Long story short: I was baptized Catholic, but after that never saw a church till my sister’s wedding 20 years later. 3 years after that and a bad breakup, something inside me which has always been there told me it was time to seek God. I have always wanted to go to church but never felt it was important to me.

Since then, I have Gone to church every Sunday and Holy day for 2 months, started praying the Rosary and began reading up on the Catholic faith. My plan is to go through RCIA in September. And I visit Catholic Answers many times a day.

I still struggle as I am a very critical guy. I write little journal entries , but this one I wanted to post as I hoped people here had this same struggle as I do. So here is is:

***"Is there a god? I find it frustrating and a little lonely to fight urges which seem so natural. To feel guilty toward someone you wonder if they are really there.

I pray, I go to church on Sundays and I try to honor God the best way I can. I see people receive communion and the Eucharist and no matter how much I want to see Jesus in front of me, sometimes all I see is a wafer. A tasteless wafer.

It makes me wonder if there is a God or am I beating myself up over seeing things that are not really there? Or over having natural but impure thoughts? I get so angry after I masturbate because I feel guilty for having no self control but at the same time I feel very good. It feels good.

Am I feeling guilty over nothing? Over a man made story? Or am I having correct feelings about the man who will judge my acts one day? I don’t know and it makes me so angry to try and live my life by a code I sometimes have a problem believing in.

Living life is about believing in something and trying to achieve it. Religion is even about believing in something and trying to achieve it. But what do you do when you have doubts? When you don’t believe?

It forces you to ask yourself the question; If there was no God would you choose to still live the life religion says you should, or would you live more of a life based on “feeling good” masturbation, alcohol, sex, lying. And never feeling guilty for doing such things because there is no god?

There is a part of me that would enjoy a life where I can have sex and not feel there are consequences for those actions, where there is no “God” to judge me.

But another side wants to be better than the norm in life. Better than the impulsive people who do not care about others and only about themselves.

So what it really comes down to is even if there was no god… Are the laws in the bible… Is feeling guilty for committing what the bible says are “sinful acts”. Is not wanting to live that type of life a bad thing?

God or not we should want to live better lives.

But it still makes me wonder… Is there a God?"***

Thank You

If there is not a God, what or who drew you back to the Church in which you were baptized but never attended? If there is not a God, what impels you to this agony of the spirit?

We humans doubt, sin, feel remorse, sin again and struggle on. God knows what we are – and loves us anyway. Just pray for the grace to understand and accept.

Luke 11, 9
“And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

Is there a God? You have four choices:
  1. Everything around you is an illusion. Only you exist and everything else stems from your existence. You have to figure out how you got here because only you exist so all the resources are you.
  2. Once there was nothing. Then all of a sudden there was something. Yes, something came from nothing.
  3. There was an eternal universe. Matter had no beginning. It always was and just continues to change. Left alone most things decay or diminish but in this case left alone this eternal matter turned into an organized planet.
  4. There is an uncaused first cause. This eternal uncaused first cause existed from all eternity and the effect of this cause was creation of matter and life. This uncaused first cause we call God.
Now there is no one that I have spoken with yet that can give me a fifth option. Ponder all four and which sounds most feasible? Think of the complexity of the universe and of the single cell. Think of the order of the periodic table of elements. One last thought. It takes more faith to not believe in God because then you would have to pick one of those other options. It’s so much easier to believe in a Creator and really makes the most sense. God Bless you and I will keep you in my prayers.🙂

P.S. The sense that you have of morality, is that conscious concern necessary if there were no God? I mean would the question really have any reason to come up?

There’s an old saying that goes “if God didn’t exist then mankind would have to invent Him”.

…and then there’s the Truth and mystery of God who said “I am I am”. And then there’s a promise from God’s Son found in Matthew 7:7 and Life revealed in the Gospel of John Chapter 1…please take the time to look it up and read the entire chapters!

God Bless You,

I have to agree with teachccd, if there is no God then there is no such thing as a “better” life. There must be a God in order to have one type of life be morally “better” than another. Generally, one could say if there is no “God” then you would be your own God and all morality would be subjective and therefore a delusion.
Don’t worry though, trust me, there is a God. He knows your trying and he loves you. Pray to him for help with your doubts. You should check out theology of the body for the philosophical reasoning behind the churces teaching on fornication. When you fully internalize the reality of what the theology of the body teaches this will help, but the biggest help is turning away from yourself and trying to love God as much as possible. If you fail he always forgives you.

Very well said.🙂

“There must be a god to show that one type of life is better than another”

???

No. Based on Governments laws and social pressures like masturbation is gross could be enough for people to base what is right and wrong.

When we are kids we are taught “do not take from the cookie jar”. We do not think not to because we are god, we think so cause mom will yell at us

I can somewhat see your struggling. From your journal writing, you missed a very important part, and that is “If there is a God who created the whole universe, including me, how should I live my life to please Him, to show that I love Him?”

In your daily struggle, ask of Him how much He loves you, you will begin to learn how to love Him more.

In the Bible, the book of Mathew - chapter 25: 34-40 God told us how to love Him.

