I Have Another Question What Do Mormon Believe About The Trinity ,any One Please
They believe, and teach, that the Holy Trinity is an invention of Greek philosophers. That this philosophy was forced into Christian belief by Constantinople at Nicaea.

Of course, there is not historical fact to this, but history to Mormons is malleable, nearly a belief system in itself.

I’m tired and working long hours, not getting much sleep and so will probably make less sense to you than is usual. 😛

Your car analogy doesn’t work. I understand what you are saying. In my brain that is wired for programming and logic, you want everyone who knows the name Jesus to be an instance of Christianity.
No.

Not 'everyone who knows the name Jesus." Only those who follow His teachings as they believe them to be, and claim to be Christian. You know, the dictionary definition.
Only problem is, for something to be an instance of something else there has to be of the same nature. Mormonism is not the same nature as Christianity. It is something other. It might have wheels but it isn’t an automobile.

That being said. Do you remember in the Bible where the Apostles complain to Jesus that random people, who are not followers of Jesus, are casting out demons in His name? Jesus says (paraphrasing) to leave them alone, they are not against Him, therefore, they are for Him.

I have this in my head in almost every conversation about who-is-Christian.

The other thing in my head is that the Apostles clearly taught that right-teaching and right-understanding is paramount.

So I have these two things. Which, is why I say, on the one hand, Mormons are like those who are casting out demons in Jesus’ name.

Jesus did not say this made them/you one of His disciples. He only said, to leave them be.

On the other hand, as a Catholic, I believe right-teaching/understanding, what we call orthodoxy, is very important. Not just a little important. Very. As without it, you have a variety of craziness.

On top of that, I have no belief that Jesus’ is going to give us a theology test at our time of judgment. I do believe, and He taught, that we will be judged for how we interact with each other. Which, includes very clear instructions to teach and baptize others.

The teaching part, is where the Apostle’s admonitions come in again. Right teaching. Right belief.

So again, I say. I believe individual Mormons are Christian, in the sense that they follow Jesus’. But in the same form of those who were casting out demons in Jesus’ name.

Finally, this idea you have that Salvation is separate from Jesus’ is pointless. You cannot separate the two, especially not to make your religion into something it is not.
Of course you separate the two, Rebecca, because none of us are in charge of who is to be ‘saved.’ There are only two people who could possibly know whether any one person is ‘saved’ (however you define that…) Jesus–and that person. Nobody else gets a vote.

Now consider this: that example you just gave me; Jesus told His disciples to leave them alone, isn’t that what you said? He then mentioned that they would eventually be judged—but NOT BY THEM. They would be judged by HIM, and Him alone.

In fact, He was a little sharp with them about it.

Now consider this also: you have just said that you would be judged, not on a ‘theology test,’ but upon how you interacted with others and how you taught others…and got them baptized.

What have you taught me over the last four weeks, Rebecca?

Anything I didn’t know before? Have you done ANYTHING except attack my beliefs (and often get them wrong…) and let me know that I am not good enough to be a Christian with you? That I don’t belong in fellowship with you? That your opinion of the doctrines you claim we believe is extremely low…contemptuous, even? That your contempt for my belief system is so great that you will not even acknowledge proven fact about the good it does in the world…you even argue about THAT?

How is that teaching ‘truth?’

Your style of teaching reminds me of the guy on the cliff path whose job is not to guide tourists up the mountain, but rather to push the confused off.

Tell me; what have you tried to teach me? If I allowed you to destroy my faith, what have you given me to replace it with?

…don’t just assume that you have; look at your posts to me. Have you attempted to teach me the ‘true way to believe’ about anything at all? Or have you been so concentrating on destroying what I believe that you have forgotten to do that?

…don’t just assume that you have; look at your posts to me. Have you attempted to teach me the ‘true way to believe’ about anything at all? Or have you been so concentrating on destroying what I believe that you have forgotten to do that?
Such drama. I have no desire to destroy your faith.

I am not here to teach you.

