Is WoW a sin?

Wow! It looks like your imagination (which is probably the reason why you liked table-top games) was extremely powerful! May I ask: what did you mean when you said that you consulted “visionaries,” which helped you discover that your intimate toys were possessed by demons? Did you actually consult some kind of oracle which relayed this information to you? Or did you mean that you had the vision yourself?

To me, though, this story seems really sad. Obviously, you don’t play Warhammer by yourself, after all. You play it with others. It is something of a social hobby. Yet, your over-active imagination, combined with the condemnation of your mother, plus your religious beliefs led you to actually believe that there were actually evil spirits inside your toys. So you destroyed your hobby to get rid of the evil imaginary demons and felt better. But what about the friends you had playing Warhammer? I suppose you won’t be able to go over and play the game with them anymore, and will have to spend time with them in other ways. It’s a shame, really, that you allowed your imagination to
destroy a harmless hobby and a genuine social connection with other people. A pity.
If I felt the need to pity you I would, but I won’t since that’s rude and condescending. As ridiculous as you think I am, it would be even more ridiculous for me to defend any of what I said to you or clarify it any further since you’ve pretty much judged me as a loon or crazy person.

You are obviously not open at all to the reality of demonic activity in our day and age which Satan has available to him and the means he has at his disposal to tempt the faithful and lead them astray. Anything that can be used he will use, even a little model or an addictive video game. Why would anyone think he’d pull his punches when he hates us so much? Nothing is off limits for him, because anything can be a vice for anyone. If there’s room he’ll gladly take it whether the person likes it or not. From his point of view, the delivery system is irrelevant, it’s whether the bomb goes off or not.

The means may seem ridiculous or trivial to us, but to him it’s always viable. That’s why we need to pray and discern so much, especially the youth. He won’t hesitate to intrude on anyone’s affairs or daily lives. The gloves are always off with Satan, and the more people realize that reality, hopefully the more they’ll care to do whatever may be necessary to knock him out of their lives. If they do nothing, they’re asking for the strangle-hold.

I’m open to all kind of hypotheses, given sufficient evidence to demonstrate the validity of the claim.

Honestly, though, is it more likely that magical demon-creatures possessed the inanimate toys, whose only function was to provide enjoyment for you and your friends? Or is it more likely that your mother’s influence - who obviously condemned your Warhammer hobby - combined with your imagination caused you apprehension about your hobby and led you to genuinely smell and feel things that weren’t actually there?

Magical evil spirits versus psychology. The psychological explanation makes much more sense.

Edit: Also, I don’t think you’re any more crazy or loony than any other person. We’re all susceptible to our imaginations. I just think yours got carried away.

Knowing full well I can provide no evidence, especially on an internet board, what would you have me do? Summon the demon so you can talk to it? Even if I could do that, why would I WANT to?! It’s gone, and praise the Lord for that! It would never be enough for a doubting Thomas anyway. The testimony is what it is- spiritual in nature. There are some who will believe it because of their own experiences with spiritual warfare and/or their knowledge, research, and what prayer or God has revealed to them…or they won’t, and will choose to debunk it, which is their privilege as a CAF member. The fact they have an equal opportunity for either is what makes fair discussion possible and why I’m not upset by how you’ve spoken to me.

Could you tell me how much time you spend playing World of Warcraft and other video games?

My next question would be to ask how much time you spend in prayer, practicing corporal works of mercy, etc.?

Then I would suggest you compare the two answers. Is their an imbalance where video games exceed time directed to your faith? :compcoff: vs :signofcross:

Also, after finishing a game, after that last climatic battle what happens? Absolutely nothing well except you load in the next game and the battle rages on. :manvspc:

Did your life improve? Did you improve the life of someone else? Did you earn any grace in your life by playing World of Warcraft?

These questions come from a guy who was the best Donkey Kong player in the area growing up.

God bless
I agree. Some people can get a tad too obsessed with a game and occupy themselves with hardly anything else (My customers are a fine example of that).

However, it’s easy to get addicted when you have a life that always winds up leaving you stressed at the end of the day (kinda like mine -.-;; ). My take is that the more energy you pour out into working/studying, the more time you spend playing to relieve the frustration, and it becomes rather hard to squeeze anything else in between. 😊

** Is playing World of Warcraft a sin? What about other video games?**

Most things do not fall neatly into the two categories of “sins” and “non-sins.”

Most things are sins in some contexts, neutral in others, and even virtuous or a duty in still others. (Sex is one example.)

However, certain violent video games might desenstize a person to the idea of stealing, destruction, and even killing other human beings.

World of Warcraft might well be one of these. Grand Theft Auto certainly is.

I have seen people play it as a game, and it was fine, its not a sin. Its just a game. I have seen people though devote every minute of their day to it and slack off at school and friendships and start drinking and a whole mess of other things.

The only reason why this happens is because the game literally doesnt end because theres so much to do…so people can just keep going.

Its not the games fault, its the addictive personality/person’s fault. Just like anything, reading, eating, drinking, watching tv, internet, or whatever, if you sink into your whole life revolving around it, then yes, its a sin.

Is WoW a sin? No. It is not intrinsically evil. The content is generally harmless.

