I saw this advertisement for an Islamic lecturer about the crucifixion of Jesus given by an ex Christian who converted to Islam. I found this picture to be very offensive to me as a Catholic because the Quran explicitly denies the crucifixion. I found the use of the cross in this case very unsettling does anyone else here feel that way or is it just me?

Yes, but then I find every use by any Muslim – in a lecture, or here on CAF, or anywhere – of any figure, symbol, or concept related to Christianity in order to advance or argue for Islam to be horribly offensive. Whatever happened to “To you your religion, and to me mine”? (109:6)

Not in the least…there were “Christian writings” of the early church deemed “heretical” that also deny the crucifiction…it was probably one of these groups that influenced Muhammed to reach such a conclusion…it made sense to him…especially from a “Christian”.

The image seems to show a desert grave with a makeshift cross on top, suggesting that Jesus was buried there and did not rise from the dead. This is what muslims believe.

It is not particularly offensive; I have seen much worse from gays etc.

I see it as a mockery of our most sacred beliefs and symbols don’t you? My Muslim friend who posted this said that the Christians she spoke with said the picture was not offensive. I don’t see how any Christian could say this is not offensive.

It would take more than a poster like this to “offend” me…if one is not looking for offense…one usually won’t find it.

I don’t know anyone who goes looking for offensive material I certainly don’t and I certainly didn’t go looking for this picture.

Yeah I’m very much aware I have been studying Islam for years because I am learning Turkish as a second language so I have regular contact with Muslims.

Jesus is a messiah in Islam. It should be expected, without offense, for an effort like this to bring people to Islam. From their perspective, they are acting with utmost respect.

I see the cross used regularly by Hollywood, with the intent to be offensive. Where are the posts complaining about that? Is the difference that Muslims don’t control Hollywood?

the difference is that this Islamic advertisement specifically mentions Jesus the Hollywood advertisement you provided does not. Yes you call Jesus Messiah but Messiah has a totally different meaning in Islam than it does in Christianity because Islam explicitly denies the crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus. That is what this entire lecture that is being advertised is all about discrediting the crucifixion and denying the resurrection of Jesus that’s the difference and no one is saying Muslims control Hollywood.

Of course. Everything in Islam is a mockery of the sacred because Islam itself is a mockery of the sacred. By turning away from the true revelation of God in Christianity, by perverting it with a pagan’s (Muhammad’s) understanding, a carnal understanding, a worldly understanding, we should expect nothing less from Islam than the complete desecration of God and all godly matters. You may have heard it reported in Sahih Bukhari that Muhammad’s child bride 'Aisha once told him “I feel that your Lord hastens in fulfilling your wishes and desires”. Well?! That says it all, and not from any kind of anti-Islamic source. So to all those who would not be offended by Islam’s perversion of the Christ and the cross because, after all, they are just saying what we would expect them to say from their sincerely held beliefs, I’d hope that you would grant me the same understanding in not opposing my sincerely held belief that Islam is a sham invented for the glory of Muhammad, not of God. In that context, the perversion of what is holy (Christ and the cross) for the sake of the unholy (Islam) is absolutely offensive and vile.

In the books of Luke and Mark we are warned that it is better that those who would lead the little ones astray be thrown to sea, weighted down by millstones. Who are any of us but God’s little ones, and what does this Islamic presenter intend to do but lead his audience astray? I am concerned for the gullible who would not know what they are facing and in their quest to be open minded may be filled up with all kinds of Islamic baloney.

I don’t see this as offensive because I know the Truth. This image expresses the Muslim belief about Christ, I simply see it as incorrect. I also see this as a chance to share our faith. 1 Peter 3:15 comes to mind “be always prepared to give an answer to every one that asks you to give an account of the hope that is in you”. Let them know what we believe and why, that Jesus IS God and Man and Messenger
God Bless

That’s odd that you both got this belief wrong. In fact, Muslims believe that Jesus never died. A man who never died can’t have been buried.

600 years after the start of Judeo-Christian worship, Muhammad begins his own religion by rewriting Judeo-Christian history.

Judeo-Christian worship is far older than that. It was brought to its fulfilment when God became man, but it didn’t start with the incarnation. As Catholics we draw heavily on our Jewish roots and we should never forget that.

That’s the difference, are you serious? No one sees the cross without thinking of Jesus. I haven’t seen this movie, but 95% of R-rated movies contain numerous instances of Jesus’ name being abused. And, at least, Muslims don’t reference Jesus out of hatred for Jesus, unlike the case with Hollywood.

The difference is who is abusing Jesus’ name.

Without seeing the lecture, I can’t say what it’s all about, but certainly what you say will be included in the lecture. I suspect most of the lecture will be about trying to show how the Bible supports Islam, such as Jesus supposedly calling out to “Allah” on the cross.

Catholicism is Jewish?
Jesus and the Apostles were Jews. Jesus- God the Son - established a New Covenant that included all people (Jews and Gentiles). St. Paul’s mission was to the Gentiles (all religions outside of Judaism).

Our seven Sacraments originally began (or were prefigured) in Judaism - covenant relationships with God the Father.

Jesus is called a Paschal Lamb - the fulfillment of the Passover Lambs who were sacrificed by Jewish families at Passover and at Yom Kippur for the forgiveness of sins by the Jewish High Priest.

Jesus extended and opened those covenants to all people who believe in Him.

Christians are trinitarian monothesists - God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.
