not be sinful
You’re still disobeying your parents

Additionally, if your friends only socialize through d̶e̶a̶t̶h̶ ̶s̶t̶i̶c̶k̶s̶ cigarettes, find new friends

Meh, I disagree with that. Some of the best people I’ve ever met smoked.

And so did gk Chesterton and jrr Tolkien

To be fair, I think he meant if the ONLY thing bonding him to this group was smoking.

Against the will of their parents?
gk Chesterton and jrr Tolkien
Yeah, but cigarettes are a way different animal than cigars and pipe tobacco. The added nicotine and tar from processing is wayy more than that of cigars or pipes.

All of which are reasons cigarette smoking is a bad idea from a health standpoint, but I don’t think it’s intrinsically immoral or makes someone unworthy of friendship.

Certainly. But, if (as in the OP’s case) the smoking is a) against parental wishes and b) seems to be the entirety of the relationship (essentially the opposite of Chesterton’s and Tolkien’s style of smoking), I’d certainly say it’s not beneficial to the OP.

Nope. Cigarettes, due to their processed and factory-made nature, have way more nicotine, tar, and other harmful chemicals in them, as opposed to organic pipe tobacco or a quality cigar.

Regardless of anything I can categorically say that smoking is to be avoided at all costs.

When I started smoking at a very young age I felt normal until I smoked, after a while though I only felt normal when I smoked!

Who needs that! I struggled for decades with that habit and it affected everything I did, restricted venues I could go to and I was a slave to the addiction. When I finally stopped I felt so free of th burden I couldn’t believe the difference it made to my life. And it has affected my health in many ways.
All that…for what! Madness.

Smoking is an interesting phenomenon when it comes to the Church mainly because it comes from the west mainly as in tobacco use. I would say some may say it is a sin however some would also view it as an addiction which it could be just as alcoholism yet the Church uses wine to consecrate the precious blood.
Pope Benedict XVI was known to smoke Marlboros once or twice a day during his pontiff. Many past Popes, priests, and bishops smoked.
I say when it’s an addiction yes it is a problem yet it is a mental issue. The Church does not shun the alcoholic but tries to urge him to get help. Or illegal drug addicts for that matter.
So no in theory it is not a sin in that sense. Addiction can reduce moral culpability. Smoking an occasional cigarette or cigar is not a sin. It is when it is used beyond reason that is becomes a problem, just like alcohol or even food.

Don’t smoke. It’s gross and very bad for you

My mother is dying of COPD caused by smoking.
My dad, likewise, died in 2001, from lung cancer caused by decades of pipe smoking.

He quit a year or two before that, but it was too late. The damage was done.

Sounds like good old fashioned teenage rebellion.

As others have stated… there is some teaching that smoking in moderation is not seriously sinful.

These are more old fashioned views.

However disobedience to ones parents under the age of majority is usually considered a sin.

I don’t think anyone’s gonna stop you from smoking cause you are probably going to do it anyway with your buddies.

I quit for a while but I’ve been having cigarillos with my buddies lately.

Thing is I’m an adult.

And yeah I know it’s bad for me.

So I don’t think any of us will be able to convince you to stop but we are somewhat obligated to nag you and tell you what you don’t want to hear because you asked us.

Even father said no.

He said it to me too.

So good luck to both of us.

When I was young - I loved a cigarette - every now and then.
I found it relaxing…etc…but it does leave that terrible HELL FIRE smell of evil below.

I recall receiving the Eucharist - from the hands of a Priest - who smoked - lol
I still remember it - this was decades ago -
At my work place, no smoking on the property . Not even in your car.
You have to literally go across the street - to a segregated area.

Why does it matter if its legal or not, some things that are legal sinful like abortion. I want to know if there is a church teaching on this.
Father has already told you it’s sinful. Why do you keep pushing it? How about the Ten Commandments: Honor your father and your mother. And, You shall not kill. Smoking puts you on the road to suicide, it destroys and mutilates your cells, including your brain cells. I’ve seen so many people suffer horribly and die from lung cancer. Who would you choose to change your messy diapers while you’re laying in bed unable to breathe? Think of what that would do to your loved ones. Unlike decades ago, young people today are taught how dangerous smoking is, why would you even consider doing something so harmful to your body? Why? Use some common sense. And if you’re really going to enter into the seminary, you better learn some self control and more responsibility, right now, or forget it.

Obviously, being obedient to your parents isn’t enough for your decision-making process.

And following the law-- “with parental consent” – isn’t enough for your decision-making process.

Do you want people to smell you from a distance?

Do you want all your clothes to smell like stale smoke?

Do you want to spend all your money on something that burns?

Do you want to not be able to taste food?

Do you not care if no one wants to kiss a smoker?

Have you not seen workers huddled outside of buildings when it’s freezing, wet, windy, and snowy outside, hunched over their cigarettes on their smoking break?

Do you not care about long-term health repercussions? It takes, what, seven years for your lungs to clean out?

That’s the path you’re demanding to follow.

I have yet to meet a casual smoker. Everyone I know is pretty proud of themselves if they limit themselves to two or three packs a week. More often, they go through two or three packs a day.

If you can’t quit now, when you’re 16 and a social smoker, what makes you think you’ll quit when you’re 17? When you’re 18?

You might not have noticed, but you’re talking like an addict already. 😉

If it’s truly something you only do when you hang out with your friends, why not say, “No thanks,” and be done with it? If you’re not already addicted, what mandates your participation, even with all the above?

Against the will of their parents?
There is a question of what is reasonable given the child’s age. Generally back then sixteen wasn’t considered being as much a child as it is today. When I was a kid you had no problem buying cigarettes.
Nope. Cigarettes, due to their processed and factory-made nature, have way more nicotine, tar, and other harmful chemicals in them, as opposed to organic pipe tobacco or a quality cigar.
What makes tobacco so dangerous is smoking it. The harmful chemicals are mostly natural to tobacco just like they exist in plenty of other things that come from the ground. Nicotine itself isn’t harmful at the dosage levels you get, but it certainly is addictive.

Im not addicted lol, I have denied myself cigarettes already with friends, if I wasn’t concerned I wouldn’t have asked the forum. Ill confess to it tomorrow, thanks for the help.
