Ugh… Not the subjective bandwagon arguments again… :banghead:I understand this is your opinion, one that over 1 billion people on this earth disagree with.
Ugh… Not the subjective bandwagon arguments again… :banghead:I understand this is your opinion, one that over 1 billion people on this earth disagree with.
am not sure what each denomination does, but divorce in Christianity is very hard…Jesus said : Moses allowed you to divorce because of the harshness of your heart BUT IT WAS NOT INITIALLY THIS…so some denominations are a bit flexible “for the harshness of eople’s hearts”, but divorce is forbidden…Faith101 said:I didnt know Catholics werent allowed to divorce either, i thought that was only orthodox Christians. Do all denominations follow this rule as it is written in the Bible?
this is the Bible: OT and NT…am not asking you to argue about it, am asking: could God give contradictory teachings?Look, if this is what you believe…than i’m not going to argue with you about it.
i think i explained what the word “adulterer” means…it seems you didn’t get the analogy of divorce between man/woman and divorce between person/God which is called “spiritual adultry” cuz you left God for something else. This is our belief. I understand you believe that anyone who divorces is an adulterer, but we will have to agree to disagree on this one.
So my question is very easy : these are indeed 3 contradictory teachings between God and Allah. What God calls “adulterous”, and “sinful”, and “shameful”, Allah calls “permissible”. Marriage in Judaism/Christianity is very sacred, and it is compared to our marriage to God…i find the opposite in quran…polygamy is adulterous…marrying someone else to be able to go back to your first husband is agaisnt marriage sacredness…that’s why marriage in Christianity is called “the secret of marriage”…not cuz it’s a secret, but because it is like our marriage to God.
inJESUS said:am not sure what each denomination does, but divorce in Christianity is very hard…Jesus said : Moses allowed you to divorce because of the harshness of your heart BUT IT WAS NOT INITIALLY THIS…so some denominations are a bit flexible “for the harshness of eople’s hearts”, but divorce is forbidden…
So divorce is forbidden, but some denominations offer some flexibility on the issue?
Well, if I believed that the Bible was the direct word of God, unchanged…then that would make me a Christian, correct? You are talking with a Muslim, a person who does not believe that the words that reached Moses and Jesus exist in their pure form today. Even if the people of Moses were not allowed to divorce (which i honestly have no knowledge of) then it was for *them * b/c i belive Moses was sent to a specific group of people only…and therefore I am not obligated to follow the specific laws made for them.this is the Bible: OT and NT…am not asking you to argue about it, am asking: could God give contradictory teachings?
As for me, than God has granted us the ability to seek a divorce if the marriage is providing more harm then benefit.
I understand that your perspective is that relationship between human and human in the case of divorce is like the relationship b/w God and human.i think i explained what the word “adulterer” means…it seems you didn’t get the analogy of divorce between man/woman and divorce between person/God which is called “spiritual adultry” cuz you left God for something else.
From an Islamic perspective, no human-human relationship is akin to the relationship of the Creator and Creation. So again, we will have to disagree on this one.
There are some pious christians who had to get a divorce b/c their relationship with their Lord was being affected by the abusive (whether physically or emotionally) relationship with their spouse. I think they understand the concept that God is all-hearing, all-knowing and understands their specific state…as the Quran states regarding the issue of divorce. Does that mean that they are basically leaving God along with their spouse? I think you’ll have many Christians who will disagree with you.So my question is very easy : these are indeed 3 contradictory teachings between God and Allah. What God calls “adulterous”, and “sinful”, and “shameful”, Allah calls "permissible
Marriage is also sacred in Islam…but does not compare to a human beings relationship with their Creator…thats a bond unbreakable.Marriage in Judaism/Christianity is very sacred, and it is compared to our marriage to God…i find the opposite in quran
…
That’s your opinion.polygamy is adulterous
Many messengers, people chosen by God to relay His message to the people, were polygamous. Were they also adulterers?
