Isn’t it interesting…

a museum owns a priceless work of art and it is “preserving culture”…

but the Church owns a priceless work of art and people accuse it of “hording wealth”.

We live in a world of double standards.
you can go to a museum and look at everything in there any time you want.
how about the vatican?

Actually, that’s not true. Museums rotate exhibits and such all the time.

The Vatican probably allows the public to see just as much as any museum. Anyway, the Vatican is not the only art preservation which the Church does. There are countless works of art and literature which have been preserved by the Church and without the Church they would have long ago been lost. Not only that, but some of the greatest works of art were commissioned for the Catholic faith. No museum can match that, certainly.

Society owes a great cultural debt to the Church.

yes, to other museums. they dont say were showing this for just right now, and then no one else will see it again until we feel like it.
museum artifacts are always on display, somewhere.

Not necessarily. They actually cycle things back into their stores for a variety of reasons, including research and maintenance. Museums do not have infinite floor space, you know.

I think you are just out to find a “gotcha”. You can give up now because I am not going to play that kind of game. The Church displays massive amounts of art for the public every day. Your pedantism will not change that.

you can only find a “gotcha” if youre not already right. if i wanted to play games, i would make it apparent, so as to make the victim of said gameplaying look all the more dumb. i was simply talking, and saying that a museum goes far beyond whatever exhibitions the vatican does, and im right, they do, and they always will.

gotcha!

I have already explained, in a previous post, that the Vatican constantly lends its holdings to museums and traveling exhibits.
The Vatican lends artifacts to museums and travelling exhibits all the time- specifically for the purpose of making their holdings available for all to see.

Google “Vatican Exhibits” and you’ll see that there are numerous exhibits going on almost constantly.
So what’s the real issue here?

It could be that you just have a misperception about how the Vatican handles its exhibits.

Or it could be that you think the Vatican should give all of its holdings over to other museums because the Church is somehow less qualified, less competent, or less willing than other museums?

Or maybe you just have an axe to grind regarding the Church, and your completely untenable position here just happens to be the grinding stone you’ve chosen.

I vote for #3.

The last time I checked, Vatican City and the museums contained therein are open to tourists of all faiths and nationalities.

First, you don’t seem to understand that the Vatican operates actual museums in Vatican City- here’s a blurb from a random travel agency site.
The Vatican Museums comprised of 12 large complexes with over 1, 300 rooms, making it one of the largest museum complexes in the world. It’s not possible to explore all the museums and their fascinating collection of arts and artifacts on a single tour.
Secondly, the Vatican Museum complex is one of the largest in the world. According to the Vatican’s own website, the Vatican Museums attract OVER 4 MILLION VISITORS EACH YEAR.

It is clear that you simply have no idea what you’re talking about.

And for your edification, here’s a list of the largest museums in the world- notice that the Vatican Museums are listed near the top.

it is clear you simply have no common sense in how the world works.

Tell that to the millions people who will be going this year, or the millions of others who will be attending the exhibits on loan from the Vatican all over the country.

its actually number two, but i love hearing from the judgmental and self-righteous. tell me more! do you have a news letter?

oh, and your vote doesnt count for anything. the church has done nothing to me, personally or to anyone i9 know. now, some of its more vile congregants, like some i see post on here, offend me, and make me think if their god is the one true god, then the world is a evil husk, fortunately, there have also been many genuinely good people on here, who let me know that my faith isnt pointless, and that i should ignore those horribly crude people. as im going to do right now.

You’re right- you clearly don’t have an axe to grind.

I was obviously mistaken. Sorry for any misunderstanding.

no problem! when someones as condescending as you, misunderstandings abound! im sure its par for course.

Actually, the Vatican has a LARGE exhibition on loan to several museums in the United States right now called “Vatican Splendors”. The large collection of art will be on view in Cleveland, St. Petersburg, San Antonio, and St. Paul.

Here’s the website so you can order tickets and go see it.
vaticansplendors.com/ Hurry though, it ends this week!

The “Vatican Treasures” exhibit also toured the US in 1998, and the Vatican Fresco exhibit came to Lubbock, Texas in 2002. The Vatican makes a point to have its exhibits routinely tour the world, just like the program the Atlanta Museum of High Art has with the Louvre right now, or the Prado had with the Birmingham Museum of Art. It even brings exhibitions to smaller cities sometimes that don’t have access to major museums (much like the Pompeii or Terracotta Warrior Exhibits that are touring the US right now).

Now, as far as museums always having everything on display, this is simply false. I’m a professional historian at a private college in the South, and as someone who’s WORKED in museums and archives around the world (including the National Archives, the Library of Congress, and the Royal Palace of Madrid), I can tell you that most museums rarely have but the tiniest fraction of their work on display. Most of it is in storage, accessible only to researchers. Only the best goes out permanently, and a small portion of the rest is rotated. For example, did you know that even as large as the Louvre Museum is in Paris, that only 35,000 of its more than 350,000 objects are on display? A shockingly large percentage of their items have NEVER been on display, either (and probably never will be). The Vatican is NO different than any other museum, other than it’s one of the world’s largest, and may actually give people MORE access to it’s works than most museums!

You just now figuring that out?

Correct, but when talking about the Catholic Church demented conspiracies are alot more interesting then basic facts 😉

Except that you are wrong and have been utterly proven so this thread.

Should I say gotcha now?

Last time I visited the Vatican, there was a thirty minute wait to get in. So I’d say yeah.
