Whilst, I have no doubt three people were killed in Israel prior to their attack on Hamas, it seems a little strange there was limited, if any, media reports of it prior to the attack on Hamas.

The following is also going on at the same time, i.e. Palestine is attempting to get UN recognition as an independant Palestinian state. IMO, I think, it is very difficult to get the true story of any war, as the ‘old’ saying goes, the victor always writes history. Not that I’m inferring either side is innocent and/ or the victor, in this long drawn out situation but bias does occur in these situations, depending on the relationships/goals of other countries with either of the sparring parties.

**Call to topple Abbas over UN effort

By Tobias Buck in Jerusalem

Israel’s foreign minister has called for Mahmoud Abbas to be “toppled” from office if the Palestinian Authority president goes ahead with efforts to win UN recognition for an independent Palestinian state this month.

The warning from Avigdor Lieberman, who heads the far-right Yisrael Beiteinu party, was made in a position paper handed out to the Israeli media on Wednesday. The paper called for a tough Israeli response to the Palestinian diplomatic campaign at the UN, which is due to culminate in a vote on November 29 to raise the formal status of the Palestinian delegation in New York to that of a non-member “observer state”.**

Some background information

The conflict may also underscore Israeli unhappiness with the UN considering a bid by the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority, which rules the West Bank, to upgrade the Palestinians’ status at the U.N. General Assembly to a non-member state. Israel has reportedly told its ambassadors to warn nations that it may cancel the 1993 Oslo peace accords. Those accords have been the foundation of Israel-Palestinian relations for the past 20 years.
Yes, I agree, particularly the last paragraph, which could be a major contributor to the recent escalation of violence.

Hamas is bold, but awfully naive in attacking Israel. What is Hamas hoping to prove? Is it any wonder that Israel is dominating them in this war thing?

Actually, it is easy to explain. According to the Reuters article cited, the attack which killed 3 Israelis on Thursday was in retaliation for the attack on Hamas which began on Wednesday. It would have been hard to report on the 3 Israeli deaths when they hadn’t yet happened. :o

Yes, I just read it on the telegraph, I did not interpret the OP correctly. I thought it inferred that was why Israel had retaliated i.e. by killing the Hamas leader. Confused and then some.

Of course, its all speculation, but news reports indicate that Hamas has been trying to maintain its dominance over more radical factions operating in Gaza. Those hard-line factions have been periodically rocketing Israel, and Hamas may have been losing credibility.

Another factor is that, according to Israeli military officials, Hamas has been rearming since 2006 with weapons from Iran and with looted arms from Libya. Hamas may have felt they were strong enough to stand up to Israel.

Actually, I meant to add  not sarcasm! Not too with it this morning!

The UK foreign secretary has stated that Hamas is to blame for the Gaza crisis.

He condemned rocket attacks from Gaza into southern Israel, but urged Israel “to do their utmost to reduce tension”.
“Hamas bears principal responsibility for the current crisis. I utterly condemn rocket attacks from Gaza into southern Israel by Hamas and other armed groups. This creates an intolerable situation for Israeli civilians in southern Israel, who have the right to live without fear of attack from Gaza," Mr Hague said in a statement.*

Hamas officials announced a ban on price increases and tried to reassure residents that there were ample supplies of food and gas.
But the Health Ministry said there were shortages of medicine and medical supplies, and it reported that hospitals had used the equivalent of a month’s worth of emergency supplies since the Israeli assault began Wednesday.

Hamas claims to have struck Tel Aviv with a missile, but an Israeli police spokesman denied it.

To draw Iran into a war with Israel under “just cause”. Perhaps Iran is further along with its nuclear program than most think.

This was reported 7 minutes ago.

*The IDF says no rockets struck the city of Tel Aviv. An Agence France-Presse correspondent reports that a rocket fall into the water near Jaffa.

Haaretz reports that warning sirens are also sounding in Be’er Sheva, to the east of Gaza.

A few minutes ago, sirens in Tel Aviv sent residents running for shelter. We can confirm that no rockets struck in the area.

The missile supposedly was a Fajr-5. Iran makes them, although there have been reports that Gazans have modified the design to extend the range. I wonder if those changes affect accuracy?

The organization claiming to have launched the missile is not Hamas, but the armed wing of Islamic Jihad.

Hmm… in terms of Iranians support, Hamas has long been second-fiddle to Hezbollah.

And Hamas has publicly backed the Syrian rebels. Syria’s government is an important ally of Iran, so Hamas and Iran may not be on the best of terms right now.

Three missiles seem to have been aimed at Tel Aviv. One impacted on the ground in an open area of Rishon Lezion, a city on Tel Aviv’s southern outskirts. The other two missiles are unaccounted for. However, there are no reports of injuries from any of them.
Israeli officials say they have not yet decided on whether to launch a ground invasion in Gaza, and it’s not clear what would trigger it. But a strike on Tel Aviv itself, Israel’s commercial and cultural capital, would mark a significant escalation.
While southern Israeli areas near Gaza have long coped with rocket fire, the attacks on the Tel Aviv area illustrated the significant capabilities that Hamas militants have developed. Gaza militants had previously hit Rishon Lezion before but never reached Tel Aviv, roughly 70 kilometers, or 50 miles, north of the strip.
