Is Mormonism Christian ?

I think Mormonism is as Christian as Islam. I think Joseph Smith was as much a prophet as Muhammad.

Both religions were founded in Christian environments which gave both of them some Christian ideas.

Both prophets claimed to be the voice of God, but without God’s testimony to the truth of their claims.

That is my opinion.

It certainly does…and most of the folks who deny that Mormons are Christians have no hesitation whatsoever in barging right through that door, with banners and pamphlets flying.

Over the years I have come to the conclusion that the best definition is what the dictionary uses, with one minor addition: Most dictionaries claim that “Christian” means…someone who follows the religion of Christ (or something akin to that wording.)

that too leaves a whole bunch of problems…people saying that “I have the TRUE religion of Christ and you don’t”…defining the 'true religion of Christ by the beliefs THEY hold about Him, denying everyone else. Of course, that causes problems with all those ‘everyone else’s.’

Then there is that problem with the JW’s and (maybe) the Unitarians. See, the JW’s don’t CLAIM to be Christian. At least this year they don’t.

So my definition of “Christian” goes like this: someone who follows the teachings of Jesus Christ as he believes them to be, and who claims to be Christian.

That covers pretty much everybody who claims to be Christian, leaves out those who want to be left out, but makes no judgment about the truth of the beliefs being followed.

Waddayathink?
I think it’s a very practical definition that agrees with the way most folks think.

Y’know, I can honestly say that while I have heard “Mormons are not saved” in a 'tone of concern" a couple of times, usually it is said in a tone of self congratulation; as in 'I’m saved, you’re not, nya, nya…"

Even those who say it in a ‘tone of concern’ spoil it by going on to tell us what we really believe, why that his wrong, and that we are either ‘not Christian’ or ‘going to hell’ (generally both).

This would be irritating enough, except that when people start telling me what I ‘really’ believe, they get it wrong. When I correct them, wouldn’t the logical response be “oh, I didn’t know that, how nice…” perhaps even followed by relief that we aren’t as weird as they thought?

Nope, it is always, and I mean ALWAYS, an argument; 'you do TOO believe this, or that" and off they go again. They dig up obscure quotes by obscure leaders, or non-canonical quotes by more well known leaders, and decide for themselves that THIS is scripture to us, and thus proves that what they claim is true.

In the meantime, none of them ever actually tell me what’s so right about their own beliefs. You know, just present them as the shining gift they are supposed to be, and let me do my own comparing. Nope, inevitably (and that word is deliberately chosen) “their” views are presented in terms of what they think mine are. “Mormons believe this and that and we don’t.”

Which of course isn’t very helpful when they insist upon getting our beliefs wrong.

OK, what DO you believe, then? (rhetorical question, not an actual one, by the way, just for the purposes of this rant)

Actually, most of the Catholics on this board know exactly what I’m talking about here in terms of fundamentalist Christians.

Just look at the recent thread “Catholics worship Mary.” It is a milder form of this, but you can see the way it works.

I wish I had the…something…required to just step back and let ‘them’ argue with themselves, but I have this quixotic need to bang some sense into heads. (shrug)

Diana, this is the thing that comes up in re: Non-Catholic Religions forum…Some folks want to divide it “better”, into “Non-Catholic Christian” & “Non-Christian Religions”, & there I am again, saying, “But what about the Mormons?” (I could say Quakers, or something, but there are a lot of you around 🙂 here–an hour & I can be at Hill Cumorah).
By my best understanding, Mormons are…I don’t know.🤷 It depends on your definition of Christian. By mine ( form of baptism), not Christian.
But I also know that, a couple of years ago, after my heart surgery, that–long after it was clear that I was not going to be a convert–that the young missionaries kept my steps shoveled. They waved and/or said “hi” when I saw them in restaurants & stores…
They were kind & caring & clearly believers & yet…I just don’t buy it.🤷
But–if those 2 guys are going to hell, I know a lot of people (including one called herein:blush: “Zooey”), who are:eek: in a** lot** of trouble. And I hear you on the fundamentalist take on Catholics being kinda the same.

But I never mean to say or to imply that you & all LDS are going to hell. I am not, as my grandfather used to say, “God’s admissions counseler”…
Which is why I can be over here, arguing who is & who isn’t Christian…and then go beg folks NOT to throw the LDS into the same category as, say, Muslims. If I were you, that would make me  .As it is, I am  about that kind of thing anyway.