"Then the king will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’

Then the righteous will answer him and say,
‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?
When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?
When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’

And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’"

So far I have received three answers saying the same thing. “Then what created the universe” or some such thing.

A common answer I see in Catholic Answers to questions unknown is that God has not and will not impart all the knowledge he has to us.

But could it not be possible that the beginning of the universe scientifically also had unanwsered question that inst currently solved but one day will be?

At one time people thought it was God who had the universe revolve around us till science proved it different.

Will one day science prove everyone who said “Only God could create the universe”, will they be proved wrong.

It is also just frustrating to see more good Catholic based answers in the “Oral Sex” thread than a thread asking to state why you believe what you do.

Will you be risking your life to live a life with lust and all flesh desire until the day you find the truth about God? We right now live on Earth, we know very little about it. We have a brain to think , to prove things or disapprove things, yet we can’t even understand totally how our brain works.
It is also just frustrating to see more good Catholic based answers in the “Oral Sex” thread than a thread asking to state why you believe what you do.
You see, even if there are less replies to the thread “why you believe what you do”, it does not mean people are not interested in telling you their believe in this thread. Look around in other forums. There are many answers to different questions. Their answers are proofs of their believing.

It is not only about believing in God, but also about living your life as Christ-like.

All I know is that my Catholic faith makes me a happier person. I believe there is a God and although my faith is strong I also have my doubts. Everyone does. However, I know I will be a happier person overall through my Catholic faith and have a more fullfilling life. Even if there is no God then it seems my life would still be better off with my Catholic faith than without it but I fully believe that there is a God and repress my doubt. Oh, and all the feel good things and stuff that are considered morally wrong doesn’t bring happiness. They are only temporary fun times that go away quickly leaving one to feel down regardless of relgion or morality.

I really like that answer. I just wonder how I get over these doubts when I look at the blessed sacrament. It just feels weird to pray and try and believe when sometimes I really don’t

"Is there a god? I find it frustrating and a little lonely to fight urges which seem so natural. To feel guilty toward someone you wonder if they are really there.
The sexual urges are natural, in the sense that nature assures the continuance of species through this. However, we have been made in God’s image, and this spiritual aspect of our being elevates nature’s forms of communion to the spiritual realm. Therefore, the sexual act becomes a holy act among us humans, and so it is not to be desecrated, that is, used for the purpose of feeling good only.
I pray, I go to church on Sundays and I try to honor God the best way I can. I see people receive communion and the Eucharist and no matter how much I want to see Jesus in front of me, sometimes all I see is a wafer. A tasteless wafer.
I have never once seen nor felt the presence of Christ during the Eucharistic ceremonies myself. However, I also never felt anything** special** while eating nutricious foods as opposed to junk food…in fact, junk food tastes better. But I do believe what I’ve been tought, and so, I try to eat things that will enhance my sense of well being.I do this because I have** faith **in those who teach us what foods we ought to eat and what foods we ought to stay away from.
It makes me wonder if there is a God or am I beating myself up over seeing things that are not really there? Or over having natural but impure thoughts? I get so angry after I masturbate because I feel guilty for having no self control but at the same time I feel very good. It feels good.
Just try to wonder why you feel guilty in the first place; as it seems natural to feel good in having sexual experiences it seems also natural to be disapointed, or to feel guilty if no other forms of communion was exchanged during such an experience. There must be a reason for this; either spiritual, psychological, or both.
Am I feeling guilty over nothing? Over a man made story? Or am I having correct feelings about the man who will judge my acts one day? I don’t know and it makes me so angry to try and live my life by a code I sometimes have a problem believing in.
I think the guilt is just as natural as the urges felt in the beginning. For us humans, the sexual act was elevated to an act of love, something that other animals do not experience, and, so our reaction towards such an act will be different somewhat from other animals.
Living life is about believing in something and trying to achieve it. Religion is even about believing in something and trying to achieve it. But what do you do when you have doubts? When you don’t believe?

These are good questions; try to think whether such feelings of guilt or empriness would still exist if you were an atheist. My personal answer is that you would still continue to have such feelings of emptiness within after having an empty sexual encounter…that’s within our nature.
There is a part of me that would enjoy a life where I can have sex and not feel there are consequences for those actions, where there is no “God” to judge me.
But another side wants to be better than the norm in life. Better than the impulsive people who do not care about others and only about themselves.

You clearly are soul searching and my personal advise is never try to stop questionning yourself. Keep the Faith.

If you look at the definition of , you’ll see that definition #3 is An exaggerated trust in the efficacy of the methods of natural science applied to all areas of investigation, as in philosophy, the social sciences, and the humanities.

Now, you can believe that there is a scientific answer for all of reality but there is no way you can back this belief up with scientific proof.

Positivismstated that the only authentic knowledge is scientific knowledge. But, how do we know that positivism is true since it’s not concluded via scientific inquiry?

