How did she find out what your angel’s name was?
I have no idea. My friend just told me that this woman in Missouri writes letters to people and it is revealed the name of their guardian angel.

I knew it was a scam…even though my friend really believed this woman could do this…not sure if she and others are still making pilgrimages to Conyers…but it was a big deal back in the late 80’s early 90’s.🤷

To the naysayers, welcome to the dark side of the Truth

Acts 19:15
But the wicked spirit, answering, said to them: Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you ?

THoise who seek the name of their guardian angel suffer from prelest; SPiritual delusion. Our angels name is not pertinent to salvation,and seeking it out is definitely NOT the spirituality promoted by the Fathers of the church who told us to flee from visions and such.

COuld a guardian angel reveal, without it being sought, their own name to a saint? Yes, if it were conducive to a persons salvation. But to seek it out shows a curiosity that borders on the occult, and the pseudo-divinatory means of finding it (like randomly flipping open a bible and placing your finger on the first word you to like my cousins did who apparently each have five guardian angels) is not the Holy SPirits leading.

I cannot judge that a person does these things in bad faith. But I can judge that those who do these things will not grow spiritually, or if they show signs of any kind of “Growth” it will only be growing into a warped and deluded pseudo-spirituality that will lewad them away from Christ ultimately. THis is the way the enemy works.

If I can think of it you know he has, and he has all the loopholes covered:

Be aware: Flee visions as the beginning of evil. Silence the mouths of spirits that offer their names to you: It creates a form of spiritual bondage; if you accept their name as THEIR own, then you have in effect accepted them and allowed them into your life, and they will wreak havoc.

I know I sound fanatical, but please, just consider it: If any angel offers their name ask yourself two questions:
  1. Am I worthy to have an angel visit me? (No.)
  2. Does knowing this contribute to my salvation or endanger it?
"Saint Anthony had a vision where the whole world was full of snares and traps. He cried to the Lord, ‘Oh good Lord, who may escape from these snares?’ A voice said back to him, ‘humility’! "

I think it’s been said already, but the main problem with trying to name your guardian angel is that such an act implies that you have power over the angel, which you don’t; the angel is made for God, not for you; and God has assigned the angel to you, but you don’t own the angel (God owns both of you!)

Look at how names are doled out in the first five chapters of Genesis. Adam is allowed to name animals (Genesis 2:19), but notice that Adam does not name himself (although he does name Eve). Adam’s name first appears in Genesis 1.26, where God says “Let us make mankind…” The word mankind is literally the word Adam; Adam’s name is simply “Man.” Bottom line: God has the right to name His creatures (and that would include the angels); we don’t have that right unless it is given to us, as it was over things of the earth.

:tiphat:

When you “name” an angel, you give it a preconceived identity. Demons KNOW what that identity is and mirror it to get you to turn away from God. Don’t be deceived.
Speaking philosophically just saying “my guardian angel” gives the angel a “preconceived identity”, that of Br David’s Guardian Angel. Saying “my guardian angel” is not much different than actually putting a name to it.

The difference is in referring to your angel as “my guardian angel” you refer to the angel in its functionality as given by God. In reffering to an angel by name, you refer to it personally, and that could be any angelic person masquerading as another angelic person.

Greater danger.

I’ve seen this very topic discussed here before. I don’t understand why we shouldn’t but apparently, some posters more educated than myself, seem to know that we shouldn’t. I will tell a story: I was driving once by night on a highway I knew and decided to speak to my Guardian Angel as I drove. I decided to name Him or Her “Fidelius”, which I thought was nice, since I’m guessing it’s Latin for Fidelity. I surely meant no harm but as I drove, I found myself lost, off the highway and in an area that was desolate. Fortunately, a passing truckdriver got me back in the right direction. I didn’t see anything wrong at the time - but seeing this topic discussed occasionally makes me wonder. I meant no harm - and surely, God knows that. But one has to wonder how I was talking to my Guardian Angel - and got lost.

Angel of God, my Guardian dear
To Whom God’s Love Entrusts me here;
Ever this day be at my side
To light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

Well, the Church says its practice is to be discouraged, so…it’s either what you want or the church.

I was hoping to find a little more focus in the bulk of the thread on our Guardian Angel’s disposition towards us, and on the holy Angels’ disposition towards us in general.

