This is where my belief is more or less the opposite of yours and apparently meltzerboy’s. The souls in hell cannot experience love, since they have rendered themselves unlovable. For an unlovable soul to experience love is like a square being a circle. So it is not a question of God not allowing them to experience His love, rather it is the fact that they have freely rejected all possibility of such experiences. For God to give them the experience of His love would be mercy, and in such a case they would not be in hell, but they have rejected all Mercy. So God does not love them. God cannot love them any more than God can make a square a circle.
In contradiction to what meltzerboy advanced, I submit that in fact the opposite is true. Indeed it is not kind to expose them to the brilliance of Almighty God, and the fact is that they are being tormented in fire. Scripture says, “our God is a consuming fire.” (Hebrews 12:29, Deuteronomy 4:24) It is impossible to go anywhere that is “outside” the Presence of Almighty God. Psalm 138:8 If I ascend into heaven, thou art there: if I descend into hell, thou art present. Therefore God is present in hell, but He is not present in His Love, but only in His Justice. Yet, God is Simple, with a capital ‘S.’ Thus it is the selfsame God who is Present to the blessed in Heaven in His Love, and to the damned in Hell in His Justice, without contradiction. It is not something different about God, it is something different about the souls in Heaven or Hell.
I submit that the reality of hell-fire is that it is, in fact, the Glory of God. Since there is literally no place at all from which God’s Glory is absent, it is in Hell, too. The simplicity of the difference is that in Heaven, they love God, and in Hell, they hate Him. God, for His part, is not loving the souls in Hell, He is destroying them. He is burning away from them all their imperfections, exactly as He does for a soul in Purgatory, the key difference being that after the imperfections of a soul in Purgatory are burned away, there is something left, that goes to Heaven. Whereas, for a soul in Hell, there is literally nothing at all in them that is not imperfect, so everything is burned away. And since it is the soul itself that is finally being burned away, the process goes on forever. That is why Scripture warns, Matthew 10:28. . . do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.
Utterly false. You are right, it is nonsense. Hell is defined as definitive self-exclusion from God’s Love and Mercy. It is not defined as self-exclusion from God’s Presence, because that is impossible. God is present to the souls in Hell in His Justice. In fact, they can never forget God in Hell, they only wish they could. There is no “special grace” given to the souls in Hell. That, in fact, is an insult to the very concept of grace. Special graces are granted to souls who love God, for carrying out specific tasks of Love. There is no Love in Hell; there is no grace in Hell; there is none of God’s benevolence, in Hell. There is only torment.
There is a word connected with a fallacy, “omnibenevolence.” It is modeled, obviously, after omnipotence and omniscience, but the Church does not teach that God is “omnibenevolent.” Why? Because God’s benevolence does not extend to the souls in Hell.
Yes, entirely different. And the whole difference is the presence or absence of Love.