I really like that answer. I just wonder how I get over these doubts when I look at the blessed sacrament. It just feels weird to pray and try and believe when sometimes I really don’t
Well you always are going to have doubts so don’t worry about that. You don’t have to get over the doubt. All you can do is put your trust and faith in God and in what you believe. It might seem weird but why not just say say a prayer about how you feel. For example, tell God that you are not sure if he exist or not and that you feel really weird in your current situation. However, because you want to believe and have faith you are doing it anyways even though you feel weird about it. Ask God to help you feel less doubt and grow to be more comfortable with it but even if you never do, just have faith. As mentioned, for me, God or no God my life is better with my Catholic faith so I don’t worry about the doubt I have.

Finally, it is unfortunate but some people have to try much harder to believe in God since they honeslty don’t feel God in their lives much if at all. Many of these people therefore become atheist or change religions. However, some still against everything they feel maintain their faith even though they don’t understand it or see its benefits now. How much more blessed will these people end up being since it was so much harder for them to overcome their doubt and believe? The point is to never lose faith and if it is harder for you it might be more of a blessing in the end if you maintain your faith.

…But it still makes me wonder… Is there a God?"

Hi hlmem,

I’m a little like you; I need more than faith to believe in God. And I think I’ve found it…

If you trust history, you will understand that the Old Testament (OT) was written centuries prior to the New Testament (NT). Yet, the OT is filled with stories that parrallel with Jesus in the NT. (Unfortunately, Muslims believe that our bible has been corrupted… But I believe history shows that our bible is preserved with much accuracy. And I don’t want to discuss that further here; Start a new thread if you must.)

Who could inspire such a book as the OT? Who could predict with acuracy the stories about Jesus centuries before they occurred? Only somebody who is above time could inspire such scriptures as those found in the OT. Only God is above time. Therefore, I have no doubt there is a God. 🙂

I just wish that everything I like wouldn’t be so illegal, immoral or fattening. 😦

May I be permitted to answer at least part of your question from my OWN experiences?

gods? There are many…too many!! God there is but ONE!

Bodily urges are in my view ‘natural’. They are many and necessary for the survival of the species. In that sense, they are God-given. But the Lord did tell us that 'some evil can only be purged by ‘self denial’. It is not easy. When you do not achieve the ideal, DO NOT beat your self up, simply kneel down and make a good confession. God in my experience always listens to a repentent heart.

You ownder if they are really there? I have had ‘real life’ mystical encounters with the Holy Spirit. I can testify that HE IS REALLY THERE!!!

How others receive communion is upto them. It is a very personal encounter. He comes to you as a very special person unique in all His creation. He is personal to you. Stick with it and you will go on to enjoy Him in ways that only YOU can. No one else, just you, a personal meeting between God and you.

If you think it is just a tasteless wafer then tell HIm so. Tell him exactly how you feel. Tell him exactly how you want to feel. Talk to HIm in your OWN words, no one elses, just your own.

Before I pray, I praise Him, I examine my conscience [only briefly], I accuse myself in His glorious presence, I say I am sorry [and I am heartely sorry for my sins], then I thank Him for forgiving me. Then I tell him with passion how I feel, what is on my mind, what I ask for in the name of His glorious Son.

Then I thank Him for hearing my prayer. Now comes the tricky bit and I can only say try it and see…trust that He HAS heard your prayer and BELIEVE that HE WILL grant you what you ask. I thank Him for hearing my prayer and granting me what I have asked for.

It is astonishingly peaceful at that moment. It is very refreshing. I feel like I have been re-born. Then when He answers my prayer [which He always does-though not always what I ask for, He knows my needs better than I], I give thanks and praise.

Though we are often unfaithful, God is ALWAYS faithful.

Try not to doubt that He will give you what you ask. Thank Him for both hearing your prayer and giving what you have asked for, even before you have received it. It takes faith but it WILL work. We have Jesus promise for it. I also have my own testimony

God bless you

I felt so happy reading your post to know that there is actually another person out there who thinks exactly the way i do!
im having the eact same struggle, even the angry after effects of masturbation. I find reading up on cosmology (the study of the origins of the universe) helps my faith a little. I try to find out whether or not the universe is infinite or finite. Now why would i do this? simply because if the universe is infinite it had no beginning leaving little or no room for a creator or God. If the universe is finite then there basically has to be a God, and iv already done enough study on religion to know iv chosen the right one.

I come accross only one problem, all the famous astro physicists are athiest e.g Stephen Hawking. Although they cannot prove the universe to be infinite using empirical evidence, they present theories as if they were fact.

Im constantly losing faith and gaining it, due to the issues around me. Keep up the search for truth.

If there isn’t a God, you won’t be here today…
this site won’t exist
your computer won’t exist
the world’s not created.

Many of us tend to look back at our lives, and in the sadness and miseries, we cry out, “Where is God?!” or “God just don’t care about me”. Sadly, in happy times, seldom we see people crying out, “Thanks be to God!” or “Praise His Holy Name!”.

Everyone has a temptation to sin. the difference is this- We as Catholics are given the grace of God to RESIST it.

Seek the Lord when you are weary or tired… and bear this in mind.

“No temptaion has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted. He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” -1 Corinthians 10.13.

and if you are still not convince that God exist, I invite you to visit this site…
