It seems when one prints an inflammatory statement as the above, there should be some source to back it up. Is this in the paper, the news, your day dreams or imagination?
In any case, the Pope is always in danger, Islam or no Islam. It is part of the vocation of Pope. Just as it is part of the vocation of all Catholics. Danger comes with the territory. But if citing a specific threat, please provide a fact to go with it. Thank you.

Keep in mind our late Holy Father John Paul II had an an assination attempt made on him. Like it was stated above it comes with the territory. I’m not surprised. Unfortunately, the muslims in the middle east have developed a reputation for this kind of thing. Yes, we do need to pray. We always need to pray for our Holy Father. :gopray2:

Somalia’s top jihadi cleric’s call for death:
Sheikh Abubukar Hassan Malin urged Muslims to find the pontiff and punish him for insulting the Prophet Mohammed and Allah in a speech that he said was as offensive as author Salman Rushdie’s novel The Satanic Verses. “We urge you Muslims wherever you are to hunt down the Pope for his barbaric statements as you have pursued Salman Rushdie, the enemy of Allah who offended our religion,” he said in Friday evening prayers.
“Whoever offends our Prophet Mohammed should be killed on the spot by the nearest Muslim,” Malin, a prominent cleric in the Somali capital, told worshippers at a mosque in southern Mogadishu.
“We call on all Islamic Communities across the world to take revenge on the baseless critic called the pope,” he said.

Is it illegal to put the weblink on this website so that you can link to it even if it is copyrighted?

Well, good question. Lets think back to the bullet JPII took.

Did we think he was in danger then?

Now, one asks if Benedict is in danger? Of course he is. Lunatics abound.

These people who view killing as the way, I’m not even sure they are actually Muslim, are they? No Muslim I know would call for the death of the Pope. I know that there are Muslims who respect the Pope.

Where are they? For a long time even after 9/11, I believed that there must be peaceful Muslims in the world that did not share the beliefs of the extremists, but now I wonder. I really wonder.Obviosuly you don’t know all the Muslims being quoted in the press, or the ones acting like rabid dogs on film…

That being said, I mentioned on another thread that I am moderately confident in the Holy Father’s safety, at least in Rome. Just to give you an indication: I was in St. Peter’s before 9/11 and there was little or no visible security, which really surprised me given the attempt on John Paul’s life. Then I went the following year & the square and all points of entry to the Vatican were heavily guarded by not just the Swiss Guards, but also the carabinieri (Italian federal police) as well as furnished with metal detectors. God help you if you kicked up a fuss about having your belongings or your person searched. Furthermore, the air space above the entire area of Rome has been closely patrolled for years. However, I’m sure most of us are stepping up our prayers for the Holy Father, as well we should.

Ok, here’s some quotes to demonstrate that some Muslims ARE speaking out in favor of the pope. (This was written BEFORE today’s apology.):

"Turkey’s top Islamic cleric, Religious Affairs Directorate head Ali Bardakoglu, welcomed the Vatican statement.

“He says that he respects Islam and didn’t want to hurt the feelings of Muslims. I find that a civilized position,” said Bardakoglu in an interview posted on the Web site of Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine."

and…

British Muslims sought to calm the situation.

““We welcome his apology and we hope now we can work together and build bridges. At the same time we would condemn all forms of violent demonstration,” Muhammad Umar, chairman of Britain’s Ramadhan Foundation, a youth organization, told Sky News.”

From Al-Jazeera:

Ismail Haniya, the Palestinian prime minister, called on Palestinians on Sunday to refrain from sectarian strife.

“All Palestinian citizens must prevent all harm to all Christian churches on Palestinian land. Our Christian brothers are citizens of Palestine. They are Palestinians,” he said.

I will also add that several Muslims posted editorials on Al-Jazeera denouncing the violence and explaining the full statement of the pope.

Rolltide,

Hamas is not speaking out in favor of the Pope, they are simply trying to keep the peace at home. See:

“In Hamas we do not view the statement attributed to the Pope as an apology,” said Sami Abu Zuhri, spokesman for the militant group which controls the Palestinian government.

The head of the Hamas-led government, Ismail Haniya, denounced the attacks and called on Palestinians to exercise restraint.

And in the West Bank, the radical Islamic Jihad took steps today to guard one church in Jenin against reprisals, witnesses and the group said.

If I were in charge of the Pope’s security, I’d probably redouble it. I think there is a real possibility he could be in danger.

Guys, let’s have faith. Don’t worry about it. Our Lady protected John Paul II when he was shot at in 1981. We need the intercession of Our Lady more than ever before. Our Lady will protect the pope. Don’t worry.

Are you suggesting that the radical muslims burning effigies and what not are perhaps really JW’s or Mormons desquised as Muslims? They are very good at conning us if that is the case…

Yes, but he was still SHOT and I’m sorry, protection or no, I don’t think we can assume that bullets will not kill. Or that the possibility of Holy Father having to take time out of his schedule to heal from an injury and live will make us think we should rest easy.

Has Bush said anything about this? I stay away from the TV these days.

No, but Vladimir Putin, Hamas, and the Palestinian Authority have all condemned the violence and urged restraint.

From Michelle Malkin’s website:

This is misleading.

Hamas hasn’t condemned the violence although they have urged restraint. However, they have condemned the Pope’s remarks and have not accepted the apology.

To my knowledge, President Bush has not talked about the issue.

Hamas did condemn the violence within Palestinian territories, I’ll see if I can find the link again. You are however correct in that Hamas did condemn the popes remarks. I don’t think the Palestinian Authority took an official position.
