Is this the beginning of the end for communion in the hand?

Hmmm…but if you’re taking communion on the tongue, aren’t you sticking your tongue out at Jesus? I just don’t get why it is wrong tto take it in the hand. Unless Jesus personally fed each apostle by laying the bread on their tongues that original night? Somehow, I doubt it happened that way. I think there’s a bigger chance of dropping it if it is taken on the tongue.
The host should not be touched by unconsecrated hands…the apostles were the first bishops of the Church, they were not lay-people. Christ gave them the power to teach, to sanctify, and to rule the members of His Church.

Read about the use of the paten which is held under the chin of each person in the event that it may drop.

Yet the Blessed Sacrament has been touched by unconsecrated hands going back to the Apostles and the primitive Church.

It may be preferred (by some) that this not happen but it has as part of our history and earliest traditions.

Hi Eilish Maura,

God bless scouting, but may I suggest that you make your sign, “Scouting **IS **Youth Ministry” a smaller size? The size of the sign and the large bold “IS” comes across as shouting on the Internet. It also draws more attention to itself than your posts. God bless.

So the Baltimore Catechism teaches that God the Father died for our Salvation?

That the Blessed Sacrament is the body, blood, soul and divinity of God the Father?
By your questions you are suggesting that Our Lord Jesus Christ is not God. Reread the post I made on the Blessed Trinity.

Please show where I have even the slightest hint of denying Jesus is God.

LOL like that is a bad thing???

How are tongues any more consecrated than hands? Sticking your tongue out looks disrespectful and silly, not holy.

If one approaches the communion rail with the intention of “sticking one’s tongue out” disrespectfully, then I suppose it is. You are not supposed to have that intention.

And the “tongues not more consecrated than hands” argument is just silly, and used as a last resort by communion in the hand proponents. Would you suggest blowing the Sacred Host down the throat with a tube? Why stop there? Are stomachs more consecrated than hands?

I am really sorry to see so many people are so poorly catechized.

Don’t stick the tongue out like a lizard, just open your mouth and stick your tongue out as far as your bottom lip. Don’t show lack of humility by being stubborn and fighting the proper way to receive Our Lord, just because you are afraid or self-conscious.

This blurring would have us killing God on the cross.

Basic Catholic doctrine does not blur all three together - each Divine person is separate.

**Jesus offered HIS death - not the Father’s death, not the Holy Spirit’s death - for the redemption of mankind.

The Father did not send himself to die for our salvation nor did he send the Holy Spirit to die for us.**

We recognize the Real Presence as the true and real Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ - Son of God and 2nd member of the Blessed Trinity.

I would like to see where the Church teaches that the Real Presence is the Father and the Holy Spirit as well.
The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is God offering God to God. Be very careful, you cannot separate the Trinity as you are doing.

Please supply the proof of that statement.

Here is a small section:
The respect and reverence due to the Holy Eucharist was to be exhibited in a particular manner whenever the faithful came into contact with the particles of the Blessed Sacrament. There were several customs observed by the early Christians in their dealing with this sacred object, which would appear strange to us at the present time. They were inspired by the fact that the Eucharistic Christ was looked upon very much as He was when walking upon this earth. As the people then mingled freely with Him, handled Him and touched Him, so likewise the Christians of the early ages felt entitled to come into direct contact with the species of the Holy Eucharist, which contained Christ. Thus, whenever they approached the table of Communion, they received the sacred particle in the palm of their right-hand. They held it there, blessed themselves with it, and then placed it on the tongue. They were permitted also to take the Blessed Eucharist to their houses, so as to be able to commune, whenever they were unable to be present at the religious services, either on account of illness or on account of severe persecution. Finally, they were authorized to carry the sacred particle with them on journeys that were dangerous, so as to have the all-powerful protection of their Lord and God. On all such occasions particular care was taken to handle the Blessed Sacrament with the utmost care and respect.
Several of the writers already mentioned, such as Tertullian, Origen, and St. Cyril of Jerusalem, warn the faithful not to permit any particle of the Sacrament to drop on the floor, while they were holding it in their hand at Communion, because that would be. a profanation inflicted on the holiest of objects. Moreover, Tertullian condemns very severely those Christians who touched the body of the Lord at Communion with the same hand with which they manufactured idols for the false worship of the pagans.
When the Blessed Eucharist was taken to private homes, care was to be observed that no dishonor should come to it; and it was presumed that its custodians should be pure in soul and body. Tertullian, in his work Ad Uxorem, recommends to his wife not to remarry after his death, unless the man of her choice were endowed with the Christian faith. If she were to marry a pagan, there would be the possibility of a profanation of the Holy Eucharist, which she might wish to keep at home. St. Cyprian in his work De Lapsis tells of a perverse Christian who assisted at a pagan sacrifice, then went to the Eucharistic service of the Christians, received the body of the Lord, and carried it away. On his return home he opened the hand in which he was holding the sacred particle, and to his astonishment he beheld that he was carrying ashes. He speaks also of a woman who was keeping the sacred host in a small case at her home. When she tried to open the receptacle, she was stopped from taking hold of the particle by flames of fire that came out from it. In both these examples the man and the woman were unworthy of receiving the body of the Lord; their souls were not free from sin. The stories were told for the purpose of admonishing others to be always pure of soul when handling or receiving the body of Christ.

We also cannot blur it all together the way some are suggesting here since it also denies an aspect of the mystery of the Blessed Trinity.

Who’s blurring? The Holy Trinity is indeed a mystery which is beyond our human comprehension. But the Sacrifice of the Mass is God offering God to God. It is not just Jesus offering Himself.

But Jesus is not just another name for God.

The Church recognizes the individual persons of the Trinity while recognizing that there is One True God.

To say the Mass is God offering God to God turns the persons of the Trinity into cheap name changes and it denies the importance and mystery of the Incarnation with the vital role it plays in our redemption.

From another area of CA:

Tertullian
“While keeping to this demurrer always, there must, nevertheless, be place for reviewing for the sake of the instruction and protection of various persons. Otherwise it might seem that each perverse opinion is not examined but simply prejudged and condemned. This is especially so in the case of the present heresy [Sabellianism], which considers itself to have the pure truth when it supposes that one cannot believe in the one only God in any way other than by saying that Father, Son, and Spirit are the selfsame person. As if one were not all . . . through the unity of substance” (Against Praxeas 2:3–4 [A.D. 216]).
“Keep always in mind the rule of faith which I profess and by which I bear witness that the Father and the Son and the Spirit are inseparable from each other, and then you will understand what is meant by it. Observe, now, that I say the Father is other [distinct], and the Son is other, and the Spirit is other.
. . . I say this, however, out of necessity, since they contend that the Father and the Son and the Spirit are the selfsame person” (ibid. 9:1).

I didn’t realize I was being stubborn and fighting the proper way to receive our Lord, by receiving it by hand. I am very reverent when the time comes, and my hands are clean. It seems more natural to take it by hand than by tongue, since I’m not an infant being spoon-fed. I don’t mean any disrespect, but do wonder if people aren’t hung up on rules sometimes, sort of like the Pharisees were, and doing it for show rather than out of piety. A Holier Than Thou mentality, in other words.
