Why priest don’t marry:
CC version to make sure they are focused on their duties living a higher life.

World History guys with sons pass on their property. If priest don’t marry the church keeps the gold.

Crusades: I’ll admit I’ve not checked the official CC position, but I doubt that military conquest and fund raising to out do the last Pope is on the list.

Constantine (sp) CC First empire to become a Christian.

History the guy was a pagan and was probably “baptized” on his death bed while unconscious.

I’ll wager there is much more, but those are the ones I remember off the top of my head.
Celibacy according to tradition
Living a celibate life within marriage was not unknown in Jewish tradition. It was told that Moses, who was married, remained continent the rest of his life after the command to abstain from sexual intercourse (Ex 19:15) given in preparation the seventy elders abstained thereafter from their wives after their call, and so did Eldad and Medad when the spirit of prophecy came upon them; indeed it was said that the prophets became celibate after the Word of the Lord communicated with them (Midrash Exodus Rabbah 19; 46.3; Sifre to Numbers 99 sect. 11; Sifre Zutta 81-82, 203-204; Aboth Rabbi Nathan 9, 39; Tanchuman 111, 46; Tanchumah Zaw 13; 3 Petirot Moshe 72; Shabbath 87a; Pesachim 87b, Babylonian Talmud).

Elijah and Elisha were celibate al their lives (Zohar Hadash 2:1; Midrash Mishlei 30, 105, Pirke Rabbi Eliezer 33). When for the sake of the Torah (i.e., intense study in it), a rabbi would abstain from relations with his wife, it was deemed permissible, for he was then cohabiting with the Shekinah (the “Divine Presence”) in the Torah (Zohar re Gn 1:27; 13:3 and Psalm 85:14 in the Discourse of Rabbi Phineas to Rabbis Jose, Judah, and Hiya).

“if a person cleaves to the study of the Torah (i.e., dedicates all his time to it) like Simeon ben Azzai, his refusal to marry can be condoned” (Skulkhan Arukh EH 1:4). Rabbinic scholar Simeon ben Azzai (early second century A.D.) was extraordinary in his learning: “with the passing of Ben Azzai diligent scholars passed from the earth” (Sotah 9:15). He never married and was celibate all his life so as not to be distracted from his studies, and because he considered the Torah his wife, for who he always yearned with all his soul (Yebamoth 63b). He was an outstanding scholar (Kiddushin 20a, B.T.) and also renowned for his saintliness (Berakoth 57b, B.T.).

Other celibates
Jewish tradition also mentions the celibate Zenu’im (lit. “chaste ones”) to whom the secret of the Name of God was entrusted, for they were able to preserve the Holy Name in “perfect purity” (Kiddushin 71a; Midash Ecclesiastes Rabbah 3:11; Yer. yoma 39a, 40a).

Those in hope of a divine revelation consequently refrained from sexual intercourse and were strict in matters of purity (Enoch 83:2; Revelation 14:2-5).

The Trullan Synod (692 A.D.), also known as the Quinisext, determined that bishops should not be married, but marriage was permitted for deacons and priests before ordination. No marriage was allowed after ordination. A priest or a deacon could not renounce his wife on the pretense of piety, but sexual relations were prohibited prior to celebrating the liturgy, which usually meant the Sunday observance

Historians have long pointed to the Essenes as the forerunner to the Christians. It is known that early Christians took much from the Essenes they withdrew themselves to the desert to live in enclaves which might be called communes but which bear a significant resemblance to later monasteries. Essenes did not marry; they shared property in common; they ate all meals together; and they lived a strictly regulated life of study and prayer; and they held themselves to a higher standard of virtue than others outside their community

John the Baptist seems to have belonged to the Essenes

Celibacy of the Clergy
Speaking, for the moment, only of Western Christendom, the candidates for orders are solemnly warned by the bishop at the beginning of the ceremony regarding the gravity of the obligation which they are incurring. He tells them:

You ought anxiously to consider again and again what sort of a burden this is which you are taking upon you of your own accord. Up to this you are free. You may still, if you choose, turn to the aims and desires of the world (licet vobis pro artitrio ad caecularia vota transire). But if you receive this order (of the subdiaconate) it will no longer be lawful to turn back from your purpose. You will be required to continue in the service of God, and with His assistance to observe chastity and to be bound for ever in the ministrations of the Altar, to serve who is to reign.

By stepping forward despite this warning, when invited to do so, and by co-operating in the rest of the ordination service, the candidate is understood to bind himself equivalently by a vow of chastity. He is henceforth unable to contract a valid marriage, and any serious transgression in the matter of this vow is not only a grievous sin in itself but incurs the additional guilt of sacrilege.