I explained why the third divorce is made extremly difficult. If i havent explained correctly or if there is something you didnt understand, I can re explain. It is not violating the sacredness of marriage, it really is perserving it.…marrying someone else to be able to go back to your first husband is agaisnt marriage sacredness…that’s why marriage in Christianity is called “the secret of marriage”…not cuz it’s a secret, but because it is like our marriage to God
sorryUgh… Not the subjective bandwagon arguments again… :banghead:
Yes it was intentional. Your main argument here is how Moses’ teachings are very different from Mohamed’s…from which you conclude that they couldnt have come from the same God. You believe this came from a Prophet of God, and i mentioned why i’m reluctant to believe it.Faith, you went off topic by focusing on the word “defiled” instead of focusing on the teaching…was it intentional? i gave you a passage out of context thats why you don’t understand what is meant, but the teaching is clear.
Obviously if he divorced her 3 times, something is not right. The marriage isnt exactly the most stable…its too much for a woman to have to go through all that again…its better for her to accept a proposal from another man in hopes of finding a more stable marriage. But if he wants to remarry her, she MUST marry another man first…
this is your argument the way I see it “i have here in my book that God said this, and in your book your God said that…so your God is not the God of Moses”you just do not understand the context and tradition of what i quoted and it’s normal…but you completely disregarded the fact that God and Allah gave 2 contradictory teachings. Any idea how could this be?
Yes it was intentional. Your main argument here is how Moses’ teachings are very different from Mohamed’s…from which you conclude that they couldnt have come from the same God. You believe this came from a Prophet of God, and i mentioned why i’m reluctant to believe it.
Faith, you were reluctant because you focused on words out of context; i explained to you “why”,& “how” these words are used and their meaning/implication.
, something is not right. The marriage isnt exactly the most stable…its too much for a woman to have to go through all that again…its better for her to accept a proposal from another man in hopes of finding a more stable marriage. but if she wants to go back to her FIRST husbands, she MUST marry ANOTHER one IN ORDER to be able to do it. This is obviously a contadictory teaching.Obviously if he divorced her 3 times
.
exactly, unless we believe in a God who contradicts Himself.this is your argument the way I see it “i have here in my book that God said this, and in your book your God said that…so your God is not the God of Moses”
He did say it and you find the same theme of marriage sacredness, unity, divorce ecc in Jesus’ mouth. Hence it was universal…One man for one woman is Universal according to OT and NT…what i presented to you is from both OT and NT. Jesus did not come for some people but to all humanity.perhaps it was something abrogated, like remember when people werent allowed to eat pork? Or perhaps, from my persepctive, it was only for HIS people. Or perhaps, he never said it all.
you dont have to follow anything…my point was : God does not contradict Himself…He does not contradict His morality…if Allah does, then he is not the same Biblical God.I dont know…and it doesnt matter to me, i’m not the one who has to follow that ruling
Faith101 said:So divorce is forbidden, but some denominations offer some flexibility on the issue?
i really don’t know how it works with Orthodox or Protestants…the link i gave is to Catholic…
maybe you can look for the Bible corruption thread and explain why?Well, if I believed that the Bible was the direct word of God, unchanged…then that would make me a Christian, correct? You are talking with a Muslim, a person who does not believe that the words that reached Moses and Jesus exist in their pure form today.
i’d be interested.
b/c i belive Moses was sent to a specific group of people only…and therefore I am not obligated to follow the specific laws made for them. Moses allowed it “for the harshness of your hearts” said Jesus “BUT IT WAS NOT INITIALLY THIS”…so Moses had to cope with his sinful people but Jesus gave THE INITIAL wish of God. You don’t believe both?Even if the people of Moses were not allowed to divorce (which i honestly have no knowledge of) then it was for *them *
yes yes i understand this…if you read the link, in Christianity as well there are cases where divorce is necessary…but the idea of divorce is different coz when in islam it is for any reason in the Bible it is for very strict reasons because originally divorcce is not allowed. As for me, than God has granted us the ability to seek a divorce if the marriage is providing more harm then benefit.
