Isn't the Catholic worry over contraception slightly ridiculous?

I really do think that the stance over contraception is insane. It’s only the Catholic Church who obsess over the sin of sex. I don’t think any other Christian denominations are so obsessed.

There are so many bad things happening in the world. Starvation, poverty, homelessness, war and disease to name a few. But so many Catholics are far more concerned about the consequences of using shockcontraceptionshock. I mean there are so many wrongs in the world but God just happens to be incredibly concerned by who takes contraception. How ridiculous.

My ex-boyfriend, who was Catholic, agreed with me on this. He kept pushing me to take Contraception and completely ignored the official Catholic stance on the issue.

Don’t you guys think worrying over contraception, which does nothing aside from lowering the probability of STIs and Pregnancy, is ridiculous? What real harm does contraception do to anyone? It’s utterly stupid.

Or are you going to live out your life only having sex to have children or follow NFP (which often causes unplanned pregnancy and incredible financial strain).

You’ve got several assumptions here that are clouding your judgment. I used to think in a similar fashion as you do, but I will explain how I see it now: I don’t think Catholics are the ones who are obsessing about sex. We actually have very clear and simple guidelines for sex. It is secular society that is obsessed with sex, all the time, no boundaries, and no consequences, when such a thing is biologically impossible.

The Catholic position on sex is very simply defined as: God designed sex as the way that two people, through expressing their love for each other in the sacrament of marriage, bring new beings to life. If you want to use sex for any other purpose, or are not at a point in your life when you can have sex for this purpose, then don’t have sex.

Ta-da. Not complicated. But people try and get around this “rule” all the time, so that’s why you have the endless threads and scenarios posted on CAF about this situation or that, when it’s really quite simple. Sex is something holy in Catholicism, not something dirty. I mean, come on - it’s what makes entirely new people! That’s pretty special. It deserves to be treated with respect, not subjected to silly whims.

You might check out 1flesh.org for some great non-religious arguments on why contraception is not all it’s cracked up to be. Part of my conversion to Catholicism actually included first realizing that contraception was not doing me any favors in my own life for entirely non-religious reasons.

(Also, it is a common, although puzzling, argument from atheists that there is always something we or God should be “more concerned” about in the world. Certainly, some people will devote their lives to this cause or another, but we are called to act morally in all ways in our lives. 🤷)

Excellent answer

Also, here a fun tidbit you, ladymajestic, might now know about the pill. Did you know the pill is classified as a class 1 carcinogen by the WHO, same as cigarettes?

Nope.

And tis not a* worry*.

We are not* worried* over contraception --but we recognize it as the evil it is (as did other Christians until not terribly long ago).

That it it is contrary to the love, the nature and meaning of marriage – of the self gift and openness to wee little ones.

It is a lie at the heart of an act that is to be one of truth. An act of selfishness where it is to be self gift.

Are there other evils? Yes certainly. Even worse? Yes. And we recognize they are evil too in their various degrees (and work to overcome them…).

As to STD’s – such is avoided by not having relations outside of marriage…

And contraception has been involved many evils to persons and society. Persons are more used …selfishness is promoted…abortion when they fail (some even cause them)…sexual promiscuity is promoted…bringing indeed STD’s…etc etc

As to sex obsessed -I would suggest rather that often those who promote contraception etc can be rather more in that category-- of anyone.

They seem to not wish to ever abstain or have anything come between them and their desire to engage in sex …if anyone is obsessed with sex …it tis those who promote contraception. Do not let anything come between them and their desire. They even wish to divorce sex from part of its very purpose.

