“We owe to the people of both Israel and Gaza our renewed effort to consolidate this pause in fighting into a more sustainable ceasefire,” U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in statement, reiterating his call for seven-day humanitarian cease-fire.

A Hamas spokesman said the organization was amenable to an extension.

Still, moments after the cease-fire ended, three mortars were fired from Gaza and hit Israel in the Eshkol regional council. No casualties or damage were reported.

Yes, this is the problem. Hamas won’t play by the rules of non-aggression; they won’t live in peace with Israel.

Perhaps it was to do with the fact that the murder count of their fellow innocent citizens has reached almost a thousand.
Your outlook is appalling, shame on you.
In the article you posted by The Telegraph, about Christian schools and churches opening up their doors to Palestinian Muslims, is gratifying in that we know Hamas won’t store up rockets on the premises. From the same article:
Elsewhere, rockets have been discovered in two schools run by the United Nations, raising more questions about their safety as places of refuge. The latest stockpile of weapons was found in a vacant school near two others that are both filled with displaced people.
The UN “strongly and unequivocally” condemned the use of the school by an armed Palestinian faction to hide weapons, describing this as a breach of the “inviolability of its premises under international law”.

Yes, the Christian churches are unlikely to allow such a thing. However, Hamas can endanger the churches by launching rockets nearby, leading to retaliatory strikes from Israel. Such an occurrence may have been the reason for bombing near the Greek Orthodox church in Gaza. The bombing damaged graves and sprayed shrapnel on the church.

Israel says ready to extend short Gaza truce; many bodies pulled from rubble

reuters.com/article/2014/07/26/us-mideast-gaza-idUSKBN0FV04A20140726

Israel offered to add 4 hours to the 12 hour ceasefire which had just drawn to a close. Hamas hasn’t responded, but we are nearly three hours into the added period.

The added four hours would last from 8 pm to midnight, Gaza time. Since it would be dark, which would impede movement, could it be that Israel is trying to allow for a peaceful Iftar?

Hamas fires rockets into Israel after Gaza truce bid

Hamas militants say they have fired several rockets into Israel, rejecting an offer to extend a 12-hour ceasefire in its Gaza operation until 21:00 GMT.

Hamas said it wanted a complete stop to fighting - accusing Israel of using the truce to prepare more attacks.

The Israeli cabinet is considering a UN request for a 24-hour pause.

😦

So much for that idea.

The map which accompanies that news article illustrates the three kilometer buffer zone within Gaza. Residents of Gaza have been instructed by Israel to flee that three km zone. The buffer zone constitutes 44% of the land area of Gaza.
Everything in that area of the world is a condensed area.

New Jersey is the 5th-smallest US state, covering about 7800 square miles or 20,000 square kilometers.

As the comparison map above shows, the land currently controlled by the State of Israel (including disputed territories) is not much larger. Israel in its pre-1967 borders was 8,019 square miles or 20,770 square kilometers, just barely bigger than New Jersey.

Israel is about the size of Vancouver Island

Yes, and the territory of Gaza covers 141 sq. miles. This is slightly bigger than the city of Philadelphia (134 sq. miles). Gaza has a population about 20% larger than Philadelphia.

Now, imagine pushing the residents of nearly half of Philadelphia into the other half of the city. Don’t allow anyone to leave. Add an intensive bombing and shelling campaign, in addition to a prolonged economic blockade.

Israel doesn’t control all the boarders to Gaza. Egypt has a lot of room. They could let them immigrate there, but that won’t.

Maybe it’s just me, but if I was living in a confined space like Philadelphia, I wouldn’t be lobbing rockets at my neighbors. 🤷

They are trying anyway, Israel found tunnels heading again into Egypt. Under the current President, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Egypt has bulldozed those tunnels,

Another 24 hrs approved contingent on Israel being able to work on the tunnels. Hamas hasn’t responded yet.

OTOH, if I were your neighbor, I wouldn’t keep you penned up in your own little area with no way to get out. 🤷

If “if” was a fifth we could have a toast. 🤷 Meanwhile Israel is under radical Islamic order of extermination. 😉 Trapped off and persecuted as usual. :gopray:

And surrounded by enemies. And not supported by its “allies.” Not a lot of freedom to move there.

Good point. OTOH if I told you my one purpose in life is to burn down your house and kick you out of the country you live in, and I keep breaking into your house and killing your kids, you probably would, at the very least, build a fence.

This is the heartbreak of this whole affair.

Israel approves extending humanitarian cease-fire in Gaza by 24 hours; Hamas considering it. cnn.it/1oq4LQF

Israel has accepted a UN request for a 24-hour ceasefire in Gaza, but warns the army will act if it is breached by Palestinian militants.

A crisis cabinet meeting extended Saturday’s truce until midnight on Sunday (21:00 GMT).

This comes despite Hamas militants firing rockets, rejecting Israel’s earlier move to prolong the initial 12-hour ceasefire by four hours.

Hamas said it wanted a complete stop to fighting and an end to Gaza’s blockade.

“Any humanitarian calm that does not include the withdrawal of occupation soldiers from the Gaza Strip and enable the people to return to their houses and to evacuate the wounded is not acceptable,” Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters.