You do not believe in the validity of the original christian church started by st. Peter? LOL! How many accolt members are there on this catholic web site anyways? Mormons are not only a non christian group they are the closest manifistation of blasphemy! Why are you poeple on this sight? You know catholics are not foolish enough to fall for your lies
“accolt”?

Does that mean “cult” or “ocult”? If it is the first, then pretty much everybody on the site is a member of that, since 'cult" means “belief system,”

…and as a pejorative, it has been used by somebody against pretty much everybody. As a descriptive noun it’s pretty much worthless.

if it is “ocult,” sorry—but Mormons are many things, but not that. You won’t so much as see a Oija board or Tarot cards around one of us. (shrug)

Sorry.

Oh, we don’t gamble, either. (remembering fifty cents I blew in a slot machine in Vegas last month–and the look on the clerk’s face when I made him give me the change for the dollar) Ok, we aren’t supposed to gamble.

You claim to have been a Mormon; I have no reason to disbelieve you, but since you were, you already are aware that we know this. So…why make that obvious and irrelevant point, since it happens to be a point that you KNOW we agree on?
I KNOW nothing of the sort. Many people thought that way in my past Mormon filled life. Don’t suggest that your reality might be different than my own!
What is it with you people, anyway?
Here is a forum called “non-Catholic religions.” That sure looks like an invitation to those who are non-Catholic to come and discuss stuff to me…
Now I’ve been here…not all that long. I still have ‘new member’ up under my screen name.
However, I have posted enough times (over 300…) since I’ve been here to give you a good sample.
Have I even once denigrated, insulted or said anything derogatory about Catholicism? Have I once attacked your beliefs, belittled them, or insulted any Catholic because he or she held them?
In fact, I have actually come down on your side against those who attacked your beliefs–even when I didn’t share those beliefs.
Tell me; do you think I’m going to hell?
What do you think I should do to keep from going there?
…and what have you done to make me want to do that?
I have not insulted you directly. You’re simply being touchy. Get over yourself. You don’t represent the doctrines of your church, do you? Seriously? Which doctrines would that be? What Spencer W Kimball taught? Those are the ones I am most familiar with.
Frankly, lady, if becoming a Catholic or a Protestant means that I would have to behave and react to people of other faiths the way you do, then…sorry. Not interested.
You know the funny thing is, you are completely over reacting to who I am. You don’t have a clue who I am. You don’t know how I react to people of other faiths… nor how I treat them. Would you like a couple of examples?
  1. Very best friend in the entire world – Mormon
  2. Unofficially adopted “son” who lives with us – Devout Muslim from Syria.
  3. Owner of my husband’s company and an awesome man who we have traveled around the world with – Reformed Jew
  4. The best gardening/antiquing/garage sale buddy I have – JW
  5. One of my mentors and with whom I frequently attend sweat lodge with – Ojibwe
Do I correct error if asked? You bet I do. Some of us have come to agree to disagree, but I love every one of them and my life would be far less rich if they were not part of it.

Don’t judge someONE. Judge their doctrines. That’s what I’ve been doing that you have found so personally insulting.

in Christ
Steph

No.

You see, dianaiad, you are making a lot of sense in your posts but you will never influence the hardcore poster here who has made a life out of bashing mormon beliefs on this section of the forum. However, when you post, it is much better to write to the possible lurker because when they read your posts, and see the sense in what you post, they may think of mormonism just in a little better light. And so, when you respond to Rebecca or tundramom or to anyone who may not be positive to the lds church it is good to keep the lurker in mind.

As I have said, you are doing a great job here. But the antimormon posters are now attempting to wear you down, so you will leave the forum. That is my take on it. 🙂

I think the only way they are christian is if they believe in Jesus As the Son of god. And they must believe in the Holy Trinity that is God.
of course you would have to obey god’s ten commandments.
after that a name is just a name .
an example would be Peter from the Bible he was Jewish but believed in Jesus. His a Christan but Jew cause he lives by Jewish laws as well.

Such drama. I have no desire to destroy your faith.

I am not here to teach you.
you don’t? Then why insult it…and present it as it is not? Why the negative comments about it?

…and if you are not here to teach me, either, then why are you responding to my posts?