Venerable John Henry Cardinal Newman, in his poem to his Guardian Angel calls him “** O brother of my soul**.” Sared scripture would say Cardinal Newman is right on the mark:

[bolds mine]

Revelation 12:10

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: "Now have salvation and power come, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Anointed. For the accuser of **our brothers **is cast out, who accuses them before our God day and night.

Revelation 19:10

I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, "Don’t! I am a fellow servant of yours and of your brothers who bear witness to Jesus. Worship God.

So while the holy Angels are clearly superior to us in power and intellect , their disposition towards us is one of great benevolence and profound solicitude … They really love us a lot !!

…Sounds like it would be in our interests to get to know them a little more, to have an ongoing relationship with them. One would be pleasantly surprised to discover how much the holy Angels can help us pray during Mass if we would only ask them to. Our newest saint - native to this province - Saint André Bessette, commonly known as Brother André previously, would recommend to some of the pilgrims to St. Joseph’s Oratory, a short prayer just before Mass:

“O holy Angels, obtain for us that we may be filled with Christ’s Presence on the altar as you are penetrated by it in Heaven.”

YEah, and that’s cool! THat’s good! Just don’t claim exclusive knowledge of your angel in some special way (THat’s the work of the devil) and don’t seek after visions of him (That’s the road to delusion). ANd don’t name them! You open yourself to demonic attack.

Like I said, if I can think of it, THEY have thought of it.

We have to consider the other side of the coin too. I agree we shouldn’t seek to know a holy Angel’s proper name. Apart from being curious, there is a potential there for arrogance - to presume we would know the name God gave our own guardian Angel.

From what we can observe about the Angels’ names which are given in sacred scripture , the Angels’ names revealed to us denote their function:

Michael - Who is like unto God ?

Gabriel - Power or Strength of God .

Raphael - Remedy/Medicine of God, or, God heals.

… all these names find their true meaning/identity in God - not in humans .

Even Jacob who wrestled with the Angel wasn’t given the Angel’s name :

Genesis 32:29-30

… “You shall no longer be spoken of as Jacob, but as Israel, because you have contended with divine and human beings and have prevailed.”

Jacob then asked him, “Do tell me your name, please.” He answered, “Why should you want to know my name?” With that, he bade him farewell. .

But our guardian Angels are assigned to each of us personally and this can bring us to intimacy with our guardian Angel.Our Blessed Lord refers to them as “our” Angels:

Matt 18:10

[NAB]…I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.
[DRV]… for I say to you, that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.

St. Padre Pio had a vibrant relationship with his guardian Angel. He even encouraged others to send their guardian Angels to him.

St. Peregrine is said to have had his Angel as his companion. This is reflected in the St. Peregrine Prayer - “O God, You gave St. Peregrine an angel for his companion, the Mother of God for his teacher, and Jesus for the Physician of his infirmity…”

The pic here represents the concept of our guardian Angel as our companion and as something worth considering.

The whole point which shouldn’t be smothered here is Intimacy With One’s Guardian Angel. Anyone who discourages another’s intimacy with their guardian Angel is doing the Angel and God a disservice.

So while we shouldn’t seek to know our guardian Angel’s proper name, there is no narrow-minded interpretation alluding to the delusion that we may only refer to them exclusively as, “my guardian Angel” . If I wish to have a relationship with my guardian Angel and acknowledge interiorly that I don’t need to know his proper name during my earthly pilgrimage, yet in conversation/invocation I wish to refer to him as, say, “brother of my soul” or “dear companion” , that is toally cool and is no one else’s business.

A good building block to start with when wanting to have a more intimate relationship with our guardian Angel, is to, when we contemplate him, remember that God is there with him too - they never become disconnected.

Venerable John Henry Cardinal Newman’s Poem to His Guardian Angel

My oldest friend, mine from the hour
When first I drew my breath;
My faithful friend, that shall be mine,
Unfailing till my death.

Thou hast been ever at my side;
My Maker to thy trust
Consigned my soul, what time he framed
The infant child of dust.

Thou wast my sponsor at the font;
And thou, each budding year,
Didst whisper elements of truth
Into my childish ear.

And thou wilt linger round my bed,
When life is ebbing low,
Of doubt, impatience and of gloom,
The jealous sleepless foe.

Mine when I stand before the Judge;
And mine, if spared to stay
Within the golden furnace till
My sin is burned away.

And mine, O brother of my soul,
When my release shall come;
Thy gentle arms shall lift me then,
Thy wings shall waft me home.