I understand that your perspective is that relationship between human and human in the case of divorce is like the relationship b/w God and human.sure but it’s not my own idea but what God said for 3000 years. From an Islamic perspective, no human-human relationship is akin to the relationship of the Creator and Creation. So again, we will have to disagree on this one.
hehe you misused the meaning of the analogy…and yes in that case divorce is allowedThere are some pious christians who had to get a divorce b/c their relationship with their Lord was being affected by the abusive (whether physically or emotionally) relationship with their spouse. I think they understand the concept that God is all-hearing, all-knowing and understands their specific state…as the Quran states regarding the issue of divorce. Does that mean that they are basically leaving God along with their spouse? I think you’ll have many Christians who will disagree with you.
how can it be sacred when 4 women are allowed and what your right hand possesses and when divorce is easy?Marriage is also sacred in Islam…but does not compare to a human beings relationship with their Creator…thats a bond unbreakable.
…
most of them were NOT polygamous, including Moses and Abraham…Solomon for example was punished for polygamy. The OT is agaisnt polygamy and nearly all the prophets had 1 wife. Many messengers, people chosen by God to relay His message to the people, were polygamous. Were they also adulterers?
got to go now![]()
And i appreciate the explanation. …but it still doesnt change anything. Just because Allah in the Quran has made permissible divorce, doesnt mean that He is not the God of Moses.Faith, you were reluctant because you focused on words out of context; i explained to you “why”,& “how” these words are used and their meaning/implication
I dont understand what it contradicts. If you mean the Bible…then why focus on such a little topic…the very essence of Islam, tawheed, contradicts the Bible.but if she wants to go back to her FIRST husbands, she MUST marry ANOTHER one IN ORDER to be able to do it. This is obviously a contadictory teaching.
Again, thats your belief. Allah has made polygamy permissible, both now and in the past. You believe that those righteous slaves of Allah disobeyed Him while carrying His message? Thats hard to believe. He did say it and you find the same theme of marriage sacredness, unity, divorce ecc in Jesus’ mouth. Hence it was universal…One man for one woman is Universal according to OT and NT…what i presented to you is from both OT and NT. Jesus did not come for some people but to all humanity
Allah does not contradict Himself. Do some of the teachings of Islam contradict that of Christianity…then yeah, or else they’d be the same religion. But thats not God’s fault, that is the fault with the people who neglected to keep the purity of the message of the messenger.you dont have to follow anything…my point was : God does not contradict Himself…He does not contradict His morality…if Allah does, then he is not the same Biblical God.
Faith101 said:i really don’t know how it works with Orthodox or Protestants…the link i gave is to Catholic…maybe you can look for the Bible corruption thread and explain why?
i’d be interested.
Why should I have to explain it? There are Christians everywhere who dont believe the Bible has remained intact…from the begining, men were picking and choosing which books to include. This is an issue that needs to be discussed internally within the faith.
Either the Bible permits divorce or prohibits it. Which one is it?yes yes i understand this…if you read the link, in Christianity as well there are cases where divorce is necessary…but the idea of divorce is different coz when in islam it is for any reason in the Bible it is for very strict reasons because originally divorcce is not allowed.
What are the strict reasons in the Bible? How does an outsider know what is tolerable to the spouses and what they should be able to handle?
I thought divorce is prohibited?hehe you misused the meaning of the analogy…and yes in that case divorce is allowed
ask women in some parts of the world where women outnumber men, and they would tell you the mercy of polygamy.how can it be sacred when 4 women are allowed and what your right hand possesses and when divorce is easy?
