Is this a Sin? Smoking

Weed s like alcohol. Not a sin in and of itself but a sin if:
It’s illegal where you are, because disobeying just civil laws is a sin.
Used in disobedience to your parents while a minor
Used in access, so you become dependent on it, it causes harm to your health and/or you don’t meet your obligations in your state in life because of overuse.

Medical marijuana if prescribed by a physician for a valid reason would be fine if your parents agree.

Cigarettes, alcohol and pot have a potential to cause addiction, but not necessarily. I used to smoke for years and was never addicted, it was a social thing or I’d have one when stressed. I was an adult though so it wasn’t a matter of disobedience to law or parents. I also drink occasionally- not everyone who drinks is an alcoholic.

If you are trying to live a holy life and become a priest in the future, you should desire to stay away from all sin as much as possible, which would include cigarettes as a minor.

Trust me when I tell you it is always a lot easier to quit social smoking than it is as an addicted smoker. ALL addicted smokers started out as social smokers.

Like a lottery winner, there are a few isolated social smokers who did not eventually become addicted, but far and away, we all became life long slaves to this nasty, expensive, and devastating habit. I am 56 and started smoking in high school. I once quit for six years and gained 30 something pounds.

I have another quit date in October before insurance open enrollment. My father died in February of this year from lung cancer, my mother died in July of this year from congestive heart failure and Parkinsons. Both heavy smokers, both died before their time, thanks to nicotine addiction. I too will die before my time thanks to my addiction, but if I pray hard enough, maybe I will get 20 more years out of it. Who knows. This myth that your lungs get pink again after you quit? Rubbish as the English like to say. Your lungs might rid themselves of some phlegm.

PLEASE give this some serious thought and discernment. I would like to think my testimony might give you a fighting chance, that would make my plight a little easier. Please pray for me, that I might be able to quit as planned this fall, but above all Oh Priest in the make… remember that if you hang out at a Barber Shop long enough… your most definitely are going to get a haircut.

That being said it is not sinful , since nothing made by God is in and of itself immoral to consume, (1 Corinthians 10:25-26)
No that’s not true. The Church explicitly forbids drug use, for example, even though drugs are part of God’s creation.

Call me a heretic if you like, but I think the church needs to rethink it’s position.