Remember, Rebecca, I am not in any thread attacking YOUR beliefs. In fact, the only time I have referenced Catholic beliefs, it was in defense of them; someone was misrepresenting what prayers to Mary were all about, and I came in on your side.

Given that no Catholic here has turned around to nail me to the wall for it, I think I got the reason you revere and pray to Mary right. I may not agree with it, but at least I got it right–and I’m not criticizing you about it, either.

So…care to explain how your presence, and your comments (in the threads discussing Mormonism) jibe with the “I have no desire to destroy your faith,” and “I’m not here to teach you?”

Mormonism is a soul destroying lie. It teaches false doctrines. It enslaves people to false beliefs.I speak out against mormonism for those reasons.

You speak out against Catholicism by the mere fact that you are Mormon. Here, on a Catholic forum, trying to spread the lies, starting with the first, the so-called “great apostasy”.

Would you define “bashing” to us to show the difference between challenging/refuting and “bashing?”

IMO, “bashing” is just taking cheap shots and not engaging in an actual argument. Civil argument, however, is essential to the pursuit of truth and is what should be done here. We should not be afraid to use strong terms to illustrate strong beliefs or how wrong we think something is (for instance, calling some things blasphemous or sacrilegious); we should be adult enough to handle that sort of thing and remain civil. So we should be able to “attack” beliefs strenuously, so long as we don’t attack people.

I have a question for Mormons. Perhaps there is a better thread for this, but I have not seen one that is active, and I appreciate Dianaiad’s responses so I will post it here where she’s participating.

It seems to me that part of the reasoning behind the Great Apostasy is the idea that if people don’t hold up their end of the bargain, God doesn’t have to hold up His (to preserve the Church, to be with us until the end of the age, to lead us into all Truth, to keep the Church in unity, etc.). To this I have to ask, who is more honorable and faithful, one who keeps their promises despite the person they made promises to not keeping theirs, or one who just disregards the promises?

If a parent and a child have had a fight or strained relationship, will not the loving parent still act in every way a parent despite their child’s rejection? As a more specific analogy, if such a child were sick or even on their death bed, would not the parent still care for them and be at their side?

Perhaps the most direct analogue with God is this: if a spouse is unfaithful to any vow or promise, will the other spouse similarly choose to abandon vows or promises? Is that right or good?

Yes, some promises are conditional–those are contracts. But in the examples that I have given, we have more covenantal, unconditional relationships. Surely God has a covenant relationship with His Church, one where He loves us unconditionally, a Bride to whom Christ has made unconditional promises.

To believe that God is not faithful to His unconditional promises or to His everlasting covenants, seems to be to reject the God of either the OT or the NT for one that is unfaithful and conditional. It is to accept a god who is an employer, not a Father, not a Spouse. Or perhaps more like unto Allah of Islam, a god who is as Master to slave more than anything else, one who says only “Do this and you will have that; do not and I give you nothing, no grace of mine.”

Given what Christ revealed so fully, that God is Father and that he himself is Spouse in one sense, Brother in another, how can belief in a god who does not truly embrace us in a family relationship of unconditional love be belief in Christ and what he teaches?

But the antimormon posters are now attempting to wear you down, so you will leave the forum. That is my take on it. 🙂
Well whyme, I see your purpose here is to attempt to silence critics of mormonism so that you can justify your make believe religion of pseudo Catholicism/Mormonism. The religion you have made up in your head.

Lessee…there is this, and then you go on to insult and disparage both my beliefs, my faith and my intelligence.

Here’s a hint: Nobody ever changed religions because his own was sufficiently insulted.

Oh, and His name? “Christ” comes from the Greek Krystos, meaning ‘anointed one;’ thus saying 'Jesus Christ" is saying “Jesus anointed” or, as one our apostles wrote in a book published by us, “Jesus the Christ” or “Jesus the anointed one.” Many people resolve this by saying “Christ Jesus” or 'anointed Jesus."

We are well aware that His last name was not “Christ.” He was known as “Jesus of Nazareth” or “Joshua” or Yeshua, or Jesus Ben Joseph…

What on earth was your point with THAT condescending and snarky comment?