And now, I suppose, the Muslims are going to come after me.

Sincerely,
Zooey

Mormons are not Christinan. I who was once Mormon know all of their teachings including the ones they do not wish outsiders to know. The God they believe in is not the same God, because they believe god was once a man with his own god and because of his rightiouseness he was given the gift of becoming a god. They believe the same for Christ that he is not part of the trinity was merely a man who was given the gift of becoming a god. They also believe if they live a rightiouse life through the Mormon church they themselves will become gods and will be able to create there own people. They will also teach in a closed room that the pope is the antichrist with detailed information to argue this case which is absured! They teach that the catholic church was once the true church that has fallen from grace and Christ restored the church on eathr with the Mormans. I could go on about verry scary teachings they teach behind closed doors that would make youre jaw dropp but wont for now.

Pray that they will search with sincerity and find the truth!

Jake, I don’t believe you.

I’m sorry, but I simply don’t. For one thing, a former Mormon wouldn’t spell it “Morman,” and for another, you have obviously never been behind the ‘closed doors’ that you claim hides things Mormons ‘don’t want you to know.’ You have gotten your information from sources other than Mormons, or from in the Temple.

While I could dismiss the “Morman” goof as a spelling error (you didn’t pay any attention to the spell checker for other things, and your grammar reflects more hurry than care) but the claim about the ‘behind closed doors’ is pretty glaring.

There are other former Mormons on this board, a few of whom are very critical of the church. I do not believe that you are one of them. You should pay attention to them for awhile to see what a former Mormon, critical of the church, would actually say and do.

This is the test to know when a person was once a morman. We were exactly alike as mormans and we are exactly alike as former mormans.

Exactly alike?

Well, gingerbread cookies are sweet yet sharply spicy, and when not utterly destroyed, can stay the course for years and years. I’d call that a fair comparison to Mormons.

However, a 'former Mormon" would know enough about the culture and religion to not make simple errors that stand out that much.

It’s like someone claiming to be a "former American’ claiming that we all know the second verse of the National Anthem.

(shrug) What can I say? I don’t believe that Jake was a Mormon. Morman, perhaps…but not a Mormon. I could be wrong, but…I don’t think I am.

Maybe, maybe not. However, here is one explanation of the derivation of the word “Mormon”:

Mosiah 18:4

“And it came to pass that as many as did believe him, did go forth to a place which was called Momon, having received its name from the king, being in the borders of the land having been infested, by time, or at seasons, by wild beasts.”

Appears to mean “more man” (and fewer animals), the original inhabitants of the Americas being animals.

I didn’t see anything glaring in there. He stated things that I and many mormons and former mormons have experienced. That you make a big deal of his spelling is not an indication of who he is. It is an indication of who you are.

A repeated pattern that you do not take a person seriously unless their spelling and grammar are perfect. People have things of value to say, even when they don’t meet your expectations.

For one I am using my blackberry and did not want to download the spell check version needed to correct my spelling errors. Second you make your self sound silly asuming I was lying by my spelling error. And third read the doctrines and covenants of the moprmon church than proceed to put your foot in your mouth

Why would you not post to reply? If everyone really wants me to I will pull up page and chapter in the doctrine and covenants this week and you can look yourselfs. it is not a he or she said this situation it is written in the doctrines and covenants of Joseph Smith. Interesting. I would have looked at that and come to the opposite conclusion; that the name given by the king was given because it was ‘infested’ by wild beasts. In other words, more animals than men.

You had to look rather hard to find this, and really work to eisegete that interpretation…but hey, it’s clever!

Jake, read carefully. I didn’t say you were lying. I said I didn’t believe you. There is a difference.

As well, I went to some trouble to say that the “Morman” was probably a spelling error since you made so many others…Mormons are not immune to lousy spelling. That’s not why I don’t believe you.

I don’t believe you because no real ex-Mormon who had actually been through the Temple or taken Seminary/Institute classes (you know what those are, right?) would claim that we teach things ‘behind closed doors’ that we don’t want others to know.

If you WERE ever a member, you know that investigators go to the same meetings the rest of us go to. The same Sunday School classes, priesthood meetings and Relief Society meetings.