I’m not sure about Moses, but Abraham had two wives, unless Christianity holds Abraham to be an adulterer.most of them were NOT polygamous, including Moses and Abraham…Solomon for example was punished for polygamy. The OT is agaisnt polygamy and nearly all the prophets had 1 wife
No way - our OT states that Sarah, mother of Isaac, was Abraham’s only wife - Ishamel was the son of her maid Hagar, definitely adulterous (although Sarah approved of the liaison, because she thought she and Abraham were never going to have children and wanted him to have a child with Hagar instead).I’m not sure about Moses, but Abraham had two wives, unless Christianity holds Abraham to be an adulterer.
wow.No way - our OT states that Sarah, mother of Isaac, was Abraham’s only wife - Ishamel was the son of her maid Hagar, definitely adulterous (although Sarah approved of the liaison, because she thought she and Abraham were never going to have children and wanted him to have a child with Hagar instead).
I don’t think it’s just us - I’m pretty sure the Jews believe Abraham was only married to Sarah as well, and not to Ishmael’s mother. So it was technically adultery - but it wasn’t unheard of - Jacob also bore children to his wives’ maids as well as to them - seems that childless women considered children born to their maids to be their own.wow.
You believe Abraham, the one who was willing to kill his son out of obedience to God, committed one of the gretest sins: adultery?
Come on people, say something believable.
Dear LilyM:Nothing incompatible with being sinful (or committing sins) and a great person - King David actually had a woman’s husband killed so that he could take her as his wife. THAT is a sin in anyone’s language - and the prophet Nathan gave him a good talking to as a result. David repented and obviously was forgiven, but funnily enough kept her as his wife
See this is where our idea of original sin comes in .
Actually the relative ages of Abraham Ishmael and Isaac aren’t clear at all - there is mathematical inconsistency all round in this story.Dear LilyM:
“I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abraham hearkened to the voice of Sarai. And Sarai Abraham’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abraham had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her husband Abram to be his wife. And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived.” (Gen .16: 1-4)
“And the angel of the Lord said unto her [Hagar], Behold thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael.” (16: 11)
“And Abraham was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abraham.” (16: 16).
"And God said unto Abraham, `As for Sarai thy wife, … I will bless her and give thee a son also of her: . . . . . and thou shalt call his name Isaac . . … . . which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year And Abraham took Ishmael his son and …every male among the men of Abraham’s house; and… circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him. And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. " (Gen. 17: 15-25).
"And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him." (Gen. 21: 5).
This brings out the contradictions of the Bible. It is evident that for 14 years the Prophet Ishmael (PBUH) was the only son of the Prophet Abraham (PBUH).
Now if the offering had been asked of the only son, it was not of Isaac (PBUH) but of Ishmael (PBUH), for he alone was the only son; and if the offering of Isaac (PBUH) had been asked, it would be wrong to say that the offering of the only son had been asked. [/INDENT]
Dear LilyM:Again, why would Abraham do this unless Hagar was not his wife and Ishmael was not legitimate?
How about you give me YOUR alternative explanation then instead of just criticising mine? The answer that makes most sense to me is that (as I said before) Sarah DIDN’T give Hagar to Abraham to be his LEGAL wife at all - rather to be his concubine and bear a child for him. This, as I said, also happened with the wives and wives maids of Jacob/Israel, all of whose children God recognised in spite of some of them being illegitimate.Dear LilyM:
You are talking nonsense.
Now my question is:
Why would Sarai give her maid–Hagar-- to Abraham, TO BE HIS WIFE, in the first place?
If I assume your theory then are you telling me that God promised to make “illegitimate” progeny of Ishmeal a great nation when same Torah is not even allowing a bastard into the congregation of HaShem upto to the tenth generation?
What a mockery you interpretation/reasoning is producing!!
Dear LilyM:It’d be interesting to see how sales of the Quran compare even to those of even just the King James Version of the Bible - I think the KJV would have to come out on top.
Dear LilyM:How about you give me YOUR alternative explanation then instead of just criticising mine?
