Is sex before marriage truly immoral in EVERY SINGLE circumstance?

*Fornication * carries a religious overtone and I don’t think that it is helpful term to use, in the context of consensual sex between two adults. IMO the Church is being overly judgemental here. I have said before, I don’t understand why any religion wishes to get involved or make judgement on what is a private affair.
God is the Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier of us all. He is interested in everything about us, so that we can love him and be with him for all eternity. It is easy to lose sight of that when we put ourselves first. (the fall.)

That is an interesting view.

I don’t know why you can’t accept that marriage is a natural institution at its root, not a religious one. It exists precisely because sex is not simply a private affair, because sex is the way babies are made, and without holding people responsible to their children then society would fall apart. All Christ did was raise the natural institution to the dignity of a Sacrament and bestow it with supernatural grace.

I think marriage is great. Well I am not an exhibitionist and I prefer to keep it private. 🙂

Teen pregnancies yes, but this is not true about abortions, let alone all abortions. Married women have abortions too.
Thank you for posting my thought; that magic wand would, however phenomenally reduce abortion.
And again, yes, sex before marriage is truly immoral in EVERY SINGLE circumstance.
It is not what Jesus asked of us.

That is an interesting view.
Why wouldn’t God be interested in every aspect of our lives? Married relationships are merely imperfect reflections of Trinitarian love. The love of the Trinity is not just between Father, Son and Holy Spirit but between all three Persons of the Trinity and the people He created as His own. If the sexual relationship means so much to spouses, it means even more to God for He cares more about every aspect of our lives than we care for them ourselves.

Then why are you here?

The question was asked in a religious context, therefore the use of a word that carries a religious overtone is perfectly appropriate here. The OP did not come here saying, “Let’s have a completely naturalistic discussion about whether or not consensual sex between non-married adults is okay.” She asked if, from a Catholic standpoint, premarital sex is always wrong, and she is getting mostly answers from a Catholic perspective. It is not, as you say, “an interesting view” that God is interested in every aspect of our lives; it is the Catholic view.

The Church is not being “overly judgmental”. The Church is being the Church. Don’t go to a Catholic forum and knock Catholics for believing what the Church has always taught. There are lots of gray areas and negotiables in life that Catholics come on here and debate, like whether or not mothers of young children should work outside the home, how to dress modestly, etc. This is not one of those debatable issues in which we are allowed to do whatever we think fits our situation.

Wait. Do you genuinely think that God has no role in our private affairs? So is God just a public figure then?

Check out my post #17 outlining the impact of ‘consensual sex between 2 adults’ and how it impacts a nation.

I think you need to ask yourself why an unmarried couple would have sex. If the answer is that they are 100% committed to a lifetime together, have a deep love and respect for one another, want to share the most intimate part of themselves with one another, and they want to have children together - then they should get married. If it’s for other reasons, then obviously the relationship is not mature or serious enough to warrant risking a pregnancy, much less the emotional damage and shame when the inevitable breakup occurs.

By the way, I’m not one to say that everyone who has had sex before marriage is not actually in love and not actually really and truly committed to one another. I’d even go so far as to say that I believe there are plenty of people who have premarital sex in an attempt to demonstrate real love for one another. An attempt, however, does not make for success. One cannot truly demonstrate real love via premarital sex. It’s a cheap, watered-down and distorted reflection of marital intimacy.

My own best friend lived with his then-fiancee before they married. And, right before the wedding, he admitted to me that they both regretted it and wished that they waited. It’s all confessed and in the past and they’re now a tremendous married couple and wonderful parents. His wife is even a NFP instructor!

So while their story has a happy ending, the start was rougher than it needed to be had they simply waited until they were married.

The PURPOSE of sex is two-fold… by design. It is for BOTH unity and procreation… those two purposes of sex cannot morally be divided… because God created them to both be there, by design.

So, while you may totally have the “unity” thing going on… “procreation”, as we all know, should be saved for the Sacramental bond of marriage, where God has given us an outward sign of that commitment between man and wife… so that the world can know that when these two are coming together to be one that the child will be raised in the fullness of truth.

It’s all interconnected.

So yeah… it’s always wrong.

That’s not to say it’s easy… many people sin… but *admitting *it’s wrong, *seeking *forgiveness, and *doing your best to move forward without sinning *again, is required none the less.

Of course not, that is voyeurism. Who wants to be watched, 27/7 this is not ‘1984’ 🙂

I don’t think he is very public either. Too me he is still a mystery.

Whether or not you want God to be fully apprised of all you do, say and think - He is. God is not all that mysterious to those who are properly catechized 🙂

God created sex… He has a say.
God created sex FOR THE PURPOSE of procreation (basically for ALL creation… plants, animals… everything procreates)… not just anything, but for the procreation of ETERNAL SOULS!!! Human beings are the only “creations” of God that have SOULS… so yeah, He has a say in that! 😉
God ALSO created sex FOR THE PURPOSE of uniting two… because, well, it’s awesome and feels really great and makes you fall in love more and all that.

So… if God did both… then they’re both good.
Those two aspects cannot and should not be separated.

Interesting point. But how, when a couple just fancy a night in with some Barry White and a fine wine 🙂 are they meant to contemplate the implications of your God and I suppose every other god, before getting ‘jiggy with it’ - Are you serious? Talk about a passion killer.

If Catholics can contemplate all that and still ‘rise to the occasion’ then I applaud every last one of them:choocho:

No, like I alluded to in my post above… Catholics are called to get jiggy with it… and ENJOY all the aspects of unifying love…
WHILE AT THE SAME TIME remembering the AWESOME responsibility we have been given through the ability to create a human soul.