Do you really know of any Catholics who personally obsess so much over other people using contraception that they don’t do anything to help the poor and the suffering? I highly doubt it. 🤷 Also, the Church really does not obsess about this, its just one small teaching in the midst of many others. (most) Catholics who follow this teaching don’t go around obsessing about what does and does not make for immoral sexul activity. Honestly, we just live like anybody else would, but decide not to use contraception. Its not like we spend all day every day thinking about contraception, I know I sure wouldn’t think about it at all if I didn’t see other people bring it up all the time. When other people do bring it up, of course I’m going to give my opinion on it, but I hardly see why that would make me obsessed with it. 🤷

As to the idea that this truth is unimportant compared to other truths… so what if it is? If it is the truth then it is still important to accept it and to tell others about it, especially if they bring it up. 🤷

Also, just to clarify, the Church nowhere teaches that ever act of sex has to be procreative in the sense of attempting to achieve conception. All the Church teaches is that we shouldn’t mess around with ourselves or the beauty of sexuality by taking something that is correctly ordered and disordering it. This is actually a pretty universal principle. Don’t go break something that is already fixed.

And one last thing, the idea that NFP is unseccesful as a form of birth control and will obviously lead to unwanted pregnancies is actually not true. NFP is a form of birth control that does require self-control, but is actually really not that difficult to learn or to apply the principles. Now I know that there are some stats out there suggesting that NFP has a 24-25% failure rate, but those are actually outliers. According to Toni Weschler, a highly respected secular woman’s health speaker, the user failure rate accepted in medical literature is actually around 10%. She also goes on (in her book Taking Charge of Your Fertility) to explain an important observation about this user failure rate. When determining whether or not a user failure occured these studies all included people who charted, looked at their chart and saw that they were fertile, and then went ahead and chose to have unprotected fertile sex anyway. In other words, most of the “user failures” actually happen because a couple consciously decides that they are going to not use NFP as birth control. (If you are not already aware of it, the birth control part of NFP is not charting, but actually abstaining.) In other words, these people are having no problems in determining what they need to do in order to avoid pregnancy, and then they conciously choose to act in a way which they know will likely get them pregnant. In other words, if you want NFP to be a succesful form of birth control, all you have to do is refuse to have sex when you know you are fertile. NFP is actually highly effecctive, if someone actually uses it. The problem comes in when people say they are using NFP and then decide all of a sudden that they aren’t going to. And these people who make a conscious decision to not use NFP are being included as “user failures” in stats to make it look as though the method doesn’t work. I’m sorry, but if a person decides they will use condoms as a form of birth control and then goes ahead and consiously has sex without putting on a condom and gets pregnant I would not think that condoms are less effective because of it. Similarly I think it is unfair to claim that NFP is not effective since all studies with high user failure rates fail to distinguish between true user failures of the method, and pregnancies that occured because someone made a deliberate decision to ignore and not use NFP. This is why there are such huge differences in data about NFP success stats, with user failure rates varying from around 2% all the way to around 25%, some studies include people who deliberately decide to not use NFP while others don’t. I’m sorry, but its just not fair to blame the method with a pregnancy when the user makes a conscioius decision to not use the method. 🤷

Tell us everything you know about the Catholic faith starting with moral theology and then we can answer your erroneous charges.

A child is a gift from God. The Church teaches that sex is allowed only in marriage. Serial sexual partners who are untested for STDs represent a serious risk.

Of course you could also say that there are so many wrongs in the world, why focus on the homeless when there are people dying without healthcare? But that would be horrible wrong.

I would like to ask you who on Earth is helping the homeless and the hungry, the sick and the poor? The Catholic Church is the biggest helper of those in need, and it is not those who you see commercials on television asking for a £30 donation every week, though they most certainly are helping in some ways. (here is proof, even though they are American statistics they do apply worldwide, I could not find a British/Canadian website).

Why are we worried over contraception? Perhaps our imperfect love for one another and the future of our planet. We want souls to go to Heaven, it is the ultimate goal to be in Heaven. Marriage, and the marital act is for procreation and UNITY between the husband and spouse.

Sex is not a sin within marriage, and any impediment to the natural result of sexual relations (ie, children) is a sin. It prevents conception, and in defeats the purpose of the act.

