushin it out of my mind. And I got to confession more often (not as often as I should) Gonna try and go tomorrow morning again.

Seriously, without that Rosary I was falling; with it I’m struggling.
I’m still happier when I’m struggling than when I’m falling. And I believe we can get to a better place in this life.

This post was a yes that means yes. Just plain and straight to you. You are not alone.

How sad and disturbing that a group of men trying to grown in holiness were delighting in someone else’s sin. I wonder what the reaction of the saints would have been. Disgust, probably.

I wonder if this priest realizes that he caused scandal by confessing to you as he did. He has made you think that it’s acceptable for priests or seminarians to masturbate.
That’s what I mean about a duality in the church. On one side there is medical science (I mean overall, I’m not quoting any particular study) that says masturbation is normal, and then the church maintaining its sinfulness.
The Church has always been unwavering in her teaching: masturbation is a deliberate misuse of one’s sexuality and constitutes grave matter. She has never compromised.

There are many many things in our culture that society would have us think of as “normal”: abortion, divorce, premarital sex. These things are also justified by claims that they can be healthy: “It’s unhealthy to have sex without using a condom.” “It’s unhealthy to remain in a marriage when you don’t feel any strong attraction to your spouse anymore.”

The truth is, God designed our souls and bodies and He knows how we will function best. When He tells us something is sinful, it’s because He knows it’ll hurt us.
And I’ve confessed masturbation numerous times, and like melissajohn718 received that incredulous, sometimes bored look from a priest.
Perhaps you could try praying for these priests, asking God that He will help them understand the effect that their mannerisms and facial expressions are having on penitents.

If it’s difficult for you to feel contrition during confession because of how the priest is reacting, maybe you could consider going behind the screen.

God bless.

No…listen for about the 10th time…

Abortion is murder. 10 commandments ring a bell…Christ and countless Biblical passages make this clear murder is a capital crime. It has nothing to do with how I feel about. It’s the “law”.

Nothing is said about masturbation! Zip, nada, zero!

So we have one topic with numerous mentions and another with none.

That is the difference. And I’m sorry for you if you can’t grasp that.

Now all that being said the Church in it’s wisdom has proclaimed it grave and leans in the direction of it being a very serious matter, yet stops short of saying mortal sin in 100% of situations.

The Church has no qualms about abortion being 100% wrong. A violently raped teenager who gets pregnant can not have an abortion with Catholic Church graces.

Can you understand …

And sorry I’m not struggling with masturbation. I’ve been 100% up front with my experiences. How about you?

W
W,

You are still refusing to address the fallacy in your logical premises and conclusions. Until you can change the logical structure, your argument cannot move forward.

Simply because one action is more abhorrent to you than another does not mean one should be less sinful.

Again, holding to your logic, plenty of people can claim abortion is NOT a mortal sin. Since you continue to hold to your logic, regardless of your argument, do you fully accept that abortion is therefore not a mortal sin?

Your post above makes it clear that you don’t accept this. You are in turn throwing out your own logic.

Same experience here, from 2 different priests…just not that big a deal. So when trying to form your concience on the matter, who do you listen to? Your own local priest, or the folks at CAF?

If I am instructed by the clergy, if it is mortally sinful, who does the guilt fall on? Me, him, both of us? Who do we believe? How lenient is that sub-paragraph in the Catechism?

I was explained that it was a different situation if one had a strong urge to perform the act and did it when there was no wife around, or you were refused for a minor reason, vs if one came home, made sure no one was coming over, put on some porn and went at it when their wife would be available to unite with.

He said he wasn’t encouraging me to go all out, but if it happend every now and again, to not worry about it, go easy on myself, and keep on being the good and charitable person that I am.

It kind of sounded like it was like drinking or smoking. Enjoy yourself, but don’t let it consume you.

While it sounds like it hasn;t been proven 100% apparently alot of research points to the fact that it does. news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3072021.stm And I have read before that apparently it decreases the urinary tract infections in women.

Abortion is not murder in many countries of the world. It is only a woman’s right to decide.
