Is Priest's pennace for me enough?

When I go to Confession one of my Priests tell me to sit in the Tabernacle and just meditate before God. After Confession is this penance adequate?

When you go to confession and the priest gives you a penance, of course, it is enough. That is the prescribed penance for that particular time you went to confession. TRUST in the sacrament. TRUST that you are truly forgiven. I have struggled with this myself.

But you can always do more by spending time with the Blessed Sacrament or Praying for the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

Priests have the authority in Confession so yes, the penance from your priest is adequate.

Your priest acts in the place of Christ. He has the authority to impose this penance so be obedient and accept it.

Penances are often something concrete, so that we can objectively know we’ve performed it, but I’ve had a priest give me something more vague before as well. If I recall it was spending a little bit of time before the Tabernacle. It’s fine.

If you don’t like a penance for whatever reason, you are allowed to ask the priest for another one.

It is Christ Who forgives in the person of the Priest. Hear ‘Father’ but think ‘Christ.’ If a penance seems light, it reflects Christ’s mercy. Be thankful that your penance is not commensurate with your sins! If it was, martyrdom would not be sufficient. But, is spending time in the presence of Christ truly a penance? Here is the Lord’s brilliance shown in that He will transform penance into eternal blessing.

Now, you can assign yourself additional penance, according to our Lord’s words in Matthew 5:41 “Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him for two miles.” Use great prudence if you do this, as you can assign yourself too much and fall into despair when you find it impossible to keep.

I am just wondering why you think it might be inadequate (you must have some reason), and why asking a bunch of anonymous people on an internet forum, however charming, intelligent, knowledgeable and good looking as we undoubtedly are , is preferable to discussing it with your priest, who knows your situation in detail and thought this was just the right thing for you.

He was probably nervous to ask the priest, or thought about it in retrospect, so he turned to the incredibly handsome people on CAF to answer the question, so he can be referred back to his priest-confessor.

It’s better than asking nobody at all. Well, I guess unless we gave him really bad advice, like “you need to spend 147.5 seconds in front of the Tabernacle in order to receive absolution. Violation is an excommunication that can only be lifted by the Pope. Get thee behind me, MainBrain.”