In the case of the pill, conception occurs but the . is prevented from attaching to the uterus, resulting in death.

What makes you think that we aren’t worried about these things? Just because it isn’t reported in the media? Do you know how many Catholic charities, shelters, schools, hospitals, military chaplains there are? A whole heck of a lot.

The only reason the contraception debate is in the media is because of the Catholic Church’s view on it which goes against the grain of secular society. And sex isn’t a sin. It is actually something that is considered sacred and has a specific purpose which secular society taints by it’s misuse. It is the misuse of this gift that is the sin.
My ex-boyfriend, who was Catholic, agreed with me on this. He kept pushing me to take Contraception and completely ignored the official Catholic stance on the issue.
Your ex-boyfriend is poorly catechized and is probably only Catholic by name (we call them cafeteria Catholics). Just because people think it’s okay doesn’t mean it is.

Actually, the pill doesn’t protect against STIs and has shown to be a cause of certain cancers, and as a previous poster wrote, is also classified as a Class 1 carcinogen. It can also severely mess with a woman’s hormones causing a variety of hormonal disorders. And condoms have been known to fail many times.
Or are you going to live out your life only having sex to have children or follow NFP (which often causes unplanned pregnancy and incredible financial strain).
Even when not using NFP, you aren’t “guaranteed” to get pregnant every time. It took my brother and his wife an entire year before they got pregnant. And they were actually trying.

Since you don’t completely know the Catholic Church’s stance on sex, you won’t understand the stance on contraception.

And the biggest issue in the debate isn’t necessarily that it is contraception, but it is that the government is trying to force us to pay for something of which we find immoral.

The contraceptive pill prevents release of an egg from the ovaries. Without an egg present, fertilization/conception cannot occur.

You’ve been bombarded with misinformation, it would be difficult or near impossible to explain the truth to you on this thread, particularly with your current mindset. If you think you can have the patience to watch this video through, it explains the whole Catholic teaching and rationality:

shop.mycatholicfaith.org/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=8_17&products_id=41

The video is also temporarily posted on Catholic-Voter.com, but they say that the link will be removed soon. It’s a large file and may take an hour to download, it’s an Mp4, but for some reason it swaps to an mp3. You might have to rename the extension. I did get it to play.

Read the box, it does more than that, it works in 3 ways, it also acts as an abortifacient. It prevents a fertilized egg from taking foothold.

Apparently he was also ignoring the fact that sex outside of marriage is also forbidden.

If people kept sex where it belongs - in the bedrooms of people who are married to each other - there would be no need for contraception, since every child conceived would have two parents who love each other - even if they were conceived unexpectedly.
What real harm does contraception do to anyone?
Uh - it causes them not to be born … ? 🤷

Actually, that’s what’s been working for me, so far. 😃

God gave us the gift of partipating in the creation of new members of the highest form of His creation. When we take that marvelous gift and use it for mere fun and physical pleasure, it is much, much worse than thins like the Taliban shooting up ancient statues and the like, which I hear people complain about.
My ex-boyfriend, who was Catholic, agreed with me on this. He kept pushing me to take Contraception and completely ignored the official Catholic stance on the issue.
I have a lot of trouble with this statement. It seems that first, he wanted to commit a mortal sin–sex outside of marriage. In order not to have the natural consrquences of that act have any effect on his life, he thought birth control should be used.

Now, it sounds to me, when you say he was pushing you to use abc, that you did not feel ready to have sex with him at that point. It used to be that women were protected from “being pushed” to have sex because there was not a really consistent way to eliminate the posssibility of the natural result of having sex occur. Now that we have reliable methods of preventing a new human being from being created, women “are pushed” to use abc so men can have sex with them, which is really saying that men now push women to have sex with them.
Don’t you guys think worrying over contraception, which does nothing aside from lowering the probability of STIs and Pregnancy, is ridiculous? What real harm does contraception do to anyone? It’s utterly stupid.
ABC does not actually reduce the incidence of STDs–the rate of cases and numbers of kinds of STDs has exploded since abc was fully legalized in the US.