You claim to have been a Mormon; I have no reason to disbelieve you, but since you were, you already are aware that we know this. So…why make that obvious and irrelevant point, since it happens to be a point that you KNOW we agree on?

Just as it always plays out:
Catholic states apparent fact.
LDS says it’s an insult
Catholic asks question: “Then tell us what you really believe?”
LDS gets angry and lashes out, stubbornly refuses to listen to any more “lies”

Don’t shoot the messengers.

Rebecca, there is no argument I could make that could prove my point (that you are misstating your objective just a bit when you claim to have 'no desire to destroy [my] faith." better than you just have. Have a nice evening.

That’s actually a great question, and it’s one I would very much like to discuss with you. Would you mind, however, if we put it off until the weekend?

First…I want to do some ‘gathering of resources.’ You look to be a debate opponent worth preparing for. I think it will be a very enlightening experience…if not for you, then for me!

Second, I am a Special Education teacher and I’m also taking classes…I honestly don’t have time to engage in the sort of debate that your question is going to require, not until Friday.

If you agree to this, I’ll begin a new thread on Friday specifically for this. I think perhaps…“The priesthood, covenant or contract?” would be a good title–unless you would prefer another one?

Mormonism Trying to Look More Christian

Issue Date: January/February 2008

Since Joseph Smith founded Mormonism, many changes have been made to make it look more Christian. As recent as 1978, Mormon leaders eliminated the ban on black men in their priesthood. The practice of polygamy was one of the things that got them in so much trouble with their neighbors soon after their founding. Joseph Smith had a couple dozen wives. Mormon leaders officially renounced polygamy in 1890 but splinter groups still practice it. Mormonism is constantly changing. Each new prophet has the authority to nullify previous teachings including the Bible.

In 1996, Mormon leaders reworked the official logo to put more emphasis on Jesus Christ in their name. Presidential candidate Mitt Romney attempted to look more “Christian” by stating: “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of mankind.” However, he added a qualification: “My church’s beliefs about Christ may not all be the same as those of other faiths.”

And those beliefs about Jesus are so foundational that they have not changed much since founder Joseph Smith wrote them. Romney is right. His “church’s beliefs about Christ” are radically different from “other faiths,” especially those who believe the Bible.

The Mormon Jesus is one of a bunch of gods who began as men and attained godhood in a “celestial kingdom.” One Mormon doctrine is summarized as follows: “As man is, God once was; as God is, man may become.”

This briefly describes a complex theology involving multiple gods inhabiting remote planets with spirit wives having spirit babies to inhabit the physical bodies of children born to Mormons on earth. A Mormon aspires to become one of these gods with his own planet, spirit wife and making spirit babies.
Could you tell me, referring to scripture, what defines a person as a Christian.

Paul

Is it Christian? In my opinion, they accept Christ as the way of salvation, so I think it is.

Could Joseph Smith be a prophet? I could be a vampire, but I’m not. Joseph Smith was charged with fraud during the founding of the church. So, do you believe him?

Smith was a crook, in my opinion, and sought profit. But he wasn’t exactly a prophet.

Is it Christian? In my opinion, they accept Christ as the way of salvation, so I think it is.
I do that, why doesn’t that make me a follower of Jesus, or does it, or is it just the appellation “Christian” you deny me?
Could Joseph Smith be a prophet? I could be a vampire, but I’m not.
There are such things as prophets, there are no such things as vampires. Possible vs. Impossible
Joseph Smith was charged with fraud during the founding of the church. So, do you believe him?
The apostles were thrown into jail by accusers, does that make them disqualified.
Smith was a crook, in my opinion, and sought profit. But he wasn’t exactly a prophet.
Could you point out the riches he amassed, or the carefree and lavish lifestyle he provided for himself as a result?

Paul

The apostles were thrown into jail by accusers, does that make them disqualified.
ummm, the apostles were jailed and martyred because they did not deny Christ.

JS was tried (and jailed) for fraud, and also had warrants for his arrests all throughout his life for fraudulent behavior.

Fraud is theft. Which doesn’t have much to do with the Apostles, unless you are calling them thieves.
