Thank you

13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesare’a Philip’pi, he asked his disciples, “Who do men say that the Son of man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Eli’jah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. 21 From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him and began to rebuke him, saying, “God forbid, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” 23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me; for you are not on the side of God, but of men.” 24 Then Jesus told his disciples, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. (Matthew 16:13-24 RSV)

Looking at the text in context, Our Lord is referring to Peter when he mentions him being the rock. It’s about the whole Petra/Peter and Cephas/Kephas thing that goes on in the Greek and Aramaic

Go to www.brantpitre.com, and download his “Jewish roots of the Papacy” for like 5 bucks. It contains the ancient Jewish understanding of Isaiah 22, and it pretty much blew my mind. It also makes it considerably more difficult to argue that Peter is not the rock that Jesus had in mind.

It’s about God revealing to Simon that Jesus is the way to eternal life and Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter meaning {rock} and gave him the key’s to tend to the flock until he comes back.

Does the verse of John 1:42 take place before or after the events of Matt. 16:18

thank you

Jesus is speaking directly to Peter in the following verse.

(Mat 16:18) And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Let’s replace the “rock” with the name “Peter”.

(Mat 16:18) And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this Peter I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

If Jesus was talking about “this” Peter, this would indicate another person, other then the first Peter that is mentioned in the verse.

Did the gates of hell prevail against Peter from that moment onwards?

That thou art Peter, and upon you Peter I will build my church - works for me.

The gates of hell have not prevailed against the church – Peter however is human and not perfect and goes on to do the work of our Lord as was his (our Lords) perfect plan.

Bless you, and may our Lord show his you his plan for you aswell. - Peace - blue. 😉

Why couldn’t “THIS” be used as emphasis? Christ could be emphasizing that it was built on the Rock of Peter’s ministry, the Papacy, and therefore is using “THIS” to add importance.

What truly matters when disputes about words come up is what the original texts say. And the play on words on the Greek clearly support Peter as the Rock.

**Here’s your real answer.
**
Let’s translate into modern English:

And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

And I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

Now a quick summary of these passages:

Jesus asks who the public thinks the son of man is, multiple answers are given. When Jesus asks Peter says that Jesus is the son of man. Jesus tells Peter he is blessed since he has been told this by God and not other people.

Jesus responds to Peter by telling Peter he knows who he is, and upon this rock I will build my church.

Now you’re probably going… what!? What’s the rock!? Well, let’s look at some old languages, shall we?
Latin word for rock - Petra
Greek word for rock - Petros
The name Jesus gave to Peter? Cephas, which means stone in Aramic.
The origin of the name Peter? The latin word Petra.

In case you don’t follow, Peter is interchangeable with the word rock.

So… upon Peter I will build my church.

Thank you and good night! 😉

Another very important point:

God has personally changed the names of key people when they are blessed by Him for a special work.

Such changes in name had great significance in Judaism and should place particular emphasis on Christ’s changing of Simon’s name to Peter (and forming the Rock).

The Keys given to Peter as noted in other Scripture have a similar reflection from OT Scripture.

Aside from the compelling explanations pertaining to the use of the words Petros vs. petra (that you would not call Peter “Petra” because that is the feminine form of the word), what supports the truth that Peter is the Rock is that IMMEDIATELY after the “and on this rock” verse, Jesus compliments that verse with GIVING PETER THE KEYS. In other words, Jesus elects to apply two images of authority to Peter at the same time, which makes sense.

Who would give the Prime Minister’s Keys to? The human foundation of the Kingdom. Peter is the Prime Minister…UNDER Christ the King.

The events of John 1:42 took place at their initial meeting
40* One of the two who heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41* He first found his brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). 42* He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him, and said, “So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter *).
However, John was written several years after Matthew. One of Saint John’s purposes in writing his gospel was to clarify any misinterpretations and ambiguities in the other three.

Jesus is unworthy of faith if:

He gave the keys of heaven to anyone other than the rock.
He made anyone other than the rock the shepherd of His sheep.
He invited anyone other than the rock to come to Him on the water.

Peter is rock that is what his name means. So what Jesus said was Your name is Rock and upon this rock I will build my Church. In your example it does not indicate another Peter. The term this points back to or modifies the first Peter. Why did Jesus change Peter’s name to rock?