Moreover, abc doesn’t seem to protect all that well from pregnancy. It just recently came out that 40% of births in the US were to women who are not married. And over 90% of women who have abortions have used abc, and 54% reported using a form of birth control within the month previous to their becoming pregnant.
Or are you going to live out your life only having sex to have children or follow NFP (which often causes unplanned pregnancy and incredible financial strain).
What causes pregnancy is having sex. That is it. Abstaining from sex totally prevents pregnancy. NFP does not cause pregnancy. NFP is very inexpensive as well, much cheaper than, say, vasectomy.

Children are a blessing from God. Consider how much better of the world would be if we had a lot more people to help care for thise in need. As it is, there are too few people to care for those in need. So the Catholic “obsession” with contraception may actually have some relationship with those other problems you mentioned, no?

Make sure to read for yourself what the Church really teaches instead of making false assumptions if you want to start a meaningful conversation.

What makes you think that Catholics are not concerned about starvation, poverty, homelessness, war and disease? I support a lot of charitable organizations, via financial means and volunteer in a lot of causes. I also have relatives and friends that volunteer their skills in helping out the needy all over the world.

Again, too many baseless assumptions.

Mary: Why do you care what Catholics think? Are you thinking of becoming Catholic? If so I can share more but you have an X BOYFRIEND who kept pushing you to take contraception which you seem to agree with if I understand you correctly. If not let me know.

Why do you care how we live out our lives? How strange to me although thank you for your concern. I

  1. Before 1930, EVERY SINGLE CHRISTIAN DENOMINATION TAUGHT THAT CONTRACEPTION WAS EVIL!!! EVERY SINGLE ONE. Then you had the Anglican Church’s synod in 1930 which reversed that Church’s teaching. Then the majority of protestant Churches followed suit.
  2. The Papal Encyclical delivered by His Holiness, Pope Saint Pius X: Pascendi Domini Gregis expressly condemns modernism, of which contraception is a symptom of the disease of modernism. It condemns the same modernism that reversed 1900 years of tradition in the majority of Protestant churches.
Here is the entire text of the Encyclical: vatican.va/holy_father/pius_x/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-x_enc_19070908_pascendi-dominici-gregis_en.html
  1. The Papal Encyclical delivered by His Holiness, Pope Paul VI: Humanae Vitae expressly condemns contraception. Moreover, there are four prophecies that His Holiness, Pope Paul VI, says will happen if contraception is widely used, and not rejected by both his flock, and the majority of society:
  2. An increase of infidelity (divorce, adultery), and a decline of morality
  3. A loss of respect for women
  4. Abuse of power (IE: governmental power to control populations). Or, as the sound byte exists in our culture: the government invading our bedrooms… for the purpose of population control.
  5. Unlimited dominion: the belief that man has complete authority over his own body. (Obviously this is not true, we are called to give our lives unto our Lord Jesus Christ).
This is an article suggesting that the 4 papal prophecies of **His Holiness, Pope Paul VI **have indeed come true: nd.edu/~afreddos/courses/264/popepaul.htm

If I could condemn what the OP’s post says in one trite statement it would be this:

We conform our entire lives to Jesus Christ, not just the bits and pieces that we are comfortable with. We conform our lives to Jesus Christ until we have no opinions which are contrary to the teachings of Jesus Christ (IE: Heresy)

i agree. especially considering the fact that the church doesnt really have a tradition of opposing contraception. the early church fathers MISUNDERSTOOD the human body back then. they thought that spiling the male seed was tantamount to abortion, but now we know better. therefore their opposition to contraception was on a totally flawed premise.

why cant a couple have contraceptive sex during the woman’s infertile periods?