:rotfl:teancum, this is extremely weak. Hilariously so.

About Constantine: it’s not a secret that he wasn’t baptized until he was on his deathbed. And he was baptized by Arians! gasp

So the fact that CC facts and world history facts don’t agree is just fine. Yet the same people want to prove there religion is right by those facts.

yup that is laughable.

Are you talking about the Constantine thing? I don’t think the CC teaches differently about him from what I just told you. I first read about this in an article written from a Catholic viewpoint. Facts are facts. 🤷

the CC version of this is the same as you quote history. we know he was baptized at the end by heretics no less.

is that all?

I hear very often evidence this and fact that. Is that really all the CC has going for it. That’s all I see being talked about here is a selected version of history.
Teancum,
  1. The Real Presence of the BODY and BLOOD of Jesus Christ!
    Need I say More.
Now why do you devote your time here at this Catholic Site, is it becasue the LDS does not have much to offer? Is that why you are here?

What is the evidence this and the evidence that regarding LDS, I know, Fact is, not much, cause I see you devote your time here so much, that one day Lord Willing you will become Catholic.

No offensive but the devil will be ice skating long before I’d become catholic. The LDS has tons to offer. Sadly many people can’t get what we believe right and often misrepresent what we do believe.
I’m here to stand up for what is true. while I’m here however I am trying to better understand the CC much as I’m trying to better understand Islam or any other religion.

Inside Mormonism: What Mormons Really Believe
Isaiah Bennett

Do you know what Mormons believe about God, Jesus Christ, and salvation? If not, you’ll be shocked when you discover their true beliefs.Incredibly, Mormons believe God was once a mortal man living on another planet. They also believe that if they’re good Mormons, they’ll become gods of their own world someday.

That’s just a small sample of what you’ll learn about Mormonism when you read this fascinating new book, Inside Mormonism: What Mormons Really Believe. It’s written by a former Catholic priest who converted to Mormonism and then reconverted back to Catholicism once he discovered the errors and contradictions in Mormonism.

Now he’s dedicated to defending the Catholic faith and explaining the truth about Mormonism so other Catholics won’t make the same mistake he made.
After reading this comprehensive volume, you will possess an enviably-thorough understanding of Mormonism. And you’ll have a solid reference that you can lean on to resolve virtually any dispute over the facts about what Mormons believe.

That’s a lot of trash talk coming from a guy who belongs to a religion of people that wear “magic pants”😉 . I’m still not quite sure what that is all about. The first I’ve ever hear of that waw on an HBO channel. Not saying who so as not to advertise.

And a few miricles??? Agno Theist That is the biggest understatement of the year. Have you ever experienced a real miracle?
edited to add expressions of good will if possilbe.

so rather than addressing the question you attack. 👍 thats a great way to help people understand you faith.

The issue is where is the faith and belief of the everyday catholic?
See previouis post and check my historical posts since joining. I’m an prodigal son returned after a long journey away from Catholicism. I have mounds of amazing stories with picitures to show… Strange stories that appear to be God revealing himself to me over time. But if you have an agenda, you wold never listen to an ordinary man like myself. I’m sure you probably have a bag of tricks up your sleeve to “disprove” everything that can possibly be said about faith. I am ashamed of some of my prayers that were answered. I’m am overwhelmed with joy over the others that were answer and amazed at the answers I never expected.

No. I am the counter evidence that you woul have to engage in personality assasination in order to eliminate me as that which yoiu say you seek. I’ve experienced so many miricals in my life that I am overwhelmed with questions as to why did God allow this to happen to me. I feel for your loss. The loss of not understand Him for who He is and not for who you want Him to be.

No offensive but the devil will be ice skating long before I’d become catholic.
Many converts to Catholicism had started out saying the same thing. Don’t underestimate the power of the Holy Spirit. 👍

So help us understand, then. Is this

inaccurate? What’s with the undergarments?

So I was right, while preparing post number 94 you were preparing a personallity assisination against me. You’d make a great Jesuit…😉 [in case you don’t know, there are lots of attacks of the Catholic Church accusing the Jesuits of being some kind of assasins for the Church]. Ask me real questions that aren’t the obvious answers. You’re original questions comes across strange and meaningless.

I think it is quite straight froward. In the bulk of my conversations here I most often here that historical facts prove the CC to be right. I find it odd that a people professing beliefs in things that can not be supported by history would make history their main point of validity.