We do have an ‘Investigators’ class’ for new and first year members…but that is short and not always available; mostly everybody goes to Gospel Doctrine.

The Temple ceremony is online and all over the place. Just because we will not discuss it with you doesn’t mean that you can’t find it, and find it very easily.

So…

No.

I don’t believe you. You may have been a nominal Mormon, but your claim is that you know all about the ‘closed door’ secrets.

…and since there aren’t any, that’s a problem.

Again, I could be wrong.
But I don’t think so.

What ward were you in? when? How long were you a member? Did you ever hold the priesthood?

Did you ever go to the Temple? Serve a mission?

WHAT isn’t 'hard to find?"

Chapter and verse, Jake. Chapter and verse.

Oh, by the way, if this teaching you claim is done ‘behind closed doors’ and is stuff that Mormons ‘don’t want you to know,’ what in the world is it doing in the Doctrine and Covenants?

That’s not exactly a secret publication, Jake.

I’m much more interested in knowing if Mormonism is true. If Mormonism is true it is Christian. If it is not true, it doesn’t make any difference.
Re: Is Mormonism Christian ?

No it is not! Here are some of their beliefs.

First you ask “is it true?” Only to William Smith

Do they believe in the Trinity: NO they do not!

Do they believe in an All Good, All Wise, All Powerful God as our Creator? NO they do not!

Do they beleive in Heaven and Hell? NO they do not.

Do they believe in the bible (any Chrsitian Bible)? NO they do not.

Do they believe that Jesus Christ is God and man? NO they do not. (Jesus is only a very good man, and when he rose from the dead, it was “as Michael The Archangel” not God and man.

Was their Leader picked by God? No he was not. William Smith picked William Smith, proclaimed himself a Prophet and an Apostle.

They are a none-chrsitian religion!

I am talking about the beliefs in God. such as:
  1. God used to be a man on another planet, Mormon Doctrine, p. 321. Joseph Smith, Times and Seasons, Vol 5, pp. 613-614; Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses, Vol 2, p. 345, Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 7, p. 333.)
“The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as mans…” (D&C 130:22).
2.After you become a good Mormon and reach the third level of heaven, you have the potential of becoming a god, (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pages 345-347, 354.)
“Then shall they be gods, because they have no end; therefore shall they be from everlasting to everlasting, because they continue; then shall they be above all, because all things are subject unto them. Then shall they be gods, because they have all power, and the angels are subject unto them,” (DC 132:20).
  2. There are many gods, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 163.)
"and they (the Gods) said: Let there be light: and there was light (Book of Abraham 4:3)
You dont need to know what ward I was in or who my Bishop was, I bet you want to know my secret name too! come on if you are mormon than you know what I am talking about. I could write tell my fingers fall off and you will still play this game. If anyone does not believe me ask an ex mormon about the things discussed behind closed doors and there so called truths after you enter the temple! May you find the truth and god bless!

Jake:

I think Diana is mostly basing her assessment of you on your speaking of what the LDS Church teaches about the Catholic Church in the Temple.

I understand the Endowment has changed a bit over the years, but I never remember there being anything spoken of about the Catholic Church in it.

Maybe that’s one of the parts that has been altered (I am after all only 24 years old)?

In any case, I too am skeptical of your having been Mormon, but that skepticism doesn’t mean I believe you’re lying.

To answer the question of the OP:

I don’t know.

I don’t like getting into these types of conversations for two reasons:
  1. Christianity is already so ridiculously diverse that it defies utility to argue over who is a “true Christian”.
  2. Arguing who is or isn’t a “true Christian” smells as awful as the logical fallacy from which it obviously comes (see: “No True Scotsman”)

Mormon temple endowment changed in 1990.

Lucifer said, pre-1990: Then with that enmity I will buy up armies and navies, popes and priests, and reign with blood and horror on this earth.

Lucifer now says, post-1990: *Then with that enmity I will buy up armies and navies, false priest who oppress and tyrants who destroy, and reign with blood and horror on this earth.

*LUCIFER: Do you preach the orthodox religion?
PREACHER: Yes, that is what I preach.
LUCIFER: If you will preach your orthodox religion to these people and convert them, I will pay you well.
PREACHER: I will do my best.

(This portion was removed entirely in 1990.)
