Is sleeping with someone of the opposite sex a sin?

Matt. I urge you to take a little time and go back in just the short time you have posted here and see the evolution of your justification. You have been someone who relies heavily on the guidance and preaching of Fr. Mike, you started with questions about purity and self mastery and now are confused with another sexual question that has a really easy logical and Holy answer that you are trying to see if you are the exception to the rule. You need to have a really well formed conscience right now with sexual issues or you will fall. Good luck to you friend! I recommend some time with the blessed sacrament and thinking about this…
This is a simple simple answer and you might be clouded because of emotions or hormones or the confusion of lust.

Simply put, stop putting yourself in situations that will lead you AWAY from Christ.

sure you COULD, and you could also stand on the freeway with your eyes closed and hope you won’t get run over. In short- one thing will lead to another, slippery slope.

Or…as has also been said anymore…:

“Remember…Whatever happens in that bed, STAYS ON YOUTUBE…!”

There is about 100 miles between a chaste kiss and making out. Making out is foreplay. It is for marriage.

This literal sleeping included sexual acts but not sex
ALL sexual acts outside marriage are a sin of grave matter. It would appear from your various posts you know this and your opening post was deceptive as you said “literal sleeping”. Nobody on the planet would take literal sleeping to mean sexual acts!!
You are also deluding yourself if you think sex only means intercourse.

Matthew - do you feel you have the answer to your question? I could be wrong but I feel like part of you wants someone to say ‘it’s ok as long as x,y, z ‘. Everything you have done can be forgiven but you need to be sorry first and it’s difficult for you to be sorry when in the grip of this infatuation and a lot of new feelings. I am worried you are going to be badly hurt by this. You’ve gone from 0-60 with someone in a very short time.

Something I have noticed as a single guy is that removing yourself from the near occasion of sin is really to stay away from sin.
When you allow yourself to be in a near occasion, we tend to stop thinking with sound mind and begin thinking only with emotion. If you were in a bed with a girl, I would find it hard to believe neither of you had thoughts of impurity running through your mind.
If she initiated intimacy would you have been able to stop? I don’t think I could. Thus I just have stopped putting myself in that situation.

Also Matthew are you prepared if this girl was to fall pregnant - could you support a child and enter into marriage with this girl ? Right now you are infatuated with her and would probably say yes, but the reality is very different. Would probably mean leaving college, and a total life change. Also if you sleep with with her and then she ends it you cannot possibly be prepared for the damage that could do to someone like yourself, very sensitive with a tendency to scruples. I know I probably come across like this scolding person but honestly I’ve been there and it just sets you back and makes you turn away from God often times because deep down you know this is wrong.

You’re already going too far “under the blankets,” or even over the blankets, as far as I’m concerned. As to cuddling, certainly not, because you’re putting each other in a risky situation: near occasion of sin and sin of scandal, if you prefer Catholic terminology. In general, avoid the horizontal position at this point.

I think it helps that you were in his shoes as a young man (name removed by moderator). For me, again sorry if TMI, even when I met my now husband I would get upset after stuff had happened because my conscience (and God I am sure) was telling me this was wrong. He agreed that we would stop till we got married and although this wasn’t done perfectly I got myself under control then took it all to confession when I converted. If this girl is the right person Matthew she will help you to do the right thing not lead you further into difficulties. There’s a great line in The movie Vanilla Sky ‘Don’t you know that when you sleep with someone, your body makes a promise whether you do or not’. That line wounded me for years and God used it to help me realise what I was getting into

Why do we keep having threads where people don’t believe placing themselves in a near occasion of sin IS a sin?

Just part of being human I would say. We are typing ‘can I? Should I?’ And our souls are actually saying ‘help me, support me, stop me’ all part of the Christian walk where we rely on each other

Catechism
II. Respect for the Dignity of Persons

Respect for the souls of others: scandal

2284 Scandal is an attitude or behavior which leads another to do evil. the person who gives scandal becomes his neighbor’s tempter. He damages virtue and integrity; he may even draw his brother into spiritual death. Scandal is a grave offense if by deed or omission another is deliberately led into a grave offense.

2285 Scandal takes on a particular gravity by reason of the authority of those who cause it or the weakness of those who are scandalized. It prompted our Lord to utter this curse: "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened round his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea."85 Scandal is grave when given by those who by nature or office are obliged to teach and educate others. Jesus reproaches the scribes and Pharisees on this account: he likens them to wolves in sheep’s clothing.86

Completely agree! But when someone is saying should I stop they are already involved and it’s not that simple. If it was as simple as just stopping we’d all be perfect