Can it become sinful? It can if you neglect your obligations to God and others, or if it becomes harmful to you personally. However the sin is in the choosing to neglect. I could sin by reading Philosophy to the point of neglecting my obligations to God and others as well.

I think my sig applies here. Abusus non tollit usum. Abuse does not take away right use, and a person who sins in his actions does not justify the calling it a sin for everyone.

chozzle,
I was abouit to ask, “what is WOW?”
I guess video games are okay, if it isn’t violent.
It also depends on your age. Are you a student? School always comes first. Daily prayer shoulfd be a daily effort too. Actually that should be first. Morning is best. 🙂

God bless,

Hello all

In regards to the wow
I personal do not see it as a immdite sin to play it. I personal play wow. If you are playing it for fun and not obessing and not causing you problems ( relationships deteriateing, not doing homework etc) your fine. Now if you are having these porblems then yes it would be a sin but if you play it the way it was intended as a source of fun then you are coool.

OOh also regarding the warhammer table top game. I would say that also is not nessaly a sin. I persoanl play warhammer and warhammer 40k and it is not bad. I know some the stuff is really dark and all but that general is really only the fluff. As long as you dont get to the point were your spending all your money on it and itt consumes your life you are fine playing it.

Jack Chick has a tract on how playing Dungeons and Dragons leads this poor girl into the occult, because playing D&D “taught” her how to do spells and turned her into a witch. And another girl in the tract kills herself because her character died.

“Okay, I roll and cast Fireball.”
“Your Fireball fails and the dragon kills you.”
“Oh, crud. Can anyone rez me?”
“Everyone want to roll and see if they can rez her? Sorry, no one can rez you. Okay, the rest of the party continues into town. Jen, you create a new character and meet us at the tavern.”

My sweetie, who was a Dungeon Master for about 15 years, says he’s never once heard of anyone becoming even slightly depressed because a character dies. Character dies, you make a new one. And the idea that any RPG game teaches someone how to actually do magic? That’s hilarious! It’s only the Christians that think that (and I thought only the evangelical Protestants), not the people who actually ARE involved in magic and the occult.

However, like someone else said, World of Warcraft couldn’t be more addictive if it were designed to be so by a panel of psychologists. I saw a cartoon that showed a police officer at the door with a toddler, saying “We found him wondering around.” The mother said, “OH! I wondered where he was … hey, will you babysit for a couple of hours while we finish this raid?”

Any games that involve white or black magic, violence / combat, sexuality, spells and curses should not be allowed by parents. Here’s why. First they are a type of addiction that the user is plugged into for large amounts of time that should be used in preparing our Catholic children to survive and thrive in this world. More importantly, it opens a door to unclean spirits that oppress its host. It creates a hook for the demon to attach and create emotional problems and who knows what all. The Colembine shooters were video freak’s that became demonized. Yes, that’s right. Once Celestial Beings created by God and now fallen who prowl the world seeking the ruin of soles.

I’m am not one of these; there is a devil under every bed type. It just is what it is.

“We believe in one God, the Father, Almighty, Maker of all things visible and invisible; and in the one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, begotten of the Father, only-begotten, that is, from the substance of the Father; God from God, Light from Light, Very God from Very God, begotten not made, of one substance with the Father, through whom all things were made, both in heaven and in earth; who for us men and for our salvation came down and was incarnate, was made man, suffered, and rose again on the third day, ascended into heaven, and is coming to judge the living and the dead; And in the Holy Spirit. And those who say: “There was a time when he was not”, and: “Before he was begotten he was not”, and: “He came into being from nothing”, or those who pretend that the Son of God is “of another substance” [than the Father] or “created” or “alterable” or “mutable”, the catholic and apostolic church places under a curse.”

What you say is partly true. However, one can play these games in moderation. I myself am a casual gamer. I think it’s common knowledge that a person who is overloaded with lessons/work will be arrive at the same point of mental unhealthiness as the game addict. The only difference is how they got there. One due to stress, the other due to obsession.

This, however, is along the lines of the irrational fundamentalist belief that “RPGs lead to Satan!” and should be avoided by every Catholic who values his/her sense of reason/common sense. I’ve played fantasy role-playing games like WoW for 7-8 years and running. I did not even have the slightest hint of any demonic experience through those years and neither have I now. The closest encounter I’ve had with any demons were with the virtual ones that I (along with the occasional party mates) would beat the snot out of. As for the Columbine shooters, you’re just taking the same leaf out of the book of those who claimed rock music was what drove those crazy punks. There has never been any real evidence of the connection between video games and murderous behavior (and I doubt there ever will be).

A spelling mistake that has me envisioning shoe-hating demons …

According to the FBI, one of the young man was a clinical psychopath who possibly had a messianic level superiority complex.

Healthy people do not become “demonized” by playing video games.

Oppps !!! Keep the vision though. They hate you from your shoes on up.

I hear you but please do hear me. I did not say video games period. I am not into it myself, but I am sure there are wholesome games out there. I specifically said the ones that include but not be limited to, black or white magic, violence / combat, sexuality, spells and curses. That type of thing. You know it when you see it.

You have to put all of that in context. There’s a reason why they have the ESRB you know. I don’t see any problem with WoW if you’re old enough to play it and do so with moderation.

Ya can say it’s kinda like drinking. 😛
